About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Swamo78360 contributionsPerfect day in the mountainsEverything was wonderful The guides were extremely informative and super up beat and made for a great group experience. We also had superb weather which definitely made the hiking experience a day to remember The mezcal tasting was very enjoyable and provided a good understanding of the types and processes that go into making mezcal I highly recommend recommend this for a great day trip while in OaxacaWritten January 9, 2025
- JeromeR9330 contributionsThorough and Professional Monte Alban TourOur Monte Alban visit with Mike was the best of our many tours in Mexico. Not only did he share his extensive knowledge of the history of Monte Alban and its peoples, but provided insights into indigenous plants and how they were used past and present. He also helped us to book a taxi to the Oaxaca airport for the following day. Mike was friendly, engaging and a thorough professional.Written December 13, 2024

- fmckay0 contributionsExcellent day trip to Hierve de agua and mezcal tasting - great tour companionExcellent trip to Hierve al agua. Enjoyed visiting the bakery and the fabulous hike around the falls, swim was so refreshing and buying lunch there was great. Also enjoyed learning about making mezcal and they were very generous with the tastings. It was plenty to do in one day. Love tours by this company.Written November 26, 2024
- AlisaAbrenica0 contributionsGood tour, good foodCoyote was a friendly and knowledgeable guide who took us to all of his favorite vendors. We tasted different foods and beverages along the way. The lunch at the end was huge. Go hungry!Written September 30, 2024
- threeravensfly0 contributionsGreat Way to Spend Your First Afternoon in OaxacaWe enjoyed a wonderful, and informative, mercado tour with Coyote today. He’s a good guide and an interesting human. Because our group was very small, we were able to discuss more than just food and the market. The food and the market were the main thing, though, and we were thoroughly satiated, food wise and tour wise, when we parted ways. Recommend 👍🏽👍🏽Written September 5, 2024
- WellyNick0 contributionsGreat food tourI took the food/markets tour with Oaxaca by Locals that visited the Benito Juarez and 20 de Noviembre markets. My tour guide Coyote was absolutely incredible. It was just me on the tour so i think I got pretty lucky in that regard. Coyote was super friendly, extremely knowledgeable and made the tour easy to follow and understand. This is a must do if you’ve got limited time in Oaxaca and want to sample some of the local specialties. Highly recommend this tour.Written July 13, 2024
- kristysyc0 contributionsGood tour!Joined the “ Jalatlaco Street Art Walking Tour” and glad we did it! Of course you could just explore Jalatlaco area by yourselves, but the locals know what the stories behind many of the murals and street arts, and some hidden spots that you might not be able to find it yourselves. Our tour guide was very energetic and knowledgeable about the neighborhood and its history/stories. Though it’s a tip base tour (go to their website and book it) but we found it worth joining, especially if you are interested in street murals.Written May 12, 2024
- Inspire480793728470 contributionsMany tastingsThe tour itself was great! Alicia was wonderful, explained things well. Tried cheeses, chocolate, mole paste, chorizo, grass hoppers and more. The market was crowded so best to go with a guide. One issue- the starting point was far from the market. Suggest a closer meeting placeWritten March 27, 2024
- MarySt540 contributionsWonderful and informative tour by ElizabethElizabeth did a great job showing us both of the major Oaxaca markets - Benito Juarez and 20 de Noviembre. She was very warm and friendly and answered all our questions. We sampled so many local drinks, moles, empanadas, mezcals, cheeses, grilled meats, stuffed peppers and cookies. It was really a great sampling of Oaxacan foods. No need for dinner after this tour.Written March 7, 2024
- UKwondering0 contributionsStep by Step in OaxacaWe took the 10 AM Oaxaca walking tour on Friday February 23rd with Raoul. This was the best tour we took while in Oaxaca. Raoul was experienced, knowledgeable and funny. The pace was easy, and Raoul allowed time for us to rest and ask questions. The tour ended in a local organic market, which had stalls perfect for an inexpensie lunch.Written March 3, 2024

