- Curiouslife1620 contributionsFun, informative, and tasty! We had a party of four (including one 19 yo) and had a terrific time. Our guide Jenny was very engaging, easy to talk to, and had great information about historic VI and changes since the hurricanes/pandemic. Our four stops were very diverse - getting a sense of local flavors and the community culture. We would go back to all the venues for more! Don’t be put off by 2 hours “walking tour” - we enjoyed time inside talking, tasting, and cooling off. Would recommend to anyone visiting St Thomas for the first time. Also, one if our party doesn’t like crowds, so this small group format was a great way to see Charlotte Amelie when it’s busy with lots visitors.Written March 18, 2023

- Trip5659410 contributionsFamily Of FourI loved trying new foods and eating in establishments I probably wouldn’t have stopped in otherwise. Our docent was knowledgeable about the history and shared great info with us about the island. I would recommend it to any family looking for something different to try or do. The portions were generous and we all left very full - even my teen boys.Written December 22, 2022
- P2587NE0 contributionsDisorganized & DisappointingSave your money & do a quick Google, then explore independently. Pros: What food we did taste was from local vendors, authentic, & reasonably tasty. Cons: The instructions indicate you should meet the guide, who will be wearing a yellow shirt, on the steps of Fort Christian on Main Street. None of the streets surrounding Fort Christian are named Main Street. The guide did not wear any yellow at all. The tour guide, Jenny, repeatedly left locations and crossed streets without all members of the group. An employee from a restaurant saw me waiting for someone in another party and angrily commented that Jenny leaves people EVERY DAY. When Jenny did share history, she didn’t make sure everyone could hear her. What we could hear wasn’t remarkable. She never offered to take people’s photos. We only went to 4 places and left hungry.Written December 21, 2022

Gerard was the perfect tour guide; knowledgeable, friendly, and funny!! He took us to places we would’ve never been able to find ourselves with delicious eats all while giving us a great background of the history of the island. We learned a ton and walked away with full bellies. We highly recommend doing this tour while your on the island. It was probably our favorite experience while we were here.

1. Gerard is a fantastic guide. Extremely knowledgeable, and presents information in a narrative format that is educational and entertaining. Very accommodating as well, making sure everyone feels included.
2. LOTS of food and several stops make this a great value! Gerard's interactions at each place of business makes it clear he has a friendly relationship with the owners. And you're getting truly local flavors (E' Garden Tea House & Things, Gladys', MBW Bakery, Amalia Cafe, and a couple of other places).
3. Easy tour, not too rigorous, plenty of stops for pictures and rest. For first-time visitors to the island, this is a MUST DO, as it provides excellent context for the rest of your trip.
4. After the tour, we returned to MBW for the jalapeno baguettes (made fresh daily and abso-freakin-lutely delicious) and then returned to Amalia Cafe for dinner. (and we're returning to E's Tea House as soon as i finish typing this, lol)

I was a little skeptical that this would be a tourist trap tour but boy was I wrong! Gerry showed us hole in the wall places that we would have never found on our own, ordered us dishes i never would have guessed were the best on the menu, gave us a great St. Thomas history and even told us the best places to buy rum. He is a charming guy whose love for the island shines through. One of the best parts of our St. Thomas trip!

So often it's the places just off the beaten path that become a most memorable parts of a trip. I loved sharing them. Gerard

Gerard was amazing and truly loved the culture - you could tell! I loved learning about the buildings and the history of them. The food was AMAZING. We went on our last day on the island. I would highly recommend going on the earlier side of your trip, so that you can see the food and drinks that the island is more known for. We struggled to find more authentic food during our trip, and this tour really helps you to understand more of what their staples are. Best way to spend our last morning on the island. Thank you Gerard!

