About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Trek253468583200 contributionsRacist ChefMy friend and I are Latinos and we were treated harshly by the chef who showed impatience and racism toward us. He was nice and patient to our white classmates. One of our white classmates also noticed this extreme differential treatment; she actually called the chef a racist.Written May 24, 2024

- Sunshine_Karl0 contributionsRecommendedRecommended. Very nice market tour, cooking and eating lunch with new friends. Our group was about 12. Oscar was quick and efficient with his explanations and instructions - he does this every day. The outside kitchen was super clean and well staffed. We received a copy of each of the many dishes we made. Yum.Written March 17, 2024
- aneeka930 contributionsHighlight of our trip to mexicoThis was the highlight of our time in Mexico and Oaxaca! We were allowed to pick from a wide range of dishes and given an informative local market tour. We then spent a few hours with refreshments cooking in the lovely garden cooking and learning. The tour operator was warm and made this experience great. Great location too. Would really recommend!Written February 29, 2024
- limzen0 contributionsOscar teaches us some local dishesMy wife and I had a lovely time learning some traditional dishes with Oscar. This was my second time taking a cooking class from him, and certainly not the last! This time, we did a private class, and it was both fun and informative. Would recommend.Written December 28, 2023
- 927normanr0 contributionsPerfect for recreating at homeWe experienced several cooking classes while in Oaxaca. While interesting, we did not leave inspired to recreate the recipes. However, Oscar demonstrated how these local dishes could be made at home. His recipes are Relatively easy and delicious. The meal afterwards was excellent. Would recommend highly.Written March 25, 2023

Oscar is very knowledgable, speaks great English and showed us how to prepare a range of dishes. The trip to the market was only a short walk and Oscar explained about numerous ingredients and uses during the tour. The whole experience was excellent and I would wholeheartedly recommend going. - alanlR8841NG0 contributionsIf you are into cooking, think about a private sessionAfter taking the group class, Flavours of Oaxaca (which was a great cooking, eating and social experience), I worked with Oscar privately for 2 different sessions. Those sessions were customized to my interested - and they were truly excellent. In addition to learning many new recipes, I was able to discuss the various ingredients wtih Oscar and learn how they are made, used - and the best time to buy them. For our second session, we went back to the market for more learning - and we decided what to make as we walked together and saw the best ingredients of the day. Then I brought home dinner to my family to big cheers. NOTHING was left. A big thanks to Oscar who is both patient and knowledgeable. My friends at home in Canada will be singing Oscar's praises once I get to cook for them!Written January 19, 2023

My husband and I took a cooking class with Chef Oscar as part of our trip to Mexico City/Oaxaca/Merida. I love to cook, and love trying new foods/recipes, so was very excited for this activity and my expectations were completely blown out of the water. To be clear, if you can only do one thing in Oaxaca, it should be this. Chef Oscar walked with us to the local market and showed us all the different kinds of ingredients used in his dishes. He also talked about the various villages around Oaxaca and what they produce, how chiles have different uses/names depending on if they're fresh or dried. We learned about all of the corns native to Mexico and how some are used. Back at his restaurant, he walked us through SO many recipes (tamales, tacos al pastor, 3 different salsas, moles, tortillas, ice cream), using fresh beautiful ingredients. My husband and I ate our meal in the courtyard (seen in a lot of photos already posted) and were both blown away by how cool of a day it had been. I cannot recommend this enough. If I could give it 50 stars, I would.

Oscar was exceptional and very kind. We met as far as I know at his place of business and his home and we walked a distance to the local market. It was a wonderful experience also getting to see some of the city and walking with a local.
The market tour was brief but very informative he picked up some items that we were going to use for the recipes.
I chose to make a fruit mole because I'm used to eating chocolate mole in Texas, so I wanted to try something different.
Oscar welcomed me into his kitchen and every dish that we created together was simply divine.
One doesn't have to know much about cooking, Oscar is there every step of the way and makes it fun because you're learning with ingredients most people don't use, like chiquitanas, a large flying ant.
I would definitely book again.

This was by far the best cooking class/experience I have ever had. Oscar was fantastic. It was unbelievable how we created a menu right there, went to the market to get the ingredients, and created the most amazing meal. It will be an experience that will live in our heart forever.

Oaxaca, Mexico offers so many historical sites to visit but for two afternoons, our eyes feasted on the culinary skills of Oscar Carrizosa, owner and creative chef of Cafe Crespro. On our first afternoon, Oscar walked our group to the local market abounded with so many fresh fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Upon our return to the kitchen, we all prepared the ingredients purchased as Oscar described the blending and marriage of all the spices, peppers, and unique eatable plants of the region. Along with his well-trained and friendly staff, the meal began to take shape. Many of us were using various sizes of knives, mortar/ pestles, and blenders to create our five-course meal. So on two beautiful Oaxaca afternoons, we enjoyed fresh salsas, ceviche, delicious soups of avocado and black bean, lamb, and chicken with different moles, and lime and chocolate ice cream. Our time was well spent with the Culinary Genius of our new friend, Oscar.

A cooking class with Oscar was very well organized. We prepared many different dishes and created a menu together. Everyone participated in cooking - which was really cool because we were able to focus on each particular dish.
Oscar is a great guy and an excellent chef. He explained everything and answered all the questions.
In my opinion, this cooking class is a very good way to explore local cuisine and I definitely recommend it :)

Oscar did a great job helping to explain a variety of ingredients that he bought in the local market (Mercado Sánchez Pascuas). His staff was great to help complete the meal, which we prepared and ate for lunch...multiple courses.
The others in the group were from all over the world (argentina, canada, new zealand, belguim, england), which made for fun coversation during lunch.

Oscar was extraordinarily knowledgeable about Oaxacan food and cooking, and it was very impressive how he guided our oversized group through the class, even patiently taking into account participant's food allergies and and diet restrictions. Oscar calmly guided us through the preparation of an amazing array of incredible dishes and ingredients, and the payoff was a wonderful meal at the conclusion. Even though the group was large, there was time to chat with most of the other people, who represented many different countries. Oscar promptly sent us recipes by email, and we are looking forward to recreating the meals we prepared. We highly recommend this class.

A delicious insight into Mexican cooking. Oscar is a great teacher and the class is super accessible. He explained every step in detail and his tour of the market was fascinating - inlcuding pointing out plants that are used for cooking and medicine as we walked through the park too. The ceviche and the tomato and prawn soup were particular highlights.

Wonderful experience with my sons (13 and 16 years old). We loved the local market tour and have since been back several times. Oscar and his team were so well prepared and organized for the cooking experience with us. Very hands on and the amount of menus we were able to cook in such a short time was just astounding. We’ve already made the homemade salsas as a family on our own and will soon try the Fiesta mole again soon. The final celebration meal showcasing all of our work was incredible and a lot of fun!! Highly recommend this class for families and beyond!

Can we bring an eight-year-old boy with us but not as one of the participants?

Do you ask participants for proof of vaccine? This would make me more comfortable. I don’t want to be indoors with unvaccinated people. Thank you! Hope to see you!

I was a participant as well. When I was in Oaxaca last October, everyone was very compliant about mask wearing and taking temperatures before allowing entrance to a business. I hope this helps!
