About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:

- Destinyhoodie0 contributionsIt was fun, but long, dayIt was such a fun day. We were the first ones picked up and the trip started around 3:30 am and we didn't get back until about 11pm (it was a long day). Luckily, the van was fairly comfortable and we ended up sleeping a lot during the drive. The road through the mountains is very windy so make sure you take some dramamine if you have motion sickness issues. David the driver was really great. he didn't speak english, but we really didn't expect him to. He still tried to help us out the best he could. all three locations were really great. We didn't end up swimming at Misol Ha because we were only there for about 45 minutes, so it would've been nice to spend a little more time there. Palenque was the final stop and we spent about 2 hours there. Plenty if you don't do a guided tour (optional) but we did an english guided tour and we felt a bit rushed towards the end. On a side note, the English-speaking guide, Carlos, was really great and knowledgeable. Showed us the ruins buried in the jungle and we even saw Howler monkeys! If you do this, make sure you take some snacks. Apart from a stop at a cafe for breakfast, we really didn't make another meal stop. But, tbf, the bus voted on whether or not we would stop to eat. I'm glad we didn't stop before palenque since we were already a little rushed as is. the bus voted to stop at a gas station with a few food vendors out front for our final stop and then the last leg of our trip was a non-stop 5.5 hour drive back to San Cristobal. Just a heads up, there is a hotel in Palenque and you can choose to stay there and find another way back if you don't want to have such a long day. there was one couple on our bus that did that, and honestly, I kinda wished we did too. Overall, for the price especially, we would recommend. Everyone was really nice and helpful.Written August 8, 2024
- Cecile G0 contributionsGreat sites but dodgy van trip home. The start of the trip was great. We had a punctual and pleasant driver. We felt safe with him. It was a huge day, which we knew in advance. The sites were amazing. We had just the right amount of time for each site What ruined it for us was the trip home. We thought we would just sleep, but a little way into the trip home, we picked up a number of people that were definitely NOT part of the tour! So we were packed in like sardines! I’ve had more leg room and private space in an economy budget airline! Impossible to sleep. And everyone was hot and sweaty. It was cooler outside than inside the vanWritten May 28, 2024
- serenawestra0 contributionsDon’t go if you don’t speak SpanishWe didn’t know the guide only spoke Spanish, so we missed out on the majority of the info. The minibus was small and had no airconditioning. It was a very long drive, so that was not a pleasant experience. The canyon and viewpoints are beautiful, but you might as well book the boat tour by yourself. During the boat trip we stopped several times to look at monkeys, crocodiles, and nature. The canyon is stunning. The boat dropped us off in Chiapa da Corzo, which is very touristy and in our case: extremely hot. So we couldn’t wait to leave again. It was hard to find a place to eat that was not selling burgers. Would recommend visiting the canyon, but if you don’t speak Spanish I don’t recommend this tour.Written March 16, 2024
- Quest615299451210 contributionsGreat tour, but be careful of the food on the wayWe did the day tour to Palenque, and it was great! It was a long day but worth it for Palenque itself, and for the waterfall stops on the way. The bus was comfortable and the driver was great. He didn't speak any English so you are reilant on other passengers to tell you things like when you need to be back on the bus. Our only concern is the food en route. There are two stops - one for a buffet breakfast and another for a buffet dinner. There aren't really any other options to buy food, apart from the usual snack and drink vendors. We were quite sick the following day and when we went to a local restaurant to get some plain food the woman who owned the restaurant told us that everyone who had the buffet food on the way to Palenque got sick. She was amazing and gave us special soup and tea. Do the trip, it's amazing but if you can, take your own food.Written January 18, 2024
- lucyedgington0 contributionsbest tour company in SCLCcannot recommend enough. we went on two tours with this company and both were exceptional. on the first tour (06.01) i became sick and needed to leave early. our driver was incredibly understanding and drove us until we located a colectivo back to SCLC and explained the route. the next tour of the canyon (07.01) was breathtaking and our driver (edgar) was equally impressive. we had a great time, the drivers were always on time and ready to help. this tour company was the cheapest we found in SCLC and incredibly reliable. shout out!Written January 11, 2024
- EPPE19400 contributionsGreat tour companyUse Viator They were outstanding in all ways. They were on time. They were very concerned with how we were enjoying or not enjoying what where we were or knowledge of San Francisco was over the top vehicles were top notch can’t say enough about how well they took care of us on the days that they picked us upWritten May 5, 2023
- noelleo4890 contributionsA long but worthwhile trip.I did this very long day trip as a one-way, staying in Palenque instead of going back to San Cristobal. I booked with Jalapeño who are cheaper than some other agents. I had booked a different day tour through my hotel and paid more and it was still Otisa travel (which is Jalapeño’s other name) who operated the tour so I think it is better to go to them directly. Everything ran smoothly and on time. Our driver did a good job of staying ahead of the herd of tour buses so we got shady parking and quieter times for photos. Contrary to what Lonely planet says, you should swim in Agua Azul (not Misol-Ha), which has lots of lovely swimming spots as well and plenty food vendors and shops and we had 2 hours here. Misol Ha was a shorter stop for photos. In Palenque, our bus hired a guide. Palenque is a beautiful site. Although it was a long day it was worth the effort. We did not eat until after Palenque - tell your driver if you want to eat beforehand. I think there was a communication breakdown as we would have preferred to eat before. I am glad I did not have to drive back.Written April 22, 2023
- noelleo4890 contributionsWorthwhile day tripI thought that this was a great day trip. Not too much driving like some of the other tours. Everything was punctual and ran smoothly. I was told when I booked that the lookouts were closed on Tuesday but we did stop at lookouts, which were beautiful. It is very hot on the boat and in Chiapas de Corzo. We saw crocodiles and monkeys. We had time for lunch and shopping before returning to San Cristobal. Be aware that most drivers don’t speak any English so it is useful to have some Spanish or you can ask other people on the bus to confirm times for you.Written April 22, 2023
- 289nancye0 contributionsPalenqueWe enjoyed our tour and campanions . Lots of bumps and turns, but just have to be aware in case you don’t want to deal with it. We were fine. The views are beautiful. We got a guide in palenque for the history and jungle tour. The falls are beautiful. Really enjoyed our tripWritten November 23, 2022
- anikam16120 contributionsWell-run day trip to a beautiful canyonThe Canyon is spectacular and the tour was well-run by Jalapeno tours. The only downside is the place that we stopped for lunch was absolutely terrible with high prices. Jalapeno tours has an office in the center of St.Christobal (open until 9pm) where you can book the tours in person for about half the price.Written November 5, 2022

