This was an amazing culinary experience! A must-do on your trip to Oaxaca. First, our group (a variety of tourists with culinary interests) sat around a table in a beautiful courtyard to collectively decide what we were going to make, based on options the instructor gave us. We ended up making 3 different kinds of salsas, homemade tortillas, 2 kinds of mole, chile rellenos, ceviche, squash blossom soup, crab empanadas and 2 flavors of ice cream. Everyone got to pick something that interested them. We then toured the local market with our instructor, a native, and learned about the different fruits, vegetables, herbs, meats & cheeses that are used in Oaxacan dishes, and we bought the ingredients for our meal. Back in the kitchen, I was amazed how the instructor took us through 8 or so dishes in a relaxed, organized manner (trying to cook 8 or so courses at home, I'd likely be setting something on fire). We got to ask questions, chop, blend, & stir while we watched the many dishes come to life. At the end of a few hours of hard work & learning, we sat down in the courtyard, back where we started the day, to enjoy this lovely meal with our group. My favorite part was learning how to use dried chiles in the moles and for chile rellenos. The dish I found surprisingly delicious was the squash blossom soup. I bought lots of local chocolate and dried chiles to bring home to try and recreate these Oaxacan dishes! We were also emailed the recipes, which will be an immense help. They sell an impressive selection of the local chocolates here at Casa Crespo, for 40-60 peso each, which are about the size of hockey puck. I may have bought 10 of them! I easily got a cab ride here & back for 70 pesos each way, but if you are staying in the central tourist district you can probably walk it in 15-20 minutes.

I just took the market tour and cooking class with my husband and a friend. The total group was only six. Emily led the class. She was wonderful- flawless English, very informative, fun and personable! She led us through the local market explaining all about the various fruits, vegetables, herbs and meat. Back at the restaurant, we were allowed to select a menu and participated in all phases of the meal. We made tortillas, 2 kinds of salsa, ceviche, lentil soup, red mole, and chocolate ice cream. We were offered beer and soft drinks during the cooking process and more beer and mezcal during lunch. We did several tours in Oaxaca - and this was the most fun. Our lunch was delicious! I highly recommend this class for anyone!

Oscar is a great chef and teacher! I enjoyed the experience very much! We made our own tortillas, we also cooked many different delicious dishes and went to the market. We were a big group and we all did some small jobs chopping, grinding, frying etc. I wish I could make the whole process of cooking by myself to learn better but as a demonstration of how to cook Mexican food from scratch, it was totally worth it!

A delicious insight into Mexican cooking. Oscar is a great teacher and the class is super accessible. He explained every step in detail and his tour of the market was fascinating - inlcuding pointing out plants that are used for cooking and medicine as we walked through the park too. The ceviche and the tomato and prawn soup were particular highlights.

I was very much looking forward to this experience, and it didn't disappoint. Oscar is a pro - quickly tailoring the menu to our group's preferences and guiding us through the market like he knew it as well as the back of his hand. For the cooking portion, he provides just enough history and instruction for a novice but curious chef. He's very patient, and funny too. In talking about how often people in the area frequent the market he said, "No Mexican who likes food eats old tortillas." Fair enough. I also want to give a shout out to Ampara who portioned all of the ingredients and kept our cutting boards clean.

In short, this is a great way to break up the shopping that folks visiting Oaxaca will undoubtedly do. I can't wait to get home so I can try some of these recipes in my own kitchen (we received an e-mail with instructions before we left Casa Crespo).

Wonderful experience with my sons (13 and 16 years old). We loved the local market tour and have since been back several times. Oscar and his team were so well prepared and organized for the cooking experience with us. Very hands on and the amount of menus we were able to cook in such a short time was just astounding. We’ve already made the homemade salsas as a family on our own and will soon try the Fiesta mole again soon. The final celebration meal showcasing all of our work was incredible and a lot of fun!! Highly recommend this class for families and beyond!

My husband and I took a cooking class with Chef Oscar as part of our trip to Mexico City/Oaxaca/Merida. I love to cook, and love trying new foods/recipes, so was very excited for this activity and my expectations were completely blown out of the water. To be clear, if you can only do one thing in Oaxaca, it should be this. Chef Oscar walked with us to the local market and showed us all the different kinds of ingredients used in his dishes. He also talked about the various villages around Oaxaca and what they produce, how chiles have different uses/names depending on if they're fresh or dried. We learned about all of the corns native to Mexico and how some are used. Back at his restaurant, he walked us through SO many recipes (tamales, tacos al pastor, 3 different salsas, moles, tortillas, ice cream), using fresh beautiful ingredients. My husband and I ate our meal in the courtyard (seen in a lot of photos already posted) and were both blown away by how cool of a day it had been. I cannot recommend this enough. If I could give it 50 stars, I would.

Oscar is a chef, not a teacher. He brought zero enthusiasm and no hospitality to the class. I have since experienced MANY other much better classes in Oaxaca. It was abundantly clear that Oscar had no enthusiasm in teaching the class, and I felt he was just going through the motions and getting through the class. At many points we would try to ask questions or clarifications, but surprisingly he would not take the time to answer or elaborate. He would simply provide a one or two word answer, stick to his script and move through the class. He made any questions or attempted exchanges with him feel like a burden. This is perhaps the worst cooking class experience I've ever had, and I have traveled the world and taken many cooking classes. There are better alternatives in Oaxaca. Would not recommend.

This is an excellent way to understand more about Oaxacan cuisine, we were given an opportunity to decide what to cook as part of a small group and then we headed to the market to discover many amazing ingredients ! Oscar was an incredibly knowledgeable and informative guide who taught us so much about he produce we were using. The cooking class was fun and easy to follow, he even made adaptations for me as a vegetarian which were delicious and I really appreciated. We then got to sit down as a group and enjoy a delicious meal and drinks. A wonderful way to end the class. I would 100% recommend this class to anyone looking for an authentic Mexican experience. Muchas gracias Oscar!

After eating the delicious food in Oaxaca, you will want to get to know how to cook it. We had a great time visiting a market and learning more about masa and traditional Oaxacan cooking. Then we got a lesson in making tortilla soup, handmade tortillas, rellenos, ice cream and more. Everything was delicious and we had a great time. We were in a group setting and enjoyed meeting the other participants and exchanging stories. Our host spoke perfect English so we didn't miss anything.
