    San Sebastian del Oeste
    Stop: 7 hours
We´ll go to a local distillery and later, an Organic Coffee Factory. Our lunch stop will be in a regional restaurant with delicious food. In the town plaza, we’ll visit the main church built in the seventeenth century and Doña Conchita’s Museum as well as free leisure time look around its amazing stores and nostalgic architecture. Our certified guide will make it one of the most beautiful and unforgettable experiences of your life. San Sebastián del Oeste is a little town with a lot of magic because its architecture, traditions and gastronomy. It’s located in the western part of Jalisco, close to Puerto Vallarta. Due the mountainous geography, this is a perfect place for the coffee harvest.  The history of San Sebastián starts in 1542, when the Spanish conquerors found a couple of mines that will give economic wealth to the town. At its high point, San Sebastián had a population of around 20,000 people but in in the nineteenth century the mining boom was finished.  For a while, San Sebastián was almost a ghost town, that’s why the old architecture and traditions were preserved. Now we can enjoy of it as an important touristic point in Jalisco: you have to visit the church of Saint Sebastian, Doña Conchita’s Museum, the main square with its beautiful gardens and the portals that surround it.  If you’re hungry, this is the perfect place for taste some regional dishes like tamales, enchiladas, pozole, birria, chocolate with raicilla (distillate of agave), coffee and artisan candies made with guava or apple.

History Lesson
I am rating 3 stars because we were in a bis with over 30 people which made everything slower. Pick up at hotel was on time but we waited 45 minutes at the transfer point. Tour guide Adam gave a lot of history on the way there which helped kill time on the 1 hr 45 minute trip. San Sebastian Teqiluolawas excellent and it is always nice to supporr the locals. La Quinta Coffee was also delicious, as was lunch. Please note we left our hotel at 930 and did not eat lunch until 215pm, which was a long time without food so bring a snack. We spent about 1.5 hours walking in town. Lots of history but with 600 people in the town, there isnt a lot of shopping which disappointed some people. Drive back had no "entertainment", so bring a neck pillow and headphones to take a nap.

Find another company for this tour for more time in San Sebastian
Jan 2020
We have traveled alone and with visiting friends to San Sebastian Del Oeste at least three other times with various companies. Our latest one last week was disappointing for these reasons: We were picked up at our hotel at the time promised with several others already on our shuttle, but stopped at four more times to pick up several others delivered to the PV Marina area to transfer to a large motor coach where others were waiting to jjoin us. By this time we were about 90 minutes into the tour before embarking on the drive through PV suburbs and finally into the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains (the Mexican tinier counterpart of the Rockies). Guide did a good job of pointing out flora and farming in rapid style with occasional small bloopers (800 meters "from the sea" for "above sea level"). But overall he was grumpy with poor customer service, wanting us to move along despite some in the group not able to get the complete details at the tequila stop, coffee plantation etc because smaller tour groups were ahead of us. Find out if your tour will actually get driven to the town square rather than having to walk from the coffee plantation and excellent lunch stop since our bus was not admitted. Slower folks in the big group could not hear the explanation, nor did the guide show the entire town square area and its unique history so the schedule could be moved along. A previous visit with smaller tour vehicle included a smaller family restaurant near the town square. The trip back to PV included no interpretation of what we passed by except a very clear statement about tipping: the guide held up a 10 peso coin and saying "school kids spend this" then a 50 peso bill and said "this would buy a good cup of coffee" and then made the comment "a generous tip is appreciated" with no exclamation about how the tips going into the basket would be split with driver who did an excellent job. The advantage of this company apparently is pickup at your hotel or some pre-arranged spot which guarantees a long delay of getting started on the actual trip or finally getting back home. You may be better off to ask specifically about the size of group, whether you can be driven to the center of town, etc. Other tours stop at a different tequila spot, too,but they are likely similar. This one was at a factory with the name San Sebastian in it but omitted demonstrating how the agave "pineapple" is baked which is key in understanding the early stages of tequila-making. Coffee plantation also omitted seeing how the coffee beans are spread out to dry. I noticed several in our group could not get into the grove area because of the numbers of tourists overall. Maybe this was just an "off" day. But to get the full experience, take a taxi directly to the tour office or meeting place and get on your way! Use your time wisely. And ask if the guide is truly "certified" as the brochure indicates. Ours had poor customer service understanding and genuine friendliness we see so often in this region.

Great tour with excellent tour guide
Jan 2020
Very good tour at an affordable price. The tour guide (Adam), had much energy and made it both educational and fun. Included all the sites, plus Adam gave history and background of what everyone was about to experience. He even (during the bus ride), spoke of Mexican history timelines, plus handed out samples of minerals and coins!
The lunch was fantastic and the sites genuine.
An enjoyable tour guide, makes a big difference! We enjoyed every minute.
The best.

