#38 of 256 Boat Tours & Water Sports in Puerto Vallarta
- tammies95600Was a bit nervous about the little boat but…Whales a plenty! It is definitely worth the money! A must do. The smaller boats were able to move about faster than the larger boats, and we were able to see more whales. At least seven or eight during our excursion. One of the whales breached right in front of our boat. It was amazing.
- Cruiser82557700Wonderful informative and magicalWe had an amazing time! The trip was led by a biologist who started the day with a great presentation about cetacean biology before we got onto the boat. The crew was fantastic and worked hard to make sure we all had a positive experience with the dolphins while also avoiding disturbing them. The trip leader was happy to answer all our questions and was full of information about the specific dolphins we were swimming with as well as the species in general. They provided snacks, soda, and water, as well as masks, fins and snorkels. We brought our 3 year old and were nervous it would be difficult for him but he had an amazing time. Great experience, highly recommended!
- LV_LindaB00The one to pick! There are multiple offers out there, but I’d wholeheartedly suggest this experience for several reasons: a) there’s a guide whose a biologist can will tell you a lot of interesting things about the mammals before and during the boat ride, b) it’s a smaller boat, which is good, because it means the group is small and you are a lot more mobile of the water and can get closer to the animals, c) they also try to listen to whale sounds while out in the waters. A++!
- Carmen W00Great DayA great experience overall. The film and overview prior to getting on the boat was very helpful to gain a better appreciation for what we were going to see. The use of sonic equipment to hear the male humpback sing was wonderful. We felt safe with 16 people on board. The whales were fun and exciting to be near. The sandwich lunch was good.
- Y2994TPkathleens00Whale wondersOur trip was whale watching and before it a very knowledgable and interesting introduction from the biologist. She continued to inform on the trip. Saw different formations of humpbacks: baby and Mum with and without escort. Large group with lots of activity. Highly recommend.
- TSFam00A Must Do.Wonderful experience. I was nervous about being in such a small boat but the capt and the biologist made me feel very comfortable as they reminded everyone about safety. The whales were very active the day we went out. One breached right in front of our boat! Truly awesome experience.
- michellekT1480WC00Amazing experienceWe had the most amazing experience, there was only 9 of us on the boat so after a small brief we took to the water where there was a small group of male hump back whales close to the bay , and a solo orca we watched for a while which was amazing then after heading out and a bit of lunch we started heading back but had spotted a mother and her baby playing and breaching the water with a fantastic display which ended a perfect trip thank you to wild connection it was the best experience of our trip to Mexico something we will always remember
- Janice H00A Fantastic ExperienceWe (4 of us) learned so much from the biologists prior to leaving and then we were so lucky to see many whales. We followed two for half an hour as they rested close to the surface, then we came upon a mama and baby. The tour was well run, the boat was comfortable and the lunch was tasty. Very small group —6 people. What more could we want.
- kmhicks201700Disappointing experienceOur trip was enjoyable but the boat shown in the pictures was not on the one we went on. I sat on a cooler as there were no seats in the front facing forward and my husband knelt on a life jacket. Not an ideal experience and when I emailed the company, there was no resolution.
- travellover11900How do you even get a reservation. How do yo get booked. Booked thru Trip Advisor. Booked but credit card charge dumped after pending for 3 days. Rebooked. Charges pending still on day 2. Called Viator and they tried contacting vendor. No answer. So rebooked with different, but less ideal, than the the original vendor. Has this happened to others?
- NorthStar4837843777500A great day on the waterWhat a fun day! We went in the later trip with Pilar and had a wonderful time on the boat. She was very knowledgeable and it was a overall great experience.
- rhoadsr00Wonderful morning whale watchingWe had a fantastic trip with Pilar as our on board marine biologist and guide. Pilar taught us a lot about whales and their migratory habits, it is obvious she loves her job. We saw several groups of whales which we followed and observed for awhile. Then we happened upon hundreds of spotted dolphins which we traveled with, among, behind and within….so awesome! The right side of our boat saw a sea turtle, but he dove before the left side could see. All said and done, this was a great trip, more than we expected and we will happily go again. Your voucher says meet at the security gate, but there is a market/bathrooms by the dock and if you’re in that area Wildlife Connection will find you. We were offered water and refreshments including a sandwich. The boat was small, fast and agile. Great experience!!!
- Brybrysea79499500Our expectations were exceeded. We had a magical morning whale watching! We had the most amazing experience with Wildlife Connections from beginning to end. The tour was educational and respectful of the marine creatures. We visited in early February and took the 7am tour. The boat captain and our Marine Biologist guide were so lovely. We saw many whales and dolphins, as it was the height of mating seasons. The entire morning was magical and exceeded all our expectations.
- Mk69kate00Fabulous whale watchingWe saw tons of whales and dolphins! The guides knew exactly where to go for the prime spots to see the whales. They had a great video and description about whales and dolphins before hand.
- Ad van Gameren V00What a great experienceFor many years we go for a whalewatch (and dolphins) tour with Wildlife Connection. In the past we booked a ‘combination tour’ like snorkeling, swimming etc. But the Wildlife Connection tour is much much better. Their only goal is to take you to the whales and they do this with respect for the animals and nature. If you go with Wildlife Connectïon you will see whales, dolphins, turtles (and if you are as lucky as we were even Orca’s) in their natural habitat. The information you will get before and during this trip is great! (And so are the sandwiches!) Maybe you pay a little more, it is worth it. We can compare and tell you that Wildlife Connection is THE BEST!

