If you are a curious foodie and want to understand Mexican local food at a local level this is the way to do it in Mexico City. La Merced Market is massive place and definitely not a place to navigate alone but with our guide, Tonille, it was an incredible experience. We felt very safe for those who may have those concerns. We ate, not sampled, but ate food and had drinks from 8 different vendors. Our food was ordered for us at each stop so we could watch it being made. Our guide explained the food, it's cultural history and importance and the derivation of each dish. Tonille's passion for her country's food anthropology was palpable. Carnitas, agua frescas, we learned the importance of insects in Mexican food culture before sampling, the range of flavor and colors of moles was mind blowing, asuerdo (brisket) longanisa and chorizo tacos and for the very curious cabeza tacos which were incredibly delicious. We each of us left with a goodie bag of traditional Mexican candies that Tonille selected for us, again with the history of each one as it related to some of the produce and other goods we saw being sold. You could be guided through the market and not eat anything and come away mesmerized by the selection and variety of goods sold. Our group was 3 and the perfect size. We left so full we cancelled dinner plans made for the evening. I will admit to baulking slightly at the advertised price of the tour but left feeling more than satisfied with the value of not only the food but also the quality and immense knowledge and very good English of our guide. Ask for Tonille if you go. You wont be disappointed

For any food lover, this tour is a must when visiting Mexico City!

Nico was so knowledgeable about the city, Mexican culture, and the market. For anyone considering visiting La Merced, you MUST do it with a guide! As a tourist it would be very difficult to navigate the market on your own, and you could miss out on the amazing stalls that Nico took us to on our tour.

The food we tried was all 10/10. Nico gave very detailed and informative explanations about the different foods we were trying, as well as the families that ran the stand. We made multiple stops but Nico made sure to portion things appropriately so that we weren’t completely stuffed after the first few stops.

Each stop is different and perfectly timed - from tacos, to tamales, back to tacos, to juices, to mole, it was very well executed.

Nico was super friendly and it shows that he has a strong relationship with all of the vendors.

The tour was 4 of us plus Nico, which was great to have it so intimate considering some of the tight spaces in the market. We went on a Friday and it wasn’t so busy, but I can imagine it would get hectic on a Sunday (market day).

Nico was the perfect guide for this excursion, and I highly recommend visiting La Merced with him (or any of the tours he runs!). Do not miss out on this very authentic experience!

My husband and I did this day tour on Tuesday 3/29 and we absolutely recommend it for anyone interested in an authentic experience in Mexico City. We were shocked to hear Clara was a relatively new guide, because she was wonderful and extremely knowledgeable. It would be nearly impossible to navigate the market without a guide. Going during the week rather than the weekend was a great choice.

So glad that we did this food tour. I love food, but don’t speak any Spanish, so trying a lot of street food or going to one of the markets sounded pretty intimidating. This tour was just what I was looking for. Someone knowledgeable who could guide us through the market showing us the best spots and also showing us something new. Adrian was an excellent guide, gave great recommendations, and accommodated all of our interests and dietary restrictions. My mother joined me, who can’t eat onions or cheese (which is not easy in Mexico), but Adrian always made sure she was able to eat something at every stop and also helped me purchase some dried chiles at the market as well.

This experience was definitely something we wouldn’t have been able to do on our own.

I would recommend this to anyone interested in experiencing Mexican food outside of the restaurant setting. Would 100% do it again.

I loved this tour and would highly recommend it to any slightly adventurous eaters. Yimnah was extremely friendly, kind, knowledgable, and made the experience entertaining with all of her stories and information. There was also so. much. food. A few of the vendors (Ricos Tacos and Moles Dona Balbi) had some of the best food we tried in Mexico City.

My friends and I had a wonderful experience on the Merced tour with Eat Mexico. I had been on a different tour with this company a few years back, and when I found myself in CDMX again, I knew I wanted to go on another tour. We absolutely loved the Merced Market tour, and our guide, Adrian, was exceptional. This is not a place that is easy to visit as a tourist, so I definitely recommend going with this group to get the full experience. Adrian is among the best guides I've ever met - knowledgeable, funny, kind, patient, and well-connected with all the vendors. He took us to some seriously delicious spots, and we tried things I never expected. I'm a vegetarian and my friends are not, and we were all really happy with all the delicious food we ate. Separate from the food - we were actually on this tour during the earthquake, and we were incredibly grateful to have been with Adrian during this scary moment. He quickly determined what was going on, and immediately and calmly got us to safety. He made sure we were all safe and stuck together, and remained a comforting and steady presence throughout. After we exited safely and determined that the earthquake was over with minimal damage, he took us to a nearby restaurant for some much appreciated mezcal. We were so thankful for Adrian's help and support during this time. Despite this interruption, we still had so much amazing food, and would definitely recommend this experience to any tourist in Mexico City!

This was such an incredible tour with such a wide variety of tastes and flavors. Navigating a market that huge would have been very difficult and intimidating on our own, Tonali lead us through it with ease. Tonali was amazing, friendly, good-energy, super knowledgeable about the food and the city - giving the history behind the different cooking styles and the meanings of the foods we were eating in the culture. They have strong connections with the vendors so everything is seemless. Easy to do if gluten-free. You'll finally get the true answer to the difference between a quesadilla and a taco (it's not what you think!) :)

This tour through La Merced is a must-do. Clara was such a fantastic guide. Our tour group was four people plus Clara as a guide. The tour is spaced out perfectly so you get just the right amount of portions at each space. Clara taught us so much history about the market, the vendors, the food items, and the individual ingredients. It was so worth it to have a guide with a culinary background. I cannot recommend this tour (and Clara as a guide!) enough if you are interesting in learning about and experiencing La Merced.

Our tour through La Merced with Nico was just one of the best experiences I have had yet in all of my travels. Nico was an amazing tour guide, full of passion and knowledge of the city and its history with food.

I had been to the San Juan market myself but this tour was something else entirely. Nico knew almost everyone at the market it seemed and he was able to navigate the amazingly beautiful market chaos with ease.

I cannot recommend this tour enough but specifically, I cannot recommend Nico more if I tried, he is one of the best tour guides I have ever met.

10/10 would recommend to any tourist here in Mexico city, BE SURE TO ASK FOR NICO!

What an absolutely fantastic experience! We had Hector as our guide, and he was truly amazing. Incredibly knowledgeable about the food and market while being super nice and making sure that we were all taken care of and felt comfortable the entire time. He even gave us recommendations for other places to try and neighborhoods to check out during our stay. Cannot say enough good things about him!

We really loved that the tour is limited to 4 people as it made the experience better (the market can be loud so easier to hear and ask questions) and easier to get around. And you should do a tour rather than go yourself - the market is huge and I can't imagine trying to navigate it without someone knowledgeable to show you around.

Oh and the food - incredible! Come hungry because you will be eating a lot. And my husband is a pescatarian and Hector made sure he had something at every stop as well.

Honestly, if you come to Mexico City, you have to do this tour. La Merced is a must see and this tour is the best way to see it.