- Chimi T0 contributionsAn average tour. This tour promises 2.5 hours but the tour begins at the tour offices, so we ended up spending 25 minutes walking to the first market. The order of visits to taste foods was a bit hodgepodge — first stop tejate drink, second stop grasshoppers, third stop mole sauces, mezcal, and queso, fourth stop ice helado, then last stop at different market for meal of your choice (mole or tlayuda). Our tour started at 1:30 and the guide left us still eating at 3:50 pm. I felt the foods offered were okay — but many of the stops were mere samples already offered for free from the vendors. The only full serving offered was at the end. In my opinion this was not a high value tour.Written February 26, 2024
- sydellep20240 contributionsOaxaca by Locals - A Great Time Learning and WanderingMy daughter and I took a trip to Monte Alban, an alebrije workshop and a black pottery workshop with Pavel as guide and Aron as driver. They were both a delight to be with; very knowledgeable, personable, patient and flexible. We learned a lot about the history of all three locations which included the opportunity to watch the artists at work. I loved the fact that the guides were very accommodating and gave us plenty of time to wander in all three locations and gave me a hand, literally, with climbing up and down the steps at Monte Alban. After taking this tour and a few others with Oaxaca by Locals I would recommend them without reservation.Written February 22, 2024

This is truly an all day ordeal but was timed well so it did not feel long. Overall the day was pretty good and interesting, Pavel was informative, and made sure we got the whole experience at each location.
First stop the Tule Tree, we got some information from Pavel and then went in to look at the tree, there are kids you can tip for their service of pointing out all the little creatures you can see in the tree (natural not carved). It was interesting and just 20 pesos.
It would have been nice if here and every stop really, Pavel would have taken pictures for our group since we were just a group of 4 in the car and the larger group went in the van with Rodrigo. We had 2 singles and getting your picture taken is always tough as a solo traveler. Even as a couple we always like having a picture together that isn’t a selfie.
The second stop was the artisan stops of weaving and candle making. Personally it felt a bit too “canned” so to speak and in the end felt like we did need to buy something and it felt overpriced. The problem is, you don’t really know unless you are familiar with the craft and fair pricing. This is where it may have been helpful to get Pavel’s insight on what would be fair and potentially price gouging tourism.
Third stop was Mitla, this was an awesome site, small and interesting. It was pretty hot by this time of day which mostly led me to wonder why they scheduled Milta and our next stop Hierve el Aqua in the afternoon sun. Hierve has an hour long hike, we are from the PNW in the US so this wasn’t a very difficult hike. The swim stuff and not having the right shoes was the issue. In all the information I read, we were not really told there was a hike so I didn’t pack shoes for a hike but still did it in sandals. With that said; the top has the pools to swim in which was nice to cool down in, there are changing rooms and restrooms for 5 pesos by the pools. It would have been nice if again Pavel had gone in with us to take pictures and at least keep our stuff safe if we wanted to hike unobstructed. Or at least let us return to the vehicle after the hike. Hiking with a beach bag was a bit hard.
The mezcal tasting last was really interesting and Pavel did a great job explaining. The actual Mezcal is not my favorite (smoky) but their agave syrup was to die for! We bought some gifts for people and the total was 650 pesos for 1 flavored lower alcohol mix and two syrups (kinda $$) and they still said no to using our card unless it was 800 pesos. I know there is a charge for them but 650 was already high and we did not have the cash on us. That was a bit disappointing as it seemed they only wanted your service if you were really willing to spend at least $45 USD.

This is a really good see/do a lot in a single day tour especially at the price point. Our tour guide was engaging & informative while letting us also figure stuff on our own. If you are only in Oaxaca a few days or a solo traveler like me here for an extended stay I think this is a safe, easy, affordable , etc way to do "The best fo Oaxaca outside the city culture ,history, sites, & cuisine" all in 1 day. Highly recommended tour.
The only negative I suppose is I wish we could have spent more time at Hierve El Agua. It felt rushed at just 2 hours... but we had a good weather day.