We were about a mile off the coast when we found a pod of Dolphins. Two or three people at a time are allowed to go in and it’s amazing how they interacted with everyone for about 15 seconds. The Dolphins would move on and the boat would try and find them again or another pod.
After a while the Dolphins get bored and the driver tries to drop you off right in their path, so the Dolphins dive a little deeper and just go under you.
There were four groups of two jumping in and the interactions vary quite a bit, so it’s just the luck of the draw whether or not you have a good interaction when you jump in.
The guide was good but you need to sit through a 20+ minute marine biology lesson in a marina next to a dry-docked boat before you head off.
The experience is 10x better than interacting with Dolphins in captivity.

We were so excited for this experience. It turned out to be a big disappointment.
We weren't even provided the basics, like life jackets and snorkels. I'm not a strong swimmer and am not comfortable getting into the ocean without a flotation device. Several times we asked the guide for life jackets, and the answer was that they prefer we not use them.
We were provided with masks. We had to share fins and take turns using them with the other people on the tour.
The driver of the boat would drive around until dolphins were spotted, then 4 people were allowed to jump in the water at a time and were told to dive deep to see the dolphins (the dolphins would dive down as soon as the boat would stop).
All the dolphins we spotted were moving quite fast through the water. The boat driver would get in front of the dolphins and stop the boat. 4 people would jump in, wouldn't see the dolphins and would have to immediately get back into the boat so the process could be repeated.
The visibility was really, really bad and we couldn't see more than about 5 feet in the water. No one in the water ever spotted dolphins. We saw some on the surface, but that's it.
After 2 hours of chasing dolphins, we headed back to the dock.
I understand that these are wild dolphins and spotting's are not guaranteed. I chose this tour because I don't agree with dolphins being held in captivity to be used to entertain people.
I was disturbed with the way this tour company is handling this tour. I don't like that they harass the dolphins by continuously speeding past them and cutting them off. This isn't what I envisioned for this tour.

Cannot recommend this trip highly enough! The trip started with a short talk from a marine biologist who educated us on dolphins. We then went on the boat out to sea to try and find some dolphins.
There were 5 of us in the group total and I personally had about 1hr total in the water with the dolphins. We initially went in the water in small groups however later all 5 of us were in the water together. The water was quite murky however we were so close to the dolphins it didn’t matter. There were life jackets, fins and goggles/snorkel masks available for use and life jackets had to be worn whilst the boat was moving. I wouldn’t recommend this trip for those who are not confident in water- you are out very deep at sea and the dolphins will swim very close. It wasn’t particularly choppy however you did need to be able to swim well and get the best views if you dive down with the dolphins.
I chose this trip in particular because I did not want to visit a water park where dolphins are held in captivity and would rather see them in the wild. This trip was exactly what I was hoping for- the dolphins were intrigued by humans but are clearly not held in captivity or fed to encourage them to engage with humans. Touching the dolphins was absolutely not allowed and the staff had the upmost respect for them.

