- juliedO3630XL0 contributionsShop and Cook TourWhat an awesome experience! Shopping at the mercado can be overwhelming when you are not fluent in Spanish. After our tour, I not only think this is something I can do but something I want to do. Arriving at Yolanda's, we were welcomed into her lovely home. She had created the perfect kitchen set-up for hosting and teaching us how to cook her signature dishes. We enjoyed getting to know Yolanda and cooking with her. The recipes we made were delicious. I cannot wait to try them again at home with my family. A big thank you to Yolanda for opening her home to us and to Maaike for a one-of-a-kind experience!Written January 13, 2025
- LivingMyLife20 contributionsA Tour Worth TakingI wish I could give this food tour more than 5 stars. It definitely was one of the highlights of my recent trip to Mazatlan. Wendy, our tour guide, was exceptional! I loved how she first gave us the historical backdrop of Mazatlan before telling us about the culinary richness of the city. The tastings were phenomenal. Be prepared for a LOT of walking, but every step is worth the experience. I highly recommend this tour. You won't feel rushed but will leave the tour with so much knowledge and a taste of the flavorful foods of one of Mexico's prettiest resort towns.Written December 24, 2024

- PeteN3910 contributionsNight Eats Tour. You need to take this one!The Flavor Teller Tours are all great. I took 3 in a week, and each was a very different set of experiences, knowledge, and food stops. Each tour guide was very professional, friendly, knowledgeable, and with excellent English skills. The food stops are well-curated, clean, and with generous portions. You will not walk away hungry. Flavor Teller tours are important to get a sense of what's good in Mazatlan...unless you're a local. The Night Eats tour starts and sunset and wraps before it gets too late. Lots of great stops at places you would not find on your own. The guides are beyond knowledgeable and very enthusiastic. It is a great experience.Written December 11, 2024
- Tari B0 contributionsA must-do in Mazatlan!!Our tour guide, Eduardo led us on a spectacular itinerary beginning with a breakfast shrimp or mahi mahi tacos, to the harbor where we saw crews unloading their catch. Eduardo was very informative about the industry and processing. We then visited a historic venue and enjoyed shrimp empanadas. We later visited Emilio’s for a delicious shrimp tostada, then onto another street vendor for tuna pate/wonder bread staple that we found delicious! Next stop, closer to the Machado, Liguillas! We had a crab tostada there, yum!! We ended with a stop at the oldest Panama Bakery in Mazatlan and enjoyed guava pie. The stops were great, we never would have found them on our own. We’ve already gone back to a couple of the stops. Eduardo spoke clear English and gave us a ton of historic information!!! What a pleasure!!Written December 11, 2024
- Jennifer H0 contributionsGreat tour!We had an amazing tour with Wendy! We learned so much about the history of Mazatlán- Wendy is knowledgeable and a great story teller. - Kara R0 contributionsAmazing cooking experience! We did the kitchen cooking experience with Yolanda. The owner and tour guide Mika was awesome. We had a little history of Mazatlan, a great tour of the Mexican market where we bought the ingredients for cooking and then made our way to Yolanda’s personal residence. We assisted in making some fantastic ceviche, all of which was amazing and even took so much back to the hotel. Yolanda made us feel at home in her kitchen and Mika even took us to a coffee roaster afterwards as we mentioned we wanted to buy some coffee. Overall a fantastic experience and we would definitely do more tours with this company. The small sized yours were also fantastic.Written November 24, 2024

- JoannaC630 contributionsFabulous food tour! What a great day with Eduardo! It was easy to find the meeting place (15 min walk from the cruise terminal). We started with a yummy taco and then headed to the harbor where Eduardo (in excellent English) explained the process of the shrimpers and processors. At each food stop, he told us about the people who owned the restaurant and everything was so delicious! Highly recommend!Written November 9, 2024

My family and I really enjoyed the Barrio Bites food tour. We visited some amazing places, and each provided wonderful street food. We enjoyed eating with the locals and having conversations with the owners. We also visited a local tortilla factory and tasted a freshly made corn tortilla. We visited a wonderful restaurant that provided a large plate of food for us all to share. Included was a visit to a fish monger. We were able to taste smoked tuna! In total we visited 6 or 7 local food stops.
This tour lasts about 3 hours and it is ended with a trip to a local brewery.
Eduardo is an excellent tour guide and I would recommend this food tour to anyone that is interested.

We did the Barrio Bites tour during our stop in Mazatlan on Holland America's Koningsdam during the last week of March. Eduardo took us to seven different places to experience authentic street food and restaurant-quality eats that I'd definitely return to in the future. We learned more about living and working in the city than any other tour I've been on. I highly recommend this tour - you're going to see, eat, drink, and experience things you'd never find on your own. Our guide Eduardo was great!

