After being picked up at your hotel, take a 17-mile (28 km) bus ride from Mexico City’s historic center to Xochimilco and step onto a trajinera, a colorful flat-bottomed boat. With your guide, begin your voyage through these ancient waterways. You’ll see the chinampas—a system of floating gardens developed by the Aztecs centuries ago amid land shortages—and learn about how many of the city’s flower markets still rely on blooms produced in Xochimilco.
Afterwards, head to the main campus of National University of Mexico, itself a UNESCO World Heritage site, to see its iconic Central Library, murals by Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, as well as its stadium and bullfighting ring. The tour ends with a ride back to your hotel.