I’ve always wanted to swim with Dolphins but was turned off by the idea of doing that with dolphins in captivity. Not sure how many dolphins wake up and think, boy I’d like to have some dude from Texas kiss me and dance with me for 30 minutes :)...Every day.
So for me, this was the perfect compromise.
Started with a short educational session on what we’d do. Speedboat out to the bay included several nearby whale sightings as a bonus.
And then the thrill of the chase of finding dolphins was only outmatched by the experience of “Ok, JUMP IN AND PLAY!!!”
It was a risk bc since the dolphins were free, they could decide to stick around and play or move on! That’s what made the experience so much more special bc it felt like it was on their terms to stay. They’d be literally feet from you swimming around and under you it. It was equally exhilarating and beautiful.
The crew was super informative and successful at creating multiple dolphin swims for each client.
100% must do!!!

I gave this trip one star because I saw a beautiful whale up close but what this tour claims to be and what it actually is are completely opposite of each other. This was bucket list moment. To swim with wild dolphins. Now, I am fully aware that they are wild and that you can't guarantee to be able to swim with them BUT they claim that you CAN be in the water with them. They gave us, literally, less than a minute to jump in and out of the water to see a dolphin.
I am sure that was horrible on the dolphins to have random humans jumping in and out of the water. They also claim to be not so much tour guides but more like a research boat. NOPE! They are just both tour guides. Didn't give information on anything. Nothing. They also say the are handicap accessible. Once again, NOPE! If you are in a wheelchair, I would highly recommend you look somewhere else. I am handicapped and I have a cane. They barely accommodated that. They told everyone to jump in the water and I was still trying to but on my fin, finally the female guide helped me. I jumped (slid in is really what you do) and as soon as I did she told everyone to come back on the damn boat.
This was horrible. I liked that I got to see dolphins and whales up close but this is completely false advertising and robbery!!

Hola!!! before we answer I always check records and talk with staff to have the other version in the way we can answer properly. You went on our tour on Jan 2nd that day around 11:30 your guide reported that there was lots of wind (not normal in the morning) and it was making very hard to navigate as well to find more dolphins as there were few dolphins that you saw earlier at La Boca, she said to need to go back there even they were few dolphins due the very windy conditions. Also for the not normal windy conditions the boat was slapping a lot with the water, on the way back to the first group of dolphins the boat got a damage on a right section of the inflatable part, I need to mention that is not dangerous and it is just a section, that was fully repaired on the next days. Now I`m going to answer your other observations
1- To swim with wild dolphins. Now, I am fully aware that they are wild and that you can't guarantee to be able to swim with them BUT they claim that you CAN be in the water with them. They gave us, literally, less than a minute to jump in and out of the water to see a dolphin. ANSWER: As we always mention they are wild animals and not trained ones, we guarantee 100% to see them if not money back, swimming is not guarantee but 85% of the times we have successful swimming, on the day you went as mentioned before it was windy and needed to come back with the group od few dolphins, so both wind and number of dolphins makes harder to get in the water with them, we can´t control weather conditions neither the reaction dolphins will have each day, as that is on natures hand.
2 - They also claim to be not so much tour guides but more like a research boat. NOPE! They are just both tour guides. Didn't give information on anything. Nothing. ANSWER: THIS IS NOT TRUE, at the beggining of the tour we always give an educational talk, with a slide show and we have some material to show such as dolphin teeth, baleen of whales and some bones, on board there is always additional info given, Cristina is the guide that was with you that day, and she is a biologist with master degree, she has worked with blue whales and strandings, and now she is working with humpbacks, besides being a biologist she is an excellent eco-tour guide, you can search on many reviews and read how they talk always nicely about her.
2 - They also say the are handicap accessible. ANSWER: we have acomodated wheelchairs, elderly persons, persons with bacl problems even with recent surgery all of them have been treated as procelain pieces, normally they tell us in advance to be prepared for that. Unfortunately for you on the right side of the boat (the part that got damaged that day), we put a special ladder for persons who have problems but are capable to get in the water so they can get in & out of the water always with the help of guide and captain, we don´t drop them just like that we stop completely the boat and they slowly get in. Because it had damage this special ladder was not able to be put in.
3- I am sure that was horrible on the dolphins to have random humans jumping in and out of the water. ANSWER : If it was really horrible for them we would not do it, we never force them and when we see they don´t want or they are evasive we stop, and ir is also a reason why we don´t put everyone at the same time, everyone has to take a turn in the way that we are not invasive with the group of dolphins and not to make them uncomfortable, as we mention in the morning we are under their rules not ours
4 - This was horrible. I liked that I got to see dolphins and whales up close but this is completely false advertising and robbery!! WE ARE SORRY YOU HAVE THAT IMPRESSION BUT AGAIN WE CAN´T CONTROL WEATHER IN THIS CASE WIND THAT MADE OCEAN REALLY CHOPPY, WE ARE NOT FALSE AND WE DON`T ROB ANY ONE, WE HAVE BEEN DOING THIS TOUR FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS, UNFORTUNATELY YOU WERE ON IT ON A NOT PERFECT DAY

