- nolanh3320 contributionsWell paced and delicious tour.Went during lunch time and the food we tried was very delicious. There was a real good variety of both food and drink that was appropriate for the time of day, and felt very local and authentic. Our tour guide Gia did a great job and was very knowledgeable and professional. Meal sizes were very well proportioned to leave you full by the end but not so full that you didn't want to try on the last stop. Also got some great recommendations for other spots to try during the rest of our trip.Written May 16, 2024

- GrandTour505842115140 contributionsTop notch food and history tourWe went on the Old San Juan Walk & Taste Tour and were fortunate to have Pablo as our guide. He really earned the name WikiPablo, as he seemed to know everything! This was one of my top experiences in Puerto Rico, and it was a perfect way to get acquainted with San Juan. I didn’t expect to learn so much about history, agriculture, economics, and Taíno culture. And, of course, the food was amazing! My 11-year old is not the most adventurous eater, but he enjoyed almost all the food we sampled. I’d recommend Spoon (and specifically Pablo) to anyone who finds themself in San Juan.Written March 27, 2024
- JNJVandy0 contributionsGreat local food and drink tourWe take private food tours all over the world. We have never had a bad one, and this was one of the better tours. Our guide, Gia was awesome; took care of us, was engaging, funny and informative. The restaurants and bars and food and drinks chosen were excellent picks. We had one dietary concern and that was taken care of at each location. Pace was perfect and we never felt rushed despite running long.Written March 18, 2024

- hbhakh0 contributionsNice tourWe took this tour as an excursion from our cruise ship. Lorna was our guide and she did a very nice job. The tour was just as described on the web site.....a walk through Old San Juan with several stops for local food and drink. All of the restaurants were locally owned and sourced and all of the food was very good. Lorna did a good job of keeping us in the shade on a hot day. We recommend this tour. We did it from the ship because we had onboard credit to use. It is much cheaper to book directly with Spoon Experience.....and it's probably better for them too.Written March 12, 2024

- cjhn080 contributionsExcellent introduction to old town and great local foods! What a great way to see the old town and get introduced to local food! We only had one full day in San Juan and are glad we spent 3.5 hrs of it taking this tour with Lorna as our guide. We learned about the history and modern day life, covered a lot of ground, and had 5 outstanding tastes and 2 good alcoholic drinks (the drinks were different, not sure I would order them again, but good to get outside my comfort zone). The food really was incredibly good, we were pleasantly surprised at the portions and the quality of the food - the best mofongo we had during our week in PR, the best shrimp ceviche we have ever had, and a yummy cuban sandwich among them. And you get a non-alcoholic drink at many of the places as well (watermelon juice, mango frappe...) Well worth the time and money - thank you Lorna!Written February 25, 2024
- jenniferhH3156HN0 contributionsDon't Miss....And Lorna is fantastic! We booked the Craft Cocktails, Authentic Bites and San Juan History: In Partnership with Food and Wine Magazine on our last cruise with Holland America. This was THE BEST excursion we've had. LORNA, I must say again, LORNA, LORNA, LORNA was fantastic. Her love of her city is evident and her knowledge was impressive. She covered history, architecture, life in San Juan, current events, culinary facts and so much more. She easily handled questions on all of these topics. We were expecting tastings, but between four stops, we received three ample main dishes, one virgin drink, two adult beverages (one of which we learned how to make), and a dessert. They also adjusted for a wheat/dairy allergy restriction with no compromise in food quantity or quality. We highly recommend this tour and would give Lorna a 15 on a scale of 10!Written February 14, 2024
- dsl6520 contributionsExcellent guideWe experienced this as a cruise ship tour. Our guide was excellent and she paced the tour around the Old Town perfectly, with stops for food, drink and historical narrative. I wouldn't say the culinary offerings were the most delicious I have tasted, but there was a reasonable variety of nibbles.Written January 27, 2024

What a great way to get to know Old San Juan! The food, culture and history are so rich, but likely something you wouldn't fully appreciate if touring the city on your own. Pablo was AMAZING and it seemed there was not a question he didn't know the answer to. The food was 10/10 and such a neat way to see the city. I was also pleasantly surprised by how much history we were able to cover during our time together - incredibly informative. I would recommend doing this tour early in your trip so you can have a deeper appreciation of San Juan during the rest of your trip.

