About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- N2693XMdavet0 contributionsZero stars Terrible bartenderWe walked in to the bar sat down, looked at drink & food menus. The bartender (Ryan?)was swearing & just had a terrible attitude, insulting & rude, to the point where he wasn’t even done making the drinks and we had enough, cancelled food orders and left. The place was empty and now we know why!! Every other bar we went to before & after was crowded with people having FUN!! The owner might want to wonder why??Written February 12, 2025
- Phil D0 contributionsTerrible food and serviceHad dinner at Toppers and the food is terrible!!! Probably haven’t changed the oil in their fryers, but that is only the awful french fries they served. Stuffed mushrooms, no crab visible cold and greasy. Mahi reuben was almost inedible. Worst restaurant in Sint Maartens! Wonder why they do not come back to the table to ask how dinner is, they already know, it’s poorly prepared, over-priced and just tasted terrible! $85 for two to not eat, then went for dinner elsewhere .Written January 19, 2025
- dinop1520 contributionsdisappointed. Distillary tour surpassed my expectationWhat a great find. Our host Cristina was extremely knoligeable and informative. The rum tasting was the best I have ever been to. It's small boutique distillery but they manufacture over 20 plus different flavored Rum. We sampled many different flavored rums. I highly recommend it. They are also a restaurant which will definitely try next day or so. They also sell gelato which also is excellent. I cannot say enough good comments about it. We will definitely go back soon next time we are in the Island. Definitely try it you will not be dissapointed.Written January 15, 2024

- NorthStar015901313560 contributionsFun day, Rhum day!Our tour guide, Cristina was amazing! The tour was informative and fun. The rhum was AMAZING. If you are in St Maarten, make this tour one of your stops; you won’t be disappointed!Written October 24, 2023
- prettybrowneyes830 contributionsGo for itGreat experience and fun. We didn’t make a reservation for the tour and just stopped in. We did the $15 tasting which started with rum cake. We then had many many many tastings. My favorite was guavaberry since I had already tried the colada the night before elsewhere. The habanero peach was also very good. The have a lot of signature flavors only available in St. Martin. I’m not a drinker but I enjoyed my visit. We returned the next day and purchased guavaberry, rum cake, and gelato.Written September 20, 2023
- JillW6180 contributionsSo DisappointingToppers has always been one of our favorite stops on our many trips to Saint Martin. Today we went to the new location for the first time. The location in very nice. The staff are professional but not friendly at all. They now charge for everything. Tasting were once free and fun, no more. The price of the tour went up to $25 a person. It’s a good tour but $25 is over priced. We ate at the restaurant. Food was not so good. The best thing about the place is the amazing female bartender. She is on top of things, pleasant as well as professional.Written April 22, 2023
- jemica0 contributionsAwesome DinnerAwesome atmosphere & wonderful meal here. Didn't do the Rhum tour. We spent 10 days in St Maarten & wanted to eat at a different restaurant each night, otherwise we would have come back here a second time.Written April 10, 2023
