About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- marionsJ1266BU0 contributionsGGood chance to see some of the island and some rum tasting! This was a great wee trip which also lets you see a bit of the Island. We were picked up in a lovelu air-conditined mini-bus and there werecbottles of water available in a cooler. Our driver/guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. We visited Hunte's Gardens first. These are really beutiful gardens with the tallest palm trees I have ever seen! You walk down several levels and there are lots of wee seating areas you can sit at. Very tropical place! We then stopped for a nice lunch at Bathseba. Different landscape here due to being on Atlantic side Staff here were lovely and some stalls with local goods for sale. Then off to St Nicholas Abbey. There isca steam train journey you can do here but it was not on due to it being fixed but we knew about this beforehand. Wee rum tasting first. You can purchase rum there which is in beautifully decorated glass bottle. You can get your name or messages engravedcon the bottle which would make a lovely gift. A tour of the house - downstairs only as the house is so old the upstairs is becoming hazardous to walk on. Tour of the distillery and then tour of where they bottle up the rum. One of the owners was there that day and told us they had distilled gin during COVID and nowvsell gin! Beautiful grounds round the house. Well worth a visit if you are interested in rum and history! Thanks to the driver/guide on the day (Mark) and his buddy. Looked after us very well!Written October 4, 2024
- lilysP9418EY0 contributionsFailure to accurately represent historyWhile the tour guide noted the importance of preserving history, they presented an entirely warped one. Walking through the beautiful grounds and exploring the house you could be mistaken for thinking this was merely an exciting 350 year old business, owned by quirky families who had a passion for rum and romance and not in fact the site of one of the worst crimes in human history. The site is presented as a centre for human ingenuity and business success, while the thousands of enslaved people that suffered and died there get a two line mention in the brochure and a small section in the museum which is unexplained. While I can have some sympathy for wanting to create an experience for tourists centred on the new rum business their failure to give any context to the history of enslavement was shocking. Particularly frightening was the favourable light in which enslavers were portrayed. I would also note there is a parrot kept in a cage which is clearly suffering as he has lost a large amount of feathers - a common sign of mental distress. The staff are friendly and helpful but if you’re looking for an accurate portrayal of history, one not centred on the oppressors, this isn’t for you.Written September 27, 2024
- 625janicea0 contributionsHistoric plantation tourA very beautiful building and grounds with a significant history on the island. Lovely meeting the family and hearing about the history of the rum distillery. We were given the tour by Virginia who was greatly knowledgeable and lovely in her presentation. We ate in the cafe and had a very charming waiter and nice food accompanied by a tasty rum punch. Would definitely recommend a visit.Written September 18, 2024
- Stay610743239910 contributionsGreat value! This was awesome! We booked this through our resort. We got a great tour of the island and a cool little train ride up to the top of Cherry Hill. The view was amazing. In terms of the distillery, this was very cool to see. The tour of the house and process was very cool. We bought a bottle to go!Written September 15, 2024
- Tigersouthernbabe0 contributionsHistorical House, Grounds, Train….and Rum. What more could you ask for 😁Very interesting history, lovely location and the train journey was short but sweet! Great views at Cherry Tree Hill - no cherry trees though!!! If you want to know why then go and visit 😄 you can help turn the steam engine round and then access the engine platform to sound the whistle ….don’t forget to say hello to the chatty parrots-they’re very funny The historical house is beautifully maintained with some very beautiful and interesting antiques and collectibles - very much worth visiting The distillery is interesting and the tasting delicious… The surrounding gardens and grounds are quite magnificent… there is a cafe which serves lovely food which, when seated feels like you are high in a rain forest We visited on a Sunday in time for the 11:30 train. Thoroughly enjoyed our time thereWritten September 5, 2024
- tired-bus-raveller0 contributionsA plantation house that doesn’t recognise enslaved people during the tour…..The steam train was expensive for such a short journey but a very beautiful view at the top. Very pleasant. The guides for both the train and the house were extremely nice. Disappointing that the whole of the first floor of the house was not accessible to the public. Distillery was informative and tasting was a bit rushed. However the real inexcusable part of this visit was how tone-deaf the place is to its real history. Not one mention of the enslaved people during the tour. Nothing! Like they didn’t exist. The pamphlet you are given at the beginning says ‘we have displayed within our house museum some of the records and artefacts of the enslaved……’ Not one word mentioned during the tour of this, not one acknowledgment of their contribution. Like it’s been erased from history. Please do betterWritten September 2, 2024