If you’re considering a food tour in Mazatlan, look no further! We had the pleasure of joining a tour led by Eduardo, who was a standout guide- kind, gracious and impressively knowledgeable about the city, its rich history, and the people who make it vibrant. Eduardo’s passion for Mazatlan shone through as he shared fascinating stories and insight about the area, which really added depth to each stop. Every stop on our tour was unique, offering an incredible variety of food and drink that highlighted the diversity of Mazatlan’s culinary scene. We sampled traditional street foods with each bite telling its own story. Meeting the local merchants was not her highlight; they welcomed us warmly and shared their own experiences, making the tour feel incredibly personal and authentic. I can not recommend this tour- and Eduardo enough. It was an unforgettable way to experience Mazatlan’s flavors and meet the wonderful people who bring the city to life! If you want a memorable, mouthwatering journey with an outstanding guide, BOOK this tour!!

We were treated to a wonderful adventure traveling around in a tour truck, visiting food stands that have been in Mazatlan for two and three decades. Maaike infused her knowledge of the neighborhood and the cultural heritage of the area with special treats at every stop. A must to due tour to acquaint you with the downtown food scene and the local markets.

Don’t eat one thing before taking this tour because there is plenty of food to taste. There were only 4 of us to include our guide El Gordo very personable & knowledgeable of Mazatlan and its rich history. The weather started off hot but we were grateful for the partly cloudy afternoon. Glad it wasn’t a lot of walking because of the heat. The truck that provided transportation was open so we got a lot of cool air as the driver transported to each destination. Be careful of the 1st food stop (Tacos El Veneno) the food is so delicious, but there’s macaroni salad that will put your mouth on fire lol. The owner is very friendly, he plans on having his own restaurant in the future. Next stop we had turtle soup, excellent! Next stop Chayito Cenaduia excellent service & amazing food. Next stop shrimp market we tasted freeze dried shrimp at Camarón Seco, I passed on that. Next stop small business that made fresh tortillas. You gotta buy some to take with you, they were delicious with a little salt. Next stop fish market, we had smoked Marlin and blended down Marlin kinda of paste like dip all so delicious. Final stop Cerveceria Tres Islas where we tasted a variety of beers. Very friendly and personable staff made us feel very welcomed. Great tour hands down!!

We had a blast and learned a lot on the Barrio Bites tour! This was our first time in Mazatlan, and this tour was a great way to discover the city, and to learn about and enjoy its culinary history and culture. Eduardo took us to several "off the beaten path" establishments and shared a wealth of information at each stop. There was plenty of variety to please all tastes. We really had a great time and will recommend this tour to our friends visiting Mazatlan. Thank you Eduardo!

We loved this tour through Mazatlan! To start, Maaike was terrific in opening up another tour for us since the 10:00 tour was sold out on the day we were in port. Eduardo was our guide and he was very friendly, knowledgeable and engaging as he took us around PV. We were able to try several different dishes we wouldn't normally have tried and the tour was much more than your standard taco tasting tour. Eduardo filled us in on the history of the city and he didn't try to gloss over the more unsavory aspects. We didn't walk away hungry and will look to try other tours from the Flavor Teller the next time we are in town.

We went on the Barrio Bites tour with Eduardo. There were 4 couples on this tour, so it was the perfect size. A couple of places we stopped at were “carts” (not a permanent restaurant) and not places we world have ever found—or probably even tried on our own. The food was really good and the owners and workers were very friendly and accommodating. Although the tour is listed as “bites”, we were stuffed at the end.

What an amazing way to discover the 'real' food bites that Mazatlan has to offer. Maaike knows the food vendors and takes you to the most interesting places in Mazatlan to enjoy delicious nibbles. By the time you have finished tasting, you will be full, so arrive with an appetite. It's fun to be driven around the city to so many unique food stops and learn about the history of Mazatlan at the same time. Great experience!

Hi Grace! Thanks for your sweet words and great advice. A curious appetite is always an essential when you join a Flavor Teller tour. The vendors that we visit, have been serving local delicacies for decades. Wasn't it fun to connect to these families and Mazatlan's rich history? Hope to see you again soon, hasta pronto!

We’ve done great food tours in many cities around the world, but this was one of the best! Maaike was incredibly knowledgeable about Mazatlán and its cuisine, and her passion for sharing her love of the city’s street food was apparent throughout the tour. She took us to the places that only the locals go—mostly food carts and holes in the wall that we wouldn’t have dared to visit on our own, thereby missing out on many authentic (and delicious) specialties. But it was really her insightful commentary and breadth of knowledge that made our tour really special. Seriously, if you’re a foodie, skip the big cruise ship shore excursions and instead take this small-group tour if you’re in Mazatlán. You won’t be sorry!

Hi David! Thank you for your Must-Do rating of the Barrio Bites tour. It looks like you caught the Flavor Teller fever in Mazatlan. Wasn't it fun to discover the hidden gems of our street food scene? Food gives you the chance to see the real Mazatlan beyond the beach and tourist areas. Hopefully you will come back soon and join us on another Flavor Teller tour.