- N1305GFgabrielp0 contributionsCheck out the tour, restaurant, gelato, and specialty rumsThis is a great stop for tourists in St. Maarten, especially (but not exclusively) if you're a fan of good rum. The highlight of this location is the tour - I've covered this in another review, but suffice is to say you learn a lot about the history, uses, and production of rum in a fun, approachable way, with many samples along the way, and the ability to help through cooking demonstrations or even running the bottling machine if you're chosen! Aside from this, I'd also recommend the restaurant - anything they serve involving seafood is great (particularly the salmon alfredo), and their cocktails are great (especially the bahama mama). If you come at the right time of the afternoon, you may even see Mr. Topper himself at the restaurant - we did, and he was very kind and said hello to passing customers. On your way out, be sure to pick up some rum for the trip back - while they do have about 6 flavors available in the US (at Total Wine), there are many specialty flavors that are limited run, and only available at the distillery for a short time (of these, the Tropical, Salted Caramel, and Crazy Dave flavors were especially great when we visited). If you get nothing else from the gift shop, make sure you pick up a rum cake (these were so good I got extra for the flight back), and some gelato (rum raisin and white chocolate raspberry were fantastic). I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting St. Maarten, as there's something for everyone here.Written March 28, 2023
- shenry13130 contributionsUnfriendly staff!Stopped on a Celebrity cruise tour. The most unfriendly staff we encountered! One girl was so rude! You can only have one tiny drop of rum! Ridiculous! There was another girl off the side by a dispenser, maybe Crystal? Can't remember her name but she was nice. We tipped her. Very underwhelming, unorganized stop.Written March 8, 2023
- Marc B0 contributionsSo many to try and tasteWe stopped in to just grab a few trinkets as the brand name Topper's is one familiar to us in Northern Ontario but for an entirely different product. Our intention was to just stop in briefly and pick up a few souvenirs however we ended up staying longer. There's a lot to experience and try here, not just rhum, however this is the draw. We stayed for a couple of drinks in the restaurant which I was thrilled to see a drink made with Ting so I had to try it. My girlfriend had the best Mai Tai of our stay. Although we didn't book a tour, we were really fortunate to have met Cristina while shopping, what a gem of a "guide" this lovely young lady is. She really made our experience here that much better, and was so helpful in selecting which rhum to bring back with us. Next time we come here, we are booking a tour with her.Written February 20, 2023
- parrottdize0 contributionsPart of a cruise excursionThis was a stop on our cruise ship tour. You can try a number of their rums, of course you can buy them too. They do have a gift shop and also snacks that can be bought.Written January 22, 2023
- Pennaheel0 contributionsSo much fun!We took the distillery tour with a small group (8 in total). Our guide was so informative and kept the tour fun. We had unlimited samples of Rhums sold only in St Maarten and purchased the Eggnog and Strawberry Jalapeño to take home. The pineapple chicken cooked in spiced rhum and the rhum cake were delicious. This is a fun tour.Written December 3, 2022
- Six_in_the_Field0 contributionsGreat selection of RhumAlthough we didn't take a tour, just wandering around the store reading about the different kinds of rhum was quite interesting. We ended up walking out with several bottles. Recommend!Written December 2, 2022
- Nic S0 contributionsDefinitely go to Toppers! This was a nice pitstop! We went buy, did some rhum tasting, had some Gelato, and sat at the bar for a while to try some delicious rhum based cocktails (with the rhums they make inside). We had the Mocha Mama Espresso Martini, the White Chocolate Raspberry Martini, a Cosmo, and a Lemonade Cocktail. They were all delicious but the Macha Mama Espresso Martini is a MUST have after a long day of tours and being drained by the sun.Written September 4, 2022