- 30claren0 contributionsSan Cris to PalenqueThe the pick up from San Cris was on time and the transportation was comfortable. While my Spanish isn’t great and the driver only spoke Spanish he didn’t go to any effort to ensure we understood basic information. Because of this I miss understood essential times and missed out on a few things at one location. I’ve done other Spanish only tours and the drivers / guides ensure everyone understands. While it’s not the company’s fault, the English speaking guides at Palenque aren’t worth it. They’re also more expensive because they cut a deal with the driver / tour company and can’t reduce their price. Make sure you pack snacks. Cascadas de Agua Azul has plenty of places to eat but it was too early in the day and by the time you reach Palenque you’ll be starving. Overall I thought the tour was pretty expensive and if you have time you’re better off booking a tour directly in San Cris.Written August 3, 2022
- RowanH3360 contributionsTour to Sumidero CanyonMy wife and I spent a bit of time trying to decide what tour company to go with for the sumidero canyon tour, which I would consider a ‘must do’ when in San Cristobal. Looking back I didn’t need to worry as all the companies were basically doing exactly the same tour. The vans shadow each other all day - stopping in the same stops and doing the exact same itinerary. We spent 380 mexican peso on the tour with jalapeño tours. Given the overheads of park entry (57 mexican peso) and a boat ride (250 mexican peso) I felt this was outstanding value. I certainly couldn’t have done it cheaper had I tried myself. The tour commenced at 0845 at the zocola. We were put into the Otis vans (About 14 per group) and driven to a couple of miradors. After some time admiring the view we were taken to the boats which did a 2 hour tour through the canyon. This was undoubtingly the highlight of the tour. Following this we spent some time in Chipa De Corzo, departing at 1600 and getting back to San Cristobal shortly after 5pm. The tour itself ran fine. I did at times feel like a bit of a sheep but this is going to happen no matter what company you go with. My biggest complaint would be that despite the majority of the tour being of English speaking background, the entire tour was done in Spanish with no effort to translate.Written July 31, 2022

I would not describe this as a tour, it is more like transportation to get to these places. The driver, who was also the "guide" was quite unfriendly and not at all personable, quite grumpy to be exact. If you are English speaking, most likely you will not understand any of the instructions on the bus/van. I had some knowledge of Spanish which was helpful. There are a lot of tourists in San Cristobal who have limited Spanish skills so it would be recommended that perhaps on one day a week or otherwise, there would be an English tour( transport) option. We visited the tour office on numerous occasions to ask questions and get information on several tours. We did not find the staff to be at all friendly, they dealt with clients in an assembly line fashion. We enjoyed what we saw and we thankful for the opportunity to be in this area.