A really great tour with a great guide! This tour is very affordable compared to similar tours and I couldn't imagine it being any better. Our guide Andrea was fantastic! She put all of her energy into making it a worthwhile tour, standing up most of the time in the travel van and explaining interesting stories about the history and culture, showing videos and photos, all while traveling in the van, which made the drive not feel long at all. We all learned so much about Oaxaca! Andrea is the sweetest person you will ever meet; she had so much patience, was very flexible, still smiling at the end, and still had her voice, which was amazing considering all the talking/teaching she did. You could tell she really wanted everyone to have the best experience. I am vegan and was pleasantly surprised by the many vegan options at the buffet lunch, which Andrea pointed out to me. Hierve El Agua is incredible and not to be missed. Mitlan is great too. I highly recommend this tour to anyone spending time in Oaxaca.

While this tour is a good way to fit seeing a lot of Oaxacan sites into one day, in our case the amount of stops made the tour feel rushed, and we ended up getting back to the city more than an hour later than planned. Another difference in this tour and other similar options is that one tour guide gives all the information in both English and Spanish, which also made the information seem more rushed than what I’ve experienced in other tours that were given in just one language. I would recommend picking a tour given in whatever language you’re most comfortable with instead of hearing everything said twice so multiple languages can be covered. I’ve been on a previous tour in Oaxaca that included a visit to the weaving town of Teotitlan del Valle (with a demonstration of the natural dyeing process of the yarn) and a mezcal factory, and both of these stops were more extensive, interactive, and detailed in that tour than they were in this tour. Also in our van, 2 people were seated at the very front while the tour guide was seated behind them, and we couldn’t hear the info he said during the ride or see the screen where he showed photos — there shouldn’t be more people booked for one van than can fit in the seats where the guide can be heard/ seen. The Hierve El Agua stop was definitely enjoyable and we had enough time to complete the hike (though not with many stops) and visit the pools before getting back on the van. Be aware that you do have to pay 180 MXN in cash for the lunch buffet, it is not included in the price of the tour. Overall, I think it’s a better idea to split up these visits into multiple tours or multiple single visits rather than trying to fit this many things into one day long tour.

It just wasn't very good in general to be honest. The communication from the tour guide on what was happening, what was up next, where we're going etc. Was almost non existent. "OK we're here everyone out" was the theme of the day. Some of the tour was only in Spanish too so if you don't speak it you're out of luck.
The stop at Tule tree, carpet sellers, and coffee break (after an hour of the tour..) were just to kill time before Mitla opened. Then we wasted another 20 minutes just waiting around, organising cash for the tour guide for entry, etc. Got some history of the site which was pretty cool but we didn't get to see the lovely church there, even 5 minutes would have been enough.
Then we spent another 10 minutes organising cash for entry to hierve el aqua and trying to give everybody correct change. By the time we got there it was the hottest part of the day and the hike down and back up was unbearable in the heat. Not to mention you have to go with a 'mandatory guide' that turned out not to be needed, who only speaks Spanish, and expects a tip regardless.
The lunch was your standard, overpriced buffet for 165 pesos per person, there is much better and cheaper food available at the Waterfall.
Finally the mezcal tasting which was actually really cool. They show you the process for making it and you get to try 6-8 different types. They were generous with the samples too and not just a couple drops.
The tour should really start with Hierve el aqua while the temperature is lower in the morning as its too hot at lunch time to enjoy it fully. The 2 stars are for our driver who was great and the sites themselves. Go see them but use a different company.