Toppers Rhum Tasting Tour is an excellent way to spend two hours in Simpson Bay, Dutch Sint Maarten. The tour starts in a private tasting room where you try several different types of rum and the guide gives you a brief history of rum + Toppers. Our rum guide was extremely knowledgeable about rum and the Toppers Brand. After the private tasting room you head into the kitchen where they pair 5 different types of rums with different types of food. After the tasting + pairing, you head into the bottling plant where the guide shows you how Toppers ships thousands of bottles a week locally and to the United States. The tour ends with an all you can sample tasting of all the different rum flavours you can buy in a bottle. Our favourites were the "Spicy lime pineapple, salted caramel, chocolate, watermelon, and the spiced rum". After the tour concludes you are given a life-time discount wrist band that you can use at their restaurant for 15% off your bill. The restaurant has a great view of the Lagoon and the Yachts in Cole Bay. Check out their happy hour that runs from 1-6 PM with buy one, get one beers, wines, & rum punch. Check out bordersology.com for our "Ultimate Visitors Guide To Sint Maarten and Saint Martin" where we break-down some of the best restaurants and bars on the island (Toppers is certainly on there).

Oh my goodness, I cannot say enough good things about this tour. Cristina (without an H) was absolutely amazing. I don't really drink liquor and wasn't expecting to get much out of this experience, but she was such a fun and engaging tour guide that it was hard not to have a great time.
The tour was really informative, telling the history of rum and the distillery. We tasted so many different flavors of rum (my favorites were oatmeal cookie and apple pie), cooked and tasted chicken with a specialty rum, tasted rum cake, and saw the bottling process. We even met Mr. Topper himself. After the tour we bought bottles of rum to bring home. Lots of items for sale, not just rum.
The tour is an hour and a half and $33/person. You get a wristband that entitles you to 15% off in the restaurant, which had delicious food and drinks. I got the seafood pasta...so good. Toppers restaurant was the least expensive place we ate while on the island, including drinks and portions big enough for leftovers.
I would recommend this experience again and again!

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. The booking was very easy, and the tour started right on time. Our tour host, Julia, was super knowledgeable and just soooo personable. She had the entire group cracking jokes, smiling and laughing but at the same time giving us super interesting historical info on Rum. I have never sampled that much rum in such a short space of time before :) We also got to eat rum (cake, ice cream, etc). Best experience on the island so far!

Tourist trap!
It was a marketing operation to sell their rum, cigars and so on. We were able to taste all types of rum but there was nothing to see about the distillery process. It's certainly not worth the $30. I recommend going to a shop and buying a $20 bottle or 4 mini bottles at $34 and make your own tasting!!

I went with two acquaintances and it was really top. Cristina immediately got us into the right mood, breaking the ice with a few jokes and asking us a couple of quick questions each (in total there were 22 of us). We tasted about thirty different rums, listened to stories about rum, I was lucky and participated together with Mary from the USA in preparing some chicken with pineapple and spices (she), serving and enjoying chupiti (me) . It was memorable, super recommended!

We booked the Rum Tour via a cruise excursion and it was amazing! Cristina was vibrant and enthusiastic, had us all laughing and enjoying different samples of both rum and rum cakes. The owner even made a small appearance during part of the tour. There is quite an extensive selection of specialty flavours, and of course you can buy whatever you can sample. We definitely walked away with a few souvenir bottles. If you are cruising I would definitely recommend doing this one through the cruise line excursion, as the traffic from the port was quite heavy and you don't want to be stressing about missing the ship on your way back from the distillery, especially if you don't disembark right away. 100% would recommend.

My husband and I enjoyed our time during the Rhum Tour at Topper's. Lots of Rhum to choose from and they let you sample as much as you want. The tour gives you a bracelet that allows you to get 15% off your meal at their restaurant but honestly the tour is better than the food.

This tour was a lot of fun! Carol, our tour guide, was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We tasted about 18 different rhums , had some laughs, and ended our visit with a delicious cup of gelato which they make on site. Their rhum cake is also amazing. Note there is a little shop across the road called the Art Box, where you can purchase a souvenir made by a local artist before you go - we highly recommend you stop in to both places during your stay on the island!

The entire experience from start to finish was AMAZING!!! Carol, the tour guide, was very engaging, knowledgeable, and had great energy. The tour had so much to partake in and you get a discount at their restaurant when you do the tour. Overall, a wonderful experience.

Does anyone know roughly how long a taxi will take from here to the cruise port I Philipsburg? I want to book a tour but am wondering how long it would take to return as the ship leaves at 5pm. Is an hour and a half enough time to get back?
Written November 10, 2024
It really depends on the traffic. It could take you 25 minutes or an hour.

Hello, I will be traveling to St Maarten in April with a party of 5 women and we are interested in reserving the Rhum Distillery tour for 5 but the site will only allow up to 2 people. Can we reserve for up to 5 instead?

Hello!! I am excited to come and visit the island. What are the tour times?
Written July 26, 2020
You can pick tour times from the Toppers Rhum website. Tours are every hour 10am to 3pm, the website will show what is available and what is sold out. It is a very fun time and the people are super nice.
Written July 27, 2020
No - you don't receive a bottle of rum, however you do get to sample a variety of flavors, as well as enjoy a small cup of their homemade rum punch.
Written July 19, 2019
Is the bottle of rum included in the price? Do you have a price for people who just wish to take the tour but not sample the rum (our Designated Driver)?
Written May 30, 2019
Not included, but you would be wise to purchase bottles. You cannot get all of them in the U.S. Plus it is way more expensive. We regret not buying more. Get a cab instead of having a DD.