The food was good, the guide was nice, and the history was lacking. By chance, we got a private tour as we were the only ones to book the tour at that time. This was nice during COVID to not worry about eating with a bunch of random people, however, we would've been able to have more conversation with a larger group. As it was, with just the guide and us there were some awkward silences. Gerard, our guide, was knowledgeable about the island and cuisine, and was able to answer all of our questions. There was a good variety of food, including rum cakes, teas, conch fritters, other Caribbean fare, and of course, we tried the famous painkiller. Gerard also took us by a good rum shop on main street. We were originally skeptical (it felt like he had an agreement with the store to sell us rum), but after agreeing on the basis of free and unlimited taste tests we were presently surprised and ended up going back to buy a few bottles of local rum to take home with us. At the last food stop the vendor had ran out of food, this isn't on Gerard, who even told the vendor earlier in the day to reserve some for us as we had a later tour. Gerard made it up to us by getting us two painkillers a piece, which took the edge off of missing out on a local favorite.
As for how much history was included on the tour, it was less than advertised and certainly less than what you would get on a history tour. We learned about Fort Christian and the founding of Charlotte Amalie, along with some pirating fun facts. We missed the 99 stairs completely, so will have to go back to learn about those. In regards to recent history, Gerard was able to share his experiences during, and after, the hurricanes in 2017, which was definitely a valuable perspective and gave insight into the ongoing recovery.
Gerard was able to recommend other restaurants for us to try, and things to do on St. Thomas and St. John, making it was nice to have done this tour on the first day. It was a good introduction to downtown Charlotte Amalia and island food, but not the whole story.

Thanks for your thoughts on the tour. We try to tailor the history we present by trying to assess the level on interest of the guest. I guess some are tougher to read than others. The whole story would take lunch through dinner! Gerard

My college-aged son was visiting St. Thomas on Spring Break and I have lived here a little over 1 month. We were both excited to learn more about the history of St. Thomas and to be introduced to local restaurants. Food & drink were delicious and Gerard was a fantastic guide.

The tour started off slow but did end much better than I was expecting. We stopped at My Brothers Workshop and had a small piece of rum cake and heard about all the good they do for the community, then off to E's Tea Shop for tea and salt fish over salad. I never would have ordered it but was tasty and glad I tried it. Owner was not there so could not buy anything. It then seemed like the guide was trying to buy time and she was. I started to think I hope I didn't pay $$ for a small piece of cake and tea. After seeing 99 steps we made our way to Gladys Cafe. Must say the staff there was a bit rude. I understand they were busy, but they knew there was a food tour, and we should not have had to wait as long as we did. They obviously wanted to sit full paying tables over us and continued to do so until we finally got tables after our guide asked several times. Had conc fritter, soup and corn meal item. Finally, we made our way to a vendor selling pate (island version of empanadas), tasty but could have used a sauce and then we ended our tour with a pain killer drink at a local outdoor bar. I was expecting more history of food but did learn about the island. Had a good time and wish we did the tour in the beginning of our trip so we could have gone back to some of the eateries on our own.

We enjoyed our tour! As soon as Gerard introduced himself to us and heard my husband's name he said, "no fish, right?" That little touch won us over immediately. He wasn't looking at his notes or anything. We felt we were in good hands. The history was interesting and the food was good.

This is a walking tour of St. Thomas downtown. It is an east walk but on uneven surfaces with elevation changes so make sure you are a very capable walker as anyone who needs walking assistance will not enjoy this tour. We stopped at 4 places, the first three were food oriented and the final for the island famous pain killer beverage. The states of the local food were very good. The tea shop stop was my favorite as the owner is extremely knowledgeable of the history of St. Thomas, has wonderful tea blends and served a salt fish quiche that was amazing. Our guide was very knowledgeable in the history and shared information as we walked past historic buildings.

We are coming into the cruise terminal in 2 days. Are you far from the port? Do you pick up/drop off?
Written March 6, 2022
The fort where the tour starts is about a mile from each cruise ship dock. It is very walkable from the Havensite area, but I would recommend a taxi from the Crown Bay terminal.

Is the tour 6 hours or is the time just a window for the day?

We currently have an excursion booked for the first of April and are concerned about this whole Corona virus issue and how you are handling the cruise ships not being able to port. We are considering canceling our excursion so we aren't out that money, in case this happens with ship. Please let me know how you are handling this. Thanks for your time!