The tour is quite economical, 300 pesos for a day of transportation is quite good and you have a Guide who in our case shared a ride with another van.
The detail is that they were two vans of 20 and 21 people, they were not luxury, little space and somewhat uncomfortable in the back seats.
But if that doesn't bother you you're on the right tour!
They make a stop that does not appear on the tour at a bakery obviously to sell them to the bread business. And well, it's not rich, pretty common.
The rest meets quite well the textile workshop, the Tule tree is a hesitant to arrive to a small town where the tree is and charge you 20 pesos to approach.
Mitla same, in the middle of the village and obligatorily paying 95 pesos to see a single building
We stopped at a restaurant pretty equis to a firm, the food pretty regular, the moles pretty watery. Bad there.
Then we were taken to hierveelagua where sadly it is run by petty people, there are 3 filters to pay to be let in, and already the sadly horrendous place with terrible and expensive beer and drinks businesses
Dressing rooms and bathrooms do not have the minimum cleaning or care and without serious protection measures for visitors.
In the end they took us to a mezcal site where the idea was to try everything so they could sell at ease. But the quality was decent and good prices!
The tour in the end seemed like a kidnapping for you to spend on your selected businesses, but not all tours in Oaxaca do that??
The ride ended until 9:30pm so it was tired as we left at 8:30am
It has many things to improve as the transports that modify them to highlight 20 places worse than public transport! As I was seated at the end I had one of the horns in my head and the driver came up with the brilliant idea of playing his music so at the first stop I asked him to remove the music, which he reluctantly agreed to remove.
Another thing to improve is calculating time and letting businesses add so that Drivers and Guide receive their commissions.
Internet agencies should make sure the businesses they contract for the services because for giving a cheap price they lower the quality of the service they give.

The guide is very friendly and provides a lot of interesting information about the places you visit, I would have liked to spend more time in the Tule but the time is enough to take some photos and see the tree, I recommend having breakfast before going because the stop at The restaurant is already a little late. Communication before taking the tour could improve, since they answer your questions up to a day before the tour. I still consider it important to carry enough cash, since few places accept card payments. In conclusion, the tour is very good and is very enjoyable with good company.

We had a great tour where we went to the Tule tree, Mitla, the textile town, the mezcal factory and Hierve el agua.
The visit to the Tule tree is quick but with enough time to appreciate it. It is an impressive tree!!
The ruins of Mitla are small but very beautiful. All the shops around are very cheap and a great place to buy souvenirs and typical clothing. It will cost you less than half of what it would cost you in the city of Oaxaca.
Hierve el agua is beautiful, it is well worth going and appreciating the beauties formed by nature. We really liked this tour because it is one of the ones that spend the longest time in Hierve el agua. In general, the other companies are only there for about an hour and we were there for a little more than two hours. When the water boils you can go down the path to see the waterfalls from below (highly recommended) or you can just stay at the top in the little pools. Two hours seems like a good time to be able to do both activities, with one hour it is impossible.
Our guide Rodrigo is extraordinary, I can safely say that he was the best guide we had during our entire stay in Oaxaca (and we had several guides). He knows a lot about the topics, he is pleasant and keeps you interested in the things he talks about. We went with a small child and he was always very understanding of our situation and made sure that everything was fine with us and the child.
I highly recommend the tour since it is a quick way to see beautiful things about Oaxaca.

We had a wonderful time our our tour! Pável was a great guide and very friendly. Very good value with many nice spots included. We especially loved seeing the workshops where local artesania is made. Would recommend to anyone looking to get a taste of important sites and many local traditions in Oaxaca.

We had so much fun on this tour! 100% recommend booking. There are other much more expensive ones that don’t cover half as much- on this one you get to experience so much of what oaxaca has to offer - local trades + crafts, traditional oaxacan buffet, rare natural wonders, swimming / hiking & booze!
a best bit is that it’s run by passionate locals; who make it great by playing bits of authentic oaxacan music & sharing so much extra knowege - shout out to Pável! :)

How much is :
Entry/Admission - Tule Tree
Entry/Admission - Zona Arqueológica de Mitla
Entry/Admission - Hierve el Agua
(all NOT included)?

Our entry was part of our “Oaxaca by locals” ticket. Itemized I think it was $30 Canadian. The tour company paid it when we arrived.

There weren’t any kids on my tour. It is a very long day and honestly I feel kids would be very bored. The only fun part for kids would be the waterfalls, but as someone said before, you have to be very careful. That was the only place where I saw families with kids.
Honestly I wouldn’t take kids on this tour. I found it to be way too long of a day.

Hi is milta open on Tuesday or Wednesday? I heard they were closed during covid. Thank you!
Written January 2, 2023
Yes. But, they are closed on Monday. At least when I went & we weren’t told until the day of the tour & were taken somewhere we had already been instead. Consider booking with the tour guides once your in Oaxaca. Several available in the main square. Less expensive.