This is the hidden gem of puerto vallarta. As someone who has worked with marine mammals most of my life (in california), I am always skeptical of these programs but this one is INCREDIBLE. It is the most ethical, natural, and immersive way to swim with wild dolphins. The main researcher gives you a super informative talk before you head out and sets the ground rules (which I loved because they are all there to protect the dolphins). He never feeds, touches, or disturbs the dolphins -- just gets you in the right position to hop in and see them for yourself. They are truly WILD, if they want to swim away, they will. However, he has created a relationship with many of the pods and they knew as soon as we got in the water that they wanted to play with us. They would circle and almost dance around us so close - it was magical. They only allow 2 people in to swim at a time which makes your experience even more special, just you and the wild animals. A MUST DO if you are in puerto vallarta!

We had a great time swimming with the wild dolphins on this excursion. The group was small (10 people per boat) and so each person got to have multiple attempts at swimming with the dolphins. We also saw some whales and sea turtles along the way. Highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to see dolphins in their natural habitat.
A few logistics notes — no restrooms on the boat, but there are restrooms at the marina before you depart. Soft drinks and granola bars are provided at the end of the excursion.

This trip is well worth every penny! The tours themselves help support the efforts of this research and conservation organization and there is nothing like the thrill of seeing a graceful dolphin glide past you within arm’s reach. No touching, though! This is a legit wildlife encounter experience & respect for the animals and their environment are at the forefront. Only a couple people get in the water at a time and only when conditions are right. That being said, the generous guides of Wildlife Connection make sure you have plenty of chances to get back in the water for an opportunity for an encounter, and they offer good instructions on best techniques for making sure you have a sighting while in there. We also saw lots of pods from the boat, too, including a baby dolphin, and a group of five humpback whales. Highly recommended!!!

I love that this company encourages responsible interaction with dolphins. They are in their natural habitat, and you are not allowed to touch them, hold onto their fins, or anything else that could potentially harm them. That said, the tour guide and captain make every effort to ensure that each person on the boat has an opportunity to swim close to the dolphins a couple of times each. This means a lot of maneuvering on their part and guidance to passengers on when to jump out, where to swim, etc. They truly went out of their way to provide a great experience for everyone including those who did not want to swim. Well worth the price.

Kicked us off the tour 15 mins before departure after waking up at 6am and taking a 45 min cab ride because “trip advisor” had overbooked.. except we booked directly 4 months prior.
Convinced us to go on the Whale Watching tour instead with the promise we could still swim with the dolphins on the way back. That turned out to be “jump in the water for 3- 5 mins in the vicinity of dolphins” , did not see dolphins from the water or swim with them.
Go with a different company if you can. Will be disputing the charge with VISA and getting a reimbursement.

I’m thinking probably not. 😕 I did this tour last week and we had to check in for the tour at 8:45. They then do about a 15 minute lesson before getting on the boat.

It's about a 30 minute ride out to where the dolphins are, but that ride is generally over the shallower water closer to the beach.
If you have whale watching after, then you go out farther into deeper water.
I would say it was such a cool experience that even if you get seasick, take some dramamine or whatever meds help with seasickness / nausea and go for it anyway.

Hi there,
(Somehow my question went missing when i asked it earlier this week, so sorry asking again...)
I've read through a few of the reviews of this excursion and I see A LOT of people wound up not swimming with the dolphins, despite having a great time. My question is- what can we do to better our chances of swimming with the dolphins? Also, is there a time of year that's preferable for this activity, (or a season to avoid doing this)? We are arriving early Sept.

We went in early May and were able to find some to swim with. Some pods had babies but there were others that were safe to swim with. You may want to check with the company for best months.
I posted a question a couple of days ago. Do you have time to reply? Thank you in advance!
Hello, we are arrive in PV 7/16/21 for a week and would like to plan a day to swim with the dolphins. What day of the week is best to go given it is rainy season? Can we book the trip when we arrive in PV?
