- Mcapo196400Contoy Carlos rocks!Carlos is THE best! 2 years in a row. I've added approx. 75 species to my life list. He was patient and an expert birder. I'll be back.
- haruhikoi202300Wonderful experienceCarlos was very knowledgeable about birds and was extremely good at spotting them. He was also a very nice guy. I had a wonderful experience.
- Excursion6153886873400Great birdwatching experience at Ruta de las Cenotes!Amazing experience birdwatching at the Ruta de las Cenotes. Carlos is extremely knowledgeable and fantastic at identifying birds by sound. He knows a lot about the behavior and locations of many target birds, so we visited multiple places to be able to see a large variety of beautiful birds. In about 5 hours we saw 50+ species and photographed most of them. Would definitely recommend for anyone in the Cancun/Puerto Morelos/Playa del Carmen area!
- Nin6800Quite boring without the sharkWe were really excited about this tour, but since the shark was not to be found, we ended up with spending the entire day at open sea, looking for it. When it comes to nature, you can never be sure what to get, but locals told us that there are not many whalesharks there in July. We returned disappointed and hungry after have spent an entyre day of vacation and a good amount of money. This is not ment to ba a critisism of the crew, they did as good as they could.
- Michele K00Swimming with whale sharks is incredible! This was a great tour for our family. We are staying ion Cozumel and this seemed to be the only tour that accommodated picking us up from the ferry and getting us to Playa Sam to meet our captain and guide. The ride out to find the whale sharks is long and can get bumpy but I can’t express how much it is worth the ride. “Chicken” was our water guide and we jumped in pairs as our captain did a fantastic job of navigating the boats so that as we jumped in we were close to the sharks and could then swim for a bit to keep up with them and observe them. The whole team was very conscientious of the whale sharks and keeping them and us safe. I am working through a fear of the ocean and “Chicken” was amazing and on our second dive gave me great tips and even held me hand to calm me as we observed this enormous fish. The stop at the island sand bar was nice and a good way to break up the boat ride back. Guacamole and fresh ceviche were delicious. We highly recommend doing this tour!
- F7927GImaryl00A very successful morning of birding with Carlos. Thanks! I don't have any photos in hereWe had an excellent morning and saw lots of birds. Carlos is very good at finding birds and enticing them with his bird calls. Also he was good at helping me find them deep in the bush. I had a wonderful time.
- P6800ETkarenl00Thank you Robert, Manuel and Lobo for an amazing day!Thank you Robert, Manuel and Lobo for an amazing day! We did a private whale shark tour for a multi generational party of 10. It was amazing from start to finish. We booked our tour with Robert who was so kind, patient, and knowledgeable - we had kids and adults in their 70s. On our tour day, Jerry provided excellent car service. The boat was immaculate and Manuel was extremely informative and hospitable. Lobo was THE CAPTAIN OF CAPTAINS! It is SO challenging managing a boat, your guests and other (crazy) guests in the water while also maintaining a respect of the incredible whale sharks. Lobo was amazing. We were well cared for and loved working with a local company (Manuel and Lobo are both Isla Mujeres residents). Their love and respect for the ecosystem is wonderful and we loved to see that in a tour company. Thank you all for a fantastic, unforgettable day!! Karen
- Vacation3988911366800A once-in-a-lifetime experienceI am an avid birder and when I came on vacation in Cancun I knew I just had to go birding. Our guide was Carlos and we had a BLAST. We were here in the peak of the mating season, and we saw 66 species in the span of 4 hours. Carlos knew all the places to take us and helped us see tons of species. He was a pleasure to be around, and is very helpful whether you are a beginner or advanced birder. I can't recommend this tour more highly! Plus, Carlos shared important stories about the local communities and the conservation of nature here. We ate delicious fresh-made quesadillas during a break. I'm very grateful for this tour!
- JanineD72100Birds galoreCarlos was a great guide and very patient with beginners. We saw around 50 different birds and he even got some great pictures of a few of them. It was interesting to see the migrants that I might see again at my home in the US as well as some of the endemic species.
- lauramH5720OO00Great experienceCarlos spotted many species quickly and provided a list and pictures of all we saw. Delicious quesadilla brunch and very friendly and accommodating. Some species had migrated north but still saw around 50 birds. Definitely recommend. No difficult hiking which I appreciated.