Recommended Day Out
Jan 2020
We were 2 for the San Sebastian tour with Miguel, tour guide. Hotel pick-up was on time with a 15-min wait while various groups were sorted out with their coach and drivers. Miguel was friendly, knowledgeable with commentary focused on Mexican history. He reminded us that this was a village that has 'stood still' but is under threat from renewed silver mining activity. Stops at an artisanal tequila distillery and coffee roaster were interesting but a little long since they cut into free time at San Sebastian. Lunch was superb-see Comedore review. Walk-about in S Sebastian was slow w Miguel's commentary and we only had 30 min free time w 10 min walk back to bus. Good walking/hiking shoes a must over stoney roads. Water provided. Shop around for best price: we found USD 58 after first being offered USD 85 in our hotel. Highly recommended.

A wonderful day trip
We booked this tour from our hotel, Crown Paradise Golden, as they did 10 am morning pick up Upon leaving we transferred to a larger coach bus. Miguel is very much an expert on Mexican history, and helped pass the time . It is a two hour ride to the first stop which is the San Sebastian Tequila gallery, for samples and bathroom stop .20 minutes later we were in SAN Sebastian. Three hours of touring the town and enjoying one of the best Mexican lunch experiences in Mexico, back on the bus and arrived back at our hotel about 6:30. Thanks for a wonderful experience

Learn the history and experience the culture
Nov 2019
We did the tour of San Sebastian with Miguel. He was amazing as was Jorge, our driver. On the way to San Sebastian, we had a history lesson on Mexico. I was a history teacher and Miguel could teach in my class. We had an amazing lunch with the best mole. The town itself was beautiful and, because of the history lesson, we understood its significance. Highly recommend this tour.

Nice way to spend the day
We travelled to San Sebastián today. For the money spent it was very good. Our guide Adam Lopez was very good and thorough in trying to explain the history of the area to us in English. He was having to take care of Spanish speakers and well as English. While it seemed more discussions occurred in Spanish, Adam took great pains to make sure we were happy and had no questions. I feel he made a special effort to cover the material in English even though it is not his native language. The tour covered some interesting stops such as an organic coffee farm and tequila tasting. Lunch was at a lovely little restaurant in San Sebastián. The meal was wonderful. The bus was a little rough but the roads are rough. All in all money well spent and I would recommend this tour to anyone. Look for Adam Lopez!!

Guide was awful
We were very excited to go on this San Sebastian de Oeste tour. However, not only were we picked up 40 min late at our hotel but the tour guide, Adan, who explained the history of San Sebastián on our way up, was preferential towards the Spanish speaking clients. He would be enthusiastic in Spanish but not for the English speaking clients. He would explain for 10 min in Spanish then would only explain in English for 3-5 min. We knew there was a lot that we missed out on because there were clients who told us he explained more thoroughly in Spanish. That is too bad. We paid the same money for less history lessons. When Spanish clients asked questions, he never translated his discussions in English for us to be included in the discussion. Because we started off late, we got home later than expected. Next time, I will go with Vallarta Adventures who has a much better rating. Riviera Tours was recommended to me by our hotel Tours Concierge. Too bad but we made the most out of what we could. Otherwise, Tequila Distillery was just ok - never saw the stills or the blue agave or the process. Coffee tour again was ok but was not impressed - didn’t see the process or the coffee farm. This company seemed to just be more interested in quick sales. Food was good though.

Best Tour Guide with Sr. Miguel
Jun 2019 • Family
Sr. Miguel was our tour guide to San Sebastian from Riviera Tours. He has been a certified tour guide for more than 30 years and i shows. He has a unique command of facts about Mexico from pre-columbian times to modern days. he knew the families and their descendants that populated San Sebastian. The tour was full of historical facts that keep us excited and eager to know more. We walked with Sr. Miguel to a tequila distillery, coffee farm, and around town, including the historical building were the small town police is located. Everything was perfect about this trip including a great lunch. Also our driver Daniel cruise with ease and very safe the round and round road to San Sebastian.

Visit San Sebastian to see "real" Mexico
Oct 2018 • Couples
I did not have any of the issues with not being able to hear our guide or having problems with the bumpy road (I am scheduled for back surgery in July!). I found the town idyllic, lovely, and felt as if we stepped back to the time of the conquistadors. When we were in town, our guide showed us a couple of wonderful hotels to which to return and advised us on the best shopping. I hate that everyone else had such terrible comments.