We chose this tour based on recommendation from hotel concierge. Tour guide Rosio grew up in old San Juan and therefore had inside stories of the area. Her knowledge of historical events and presentation made for a fun informative tour. The food and drink were area related and we did not leave hungry. Carla was a second guide (in training) and was also good. Would definitely recommend.

Did the sunset food and drink tour, which goes to 5 different spots on San Juan. The food and drink selections are amazing (although no mofongo, as advertised), with decent portion sizes.
The reason for the 3 stars is that our guide was notably aloof and uninterested. While she gave the perfunctory explanations at each stop, once her spiel was done, she would literally sit on another table from the group and play with her phone. Same with the walks from one spot to the next - playing on WhatsApp and not talking to anyone.
The tour actually took 2.5 hours instead of the scheduled 3 because, at the very last stop, she simply handed us the ice lolly (on the street), said thanks and walked off. No waiting for people to finish, or even hanging around for questions or tips. I guess she reckoned she was going to get any, and had better places to be.

Hello and thank you for choosing Spoon! We’re thrilled to hear that our carefully curated food and drink selections were amazing :) Our tastings are not fixed and change based on available seasonal ingredients, the day of the week, dietary restrictions, etc. Although you did not taste a ‘traditional’ mofongo, you did have a plantain dish with roasted pork - our creative version of a mofongo!
We are, however, very sorry you felt the guide was uninterested during the experience. Please note that the only points at which our guide used her cell phone (as advised during the introduction) were to communicate with our restaurant & bar partners. She was not “playing” with WhatsApp, but doing her job and communicating effectively with our partners to update the group’s ETA and inform them of last minute changes due to dietary restrictions.
In regards to your claim that the tour ended about 30 minutes earlier, we were able to confirm that this is simply untrue. The tour finished about 6 minutes under 3 hours- which is acceptable since the tour description explicitly states that this experience is 'approximately' 3 hours.
Thank you for supporting small business and enjoy the rest of your summer!

We really loved Pablo, our guide. He seemed to know something about every topic we asked about. He brought the menu, old San Juan, and Puerto Rico to life. We learned about the culture, the history, the cuisine, and more. We loved Pablo, like the food, and tolerated the bars (we don't drink). Our daughter has a gluten allergy, and both Pablo and the restaurant partners were really careful to honor this need. Wish we had done the tour earlier in our stay in Puerto Rico, as we had already sampled a lot of local cuisine. But we're still glad we went because the experience was top notch. Highly recommend!

Our guide was great. Very passionate about her neighborhood and full of knowledge on local food and history. The one star in not meant to reflect on her but we definitely expected a lot more for $150. $450 for 3 of us (plus tip). We had a sip of coffee (seriously a sip), a piece of a pork sandwich, then a small plate of pork with rice and beans, a small sample of cevich 2 cocktails and a very small “beermosa”. And a popsicle for dessert. Yes, a popsicle. We had our 14 year old with us who obviously didn’t drink but paid the same price. Everything we tasted was very good just fell way short of our expectations.
Would’ve rather done a separate walking tour and spent $500 on a couple nice meals.

We at Spoon strive to deliver the best experience possible, pride ourselves on excellent customer service and stand by the value our experiences represent. That being said, I am sorry to hear you found our experience to be costly and are shocked that you felt compelled to leave a damaging one star review. Please allow us to elaborate on our pricing in more detail.
As I am sure you experienced, our tours are very well-rounded as they include a wealth of information provided by an expert guide (topics such as history, architecture, culture, modern day politics, art and gastronomy), priority access to some of the most treasured local spots in Old Town, and, in addition, delicious tastings & cocktails. Having said this, the value of our tours is not solely set on the physical offerings. The price you paid is not only for the tastings but for the experience itself. It includes the food, drinks, guide, tips to restaurants, taxes, admin costs and fees, the information it took us years to compile and all the other fees related to running a business (rent, bookkeeping/accounting, marketing etc). All these are factored in when setting a price for an experience. It’s also important to note that the pandemic has caused food and beverage (as well as overall operating) costs to sky-rocket and all our partners have therefore needed to adjust their costs. Did you know that we pay more in electricity than any other state in the continental US?
Nevertheless, we are glad you decided to visit our Island and hope the rest of your trip was magical. Please know that by purchasing our tour you directly impacted all the local businesses you visited and for that we are all grateful.
We tried to find your booking and contact info but had no luck. If you get a chance, please reach out to us directly. We take all feedback seriously and we’d love to chat further about this.
Best,
The Spoon Team