- I7083OUbriann00To see so much Wildlife within the estate of 5 star hotels is amazing. There are organised guided trips into the rural aspect, highlighting nature which is plentiful and varied
- yyp201800Happy birding in Cancun! We are birders with about 450 species on our belt. This was the best birding we ever had so far in a short few hours. Carlos was an excellent guide. With his knowledge of where and when for what, we saw 76 species with 40 lifers! In the first hour or so, we pocketed the 2 toucan species (keel billed toucan and collared aracari), garter trogon, ferruginous pigmy owl all with clear pic's just to name a few. At the end, we also saw the black headed trogon, 2 motmot species, got clear photos of the lesser greenlit which is very hard to get according to Carlos. All in all, very happy with the tour. Highly recommended.
- christopherwU6107XP00Great Birding after 40 years in CancunMy wife and I have been coming to Cancun for 40 years. We have taking trips to Contoy and Rio Largatos, but had never found something near Cancun. This was perfect! Carlos was an amazing guide. He knew where to go for certain species or just where there were lots of birds. He spotted them easily, pointed them out, took pictures for us and kept a list of the 46 birds we saw. Many lifers and some amazing birds. If you like bird watching, I can’t recommend this highly enough!
- jovanac50600Beyond every expectationThe tour was above my expectations, definitely the highlight of my trip to Mexico! Carlos and Lugo are very experienced birders, have lot of knowledge and give 200% to make your experience great! We also went for the most delicious cesedillas to a small family business. Thank you Carlos and Lugo once again!
- PINwheelGrl00Carlos guides a memorable birding excursion! We took the 6 hour birding tour in Riviera Maya and had the best time! We saw 51 species thanks to the knowledge and talents of our amazing guide, Carlos. (I have yet to do the math, but I think about 40 of those were lifers for me!) I was most excited about the Ferruginous Pygmy Owl that followed us around all morning! But my Toucan pictures turned out the best! If you are looking for a great birding excursion in the Riviera Maya area, I recommend this one! Carlos even got my husband excited about all of the birds we were seeing despite him not being an avid birder! Thank you, Carlos, for a fantastic excursion!

We crossed with the 7am ferry from Cozumel to meet our guide Carlos Tec. (Ferry tip - buy one way tickets. Ultramar and Winjet are running staggered ferry schedules, so a round trip locks you in with a specific company and may cause you to wait an extra hour. One way is a little more expensive, but gives you optionality.)
It’s a long drive from Playa del Carmen to Chichen Itza, but Carlos kept us entertained with history and cultural insights. The bonus is he is an avid bird watcher, so we got out along the highway to see some toucans he spotted flying across the road. (He’s also an experienced rescue diver so we got some good diving recommendations.)
At Chichen Itza we had a local tour guide, Manuel, while Carlos waited with the car. Manuel grew up in the area, was passionate about Chichen Itza, and took about 100 pictures of our family throughout the site. We went through the tour pretty quickly (about 2 hours), which was good for our family. The crowds were pretty reasonable because we were able to get there before the other tour buses.
We grabbed lunch at a roadside stand for some fantastic Mayan food (panuchos and salbutes are a must). And we headed to Valladolid for some history and a dip in a cenote. Carlos grew up in the area, so when the first cenote was closed it was easy to find an alternative. He also provided a personal touch to the history.
We finished the tour in time to catch the 7pm ferry back to Cozumel.
A few of the intangibles for using Contoy Excursions:
- Personalized. Schedule and itinerary was pretty flexible. Carlos and Manuel took a lot of pictures and provided them for us to download the next day (no hidden fees).
- Responsive. Quick answers to questions. Provided extra facts to make it easier to connect from Cozumel (email and WhatsApp).
- Passionate. Carlos wasn’t going through the motions - he cares about the area and he enjoys what he does. Sounds like the whole team is the same way.
- Helpful. Some of our crew had sinus headaches, so we made a run to a local Oxxo for some Sudafed equivalent. We changed our tour date from Boxing Day to Christmas (to schedule a night dive Carlos recommended) - we were on another tour with Carlos/Contoy and it went from “let’s check” to “it’s done” over the course of the afternoon.
This tour was a family favorite on our Cozumel vacation. I recommend the tour and Contoy Excursions.