I did this tour and the sumidero tour. On both occasions they were punctual and stayed very close to the times they promised. I like that they pick you up downtown and you don't have to waist time being picked up. On both tours the drivers gave us info and were very polite and honest about what to expect. As far as English... well on the sumidero tour the girl that interpreted wasn't very fluent and my wife chewed me out because I kept correcting her lol. I speak both languages fluently so it wasn't and issue. Clean vehicles, great staff. It was funny because I booked through viator (TripAdvisor) and picked the wrong date accidentally. The viator staff refused to change date so I contacted jalapeño directly and they went out of their way to accommodate me. Will definitely use them again!

My only regret in all my time in Mexico.
Was told I’d be picked uo at my hostel at 8 AM and dropped off at my hostel at 8 PM. Was told to bring a swimsuit. First half of day was fine, driving then enjoying El Chiflon (although the tour description says that the lakes come first and the waterfall after). The nature itself is incredible but DO NOT take this tour from this company. My advice - if at all possible take a collectivo, go on your own & camp there!! After the waterfall, it was more driving and then our driver says we are going to stop for lunch. He pulled over on the side of the highway where there are a lineup of five eateries that literally have photocopied the exact same menu on their wall. Which means you have the option of one. This photocopied menu had only four options. Meat, meat, meat, or cheese. I bought a beer and since I didn’t have smaller change, handed the lady a 50 pesos bill. She cracked open the beer for me, took my money, walked away, I took a sip and she never came back. 50 pesos for a beer. I was expecting 20 tops! Truly highway robbery. Incidentally, only about half a kilometer further down the highway there are numerous restaurants with vegan, vegetarian, meat, and seafood options available to please everyone’s pallet but this was not offered as an option. WHY? We continued on our way driving until eventually coming to the Montebello Lakes. We were told ahead of time that there would be an option to rent a small wooden boat to take you around the lake. We arrived at the lakes at 4:10 PM. This can be confirmed by the timestamp on the first photograph I took there which was the first thing I did upon arrival. You get out of the bus and are funneled down a staircase which leads to a concrete platform that ends in water with all the wooden boats lined up against it. No beach, no sand, no water access. We were told we had one hour. One hour to choose to pay the additional for the boat or sit on our butts on the concrete platform and do nothing. No swimming allowed. In order to swim, you have to pay the additional for one of the boats who then will take you to a beach where they permit you to swim. It is a monopoly. Everyone was under the impression that after sitting in a hot bus sweating for 8 hours minus the 2 hrs @ the waterfall in order to reach the lakes, of course we would be able to swim in the “crystal waters”! This is not the case. 7 persons in our group, after being really upset by this, eventually decided to give in and just rent the boat. That meant they were a couple minutes late returning. But only a couple. Meanwhile, Antonio the driver loads the rest of us into the van and drives away. Since I was the only one on the tour who didn’t speak a word of Spanish, I was not in a position to stop him. He drove up the highway a ways and told people they could get out and take a photo before coming back approximately 20 minutes later. The group of 7 were ranging between furious and about to bawl. They were absolutely freaking out because they thought that they had been altogether abandoned near the Guatemala border. Antonio laughed. We then left around 5:30 to drive back to San Cris where we arrived at 8:40 PM. Antonio at that time then Merli parked the van somewhere in the city and told us to get out. When I protested that I had paid to be dropped off at my hostile he extremely sarcastically said, “Finished!” & told me to get out of the van. Interesting that he knew this word since the entire day I hadn’t a clue what was going on as he made no effort to tell me even through sign language where we were, where to go, how long we would be there or anything. I had to ask for interpretation from fellow guests. At this point, having taken multitude of photos throughout the day, the battery on my phone was at 4%. I rely on my phone for directions. If my phone had of been dead I would’ve had no way to message anyone or find my way back to my hostile that night. Thankfully, it held out to 2% battery power by the time I found walked back to my hostel.
I followed up this tour with a visit to their office and spoke with who I presume to be the manager. He listened to me and then he called Antonio. He came back and told me that “Antonio said” we were at the lakes for four hours, that drop off to the hostel was not included, and that no one ever told me I could swim at the lakes. Clearly Antonio knows he can lie and say whatever he wants about what happens on the trips and that his boss will believe him over any customer. Even when faced with proof of my photographs timestamp. The manager couldn’t care less that his driver was rude to me, he couldn’t care less about the suggestion of having more options to eat that would please more people would make his business better, he couldn’t care less that his trip description is misleading and has no intention of changing it, and he couldn’t care less that Antonio left seven people behind to think that they were stranded.
Lagunas de Montebello is absolutely stunning. El Chiflon waterfall is the prettiest I’ve seen in my life. That’s Gods work. This review is for the company and the men. They deserve zero stars.
Please don’t support such bad business.