My husband and I did the Sunset Walk & Taste Tour. We chose Spoon since they offered 2 cocktails, a small group size, and a lower price. They were incredibly responsive when we had a question, which we greatly appreciated. Our guide, Elliott, was fabulous. He was knowledgeable and did a great job of leading our group of 12 through the busy streets of Old Town. The tour included a decent amount of history, which I enjoyed.
Our first stop was in a fancy hotel. We had watermelon mojitos and ceviche. Naturally, I enjoyed my mojito since it’s one of my favorite drinks. I was surprised how much I liked the ceviche since I usually don’t like raw fish.
Our second stop was a causal restaurant where my husband and I had actually eaten at a few days earlier. We weren’t disappointed since we enjoyed the restaurant so much the first time around. We had croquettes and frozen hot chocolate, which were just as yummy as we remembered.
Our third stop was a bar on Calle de San Sebastián. We tried beer-mimosas that paired well with our cubanos. The cubano was my favorite dish of the night!
Our fourth stop was an intimate restaurant in a historical landmark. We tried a variation of mofongo and had coffee flan for dessert. Both were cooked well, but were not my taste
This tour is a good value with quality food that won’t leave you hungry. I’d recommend going on one of the first days you visit in order to orient yourself to Old Town San Juan!

We toured on warm and sunny Friday with Lorna and had an amazing time. All of the foods we tried were delicious and I appreciated the background and history that she provided as we walked through the city. Lorna gave great recommendations on the best sites and museums as well as restaurant and bar advice. We did a lot of walking but I never felt rushed, it was a great way to get your bearings around Old Town.

My husband and I had a great time on this tour. Our tour guide, Christina, was very knowledgeable about the history of the city and the food we were eating. She gave great recommendations and genuinely seems to love her job!
We stopped at 3 restaurants, a coffee shop and a popsicle place. All the food was good, but I do wish there was a little more variety to what we tried. All the cocktails were delicious!

We had such a great time on our Old San Juan walking food tour. The tour was very well plotted out. The restaurant choices were awesome. The food even better. Our tour guide Monica added lots of historical, and culinary nuggets along the way. What was most enjoyable was Monica made the tour feel as though a good friend was showing the city, and culture, she is so proud to be a part of. I recommend everyone take this tour.

Lorna was a fantastic guide! She shared a lot about the history of Puerto Rico and how the food is influenced by the culture. We visited 4 local restaurants (T.tuan, El Viejo Almacen, Santismo, and ChocoCortes) and enjoyed a dish and specialty beverage at each stop for a total of 3 hours. If you are staying in the area for a few days, I recommend to do this tour at the beginning of your stay so you can go back to visit locations again.

What food items are served? My husband is diabetic and can’t have sugar added or alcohol, I’m wondering if there are no sugar added options for desserts. Thanks so much :)
Written August 15, 2023
I participated in February and there were no desserts served at tastings except the last stop which was just dessert, a refreshing frozen fruit bar.
As far as alcohol, the tour I took included a cocktail with each tasting. Water was also available, but cocktails were paired with tasting menu per each restaurant stop.

How are you providing COVID protection during the tasting members of the group from different parties.? Are the tastings all outdoors? I
Written September 2, 2022
The tastings at restaurants were indoors, but tables were spaced 3 feet apart in most places. The coffee stop was quite crowded and no spacing. Much of the time is spent walking outside though, and restaurants serve immediately which limits the time spent indoors in one place.

I can’t seem to locate the times for the tour(s). I see comments about 10am and 4pm. I was wondering if there are more options. My son and I land at SJU at 3:15. Hoping there’s is a 5-6 pm tour. Would love to start our trip with this tour! I’m sure we’ll be hungry :)

Are the food tastings different depending on your time slot? For example the 10am slot vs 4pm slot. My family was hoping to try a variety

That's a good question. I'm not sure about that we had ceviche, chicken and mofango, ginger beer, thick Cuban sandwich, passion fruit mojito, some other chicken sausage fried roll with beans or something cant quite remember and a popsicle. Hope that helps with your decision.