- The_Traveling_Expat0 contributionsInteresting Insight into Plantation LifeThe house is very well-maintained by the current owner, and the guide was excellent and super informative about the house's history and the rum distillation process. The owner's son, who runs the rum tasting, is very friendly and personable and takes an interest in learning more about each visitor.Written August 31, 2024
- 537julietm0 contributionsA bit too expensive but we enjoyed itThe guide was very knowledgeable and experienced. It was a lovely day out where they showed us how the rum was made and the small quantities that they make there. This was very interesting, However it was an expensive journey by taxi and there and back. There wasn’t really any other way of getting there comfortably. The tickets were too expensive for the event but it was very enjoyable and I would have been happier with more rum samples for the cost.Written August 22, 2024
- rebeccacF997VN0 contributionsStunning house, great history and lovely views from cherry Hill.Lovely historic house and grounds.. 1 of only 3 surviving houses in it's class.. 2 here on barbados (the other is privately owned) & 1 in the united states. Great staff, very informative and friendly. Check out times of train ride etc ahead of going and plan to get there for that or you'll have lots of waiting around like we did. They only run guided talks of the house to coincide with the end of the train ride so we had to wait ages as we'd literally just missed the train. You can do the house on your own but would miss most of the history which was important to us. It would be better if they ran guided tours more frequently. Train ride isn't very long but it's fab and takes you to cherry tree reserve with lovely views. You can help "turn the train" at the top and if you are really lucky may be able to ride back in the engine on the train footplate. They let you pull the whistle and take pics on the engine, which is a lovely touch. There is rum tasting and if you go in sugar crop season then you'll see the mill working grinding the sugar cane. It's pretty pricey - probably the most expensive thing we did, but I'd still deffo recommend it.Written August 16, 2024
- jamilal9330 contributionsBeautiful preservation of historyThis was an amazing tour. My first ever train ride and my husband assisted to turn the train. The view at cherry hill was spectacular. To learn about how my people worked on the plantatin and see the beautiful history up close a d person was amazing. The rum tasting was a plus.Written August 6, 2024
- 772rebeccan0 contributionsWorth the tripBeautiful setting and great history tour . Lunch at the cafe was a perfect way to end the day. Thought the rail tour would have been a bit longer, but it was different. Tour guides were very knowledgeable and engaging.Written July 22, 2024
- Happiness484057375230 contributionsVisit to One of Barbados oldest Great HousesThe history of Abby is the history of Barbados as a country. You will learn about the architecture of the 1500s, which was Jacobean. Tonia, our Tour guide, was awesome and very knowledgeable about the history of Abby and the surrounding areas.Written July 12, 2024
- H5152PVrobertd0 contributionsBeautiful historic houseI visited St. Nicholas Abbey, an old plantation house built in 1658 and one of three examples of Jacobean architecture still surviving today in the Western Hemisphere. My visit began with a house tour. I loved the shell chandelier in the drawing room. The plantation's new owner established a distillery here. They produce a boutique rum. After the tour, they gave us a sample to taste. Also on the property is the St. Nicholas Heritage Railway. I did not have time to ride it, but I was able to take a photo of the train.Written June 30, 2024
- 548scottg0 contributionsGreat way to spend a morning in BarbadosThe staff is friendly and one of the proprietors was there to greet us and chat at the rum tasting portion. The train ride is great -- comfortable, clean and fun. It's relaxing, with a stop for picture taking at terrific view (and some souvenir sellers who are not pushy). You can get a picture of yourself blowing the train's whistle. Good guides on the train and at the "abbey" (a plantation house, not a religious building). You can see the first floor and the rum distillery area. There are some birds to see as well. There's a super film from c. 1935 taken by a previous owner and then the rum tasting -- lovely!Written June 24, 2024
- Virbenia0 contributionsSecond visit to the AbbeyMy partner and I visited this week, making it our second visit in a few years. We were lucky to be the only two on a tour led by Meghan which made it extra special. Meghan was knowledgeable, funny, and patient with all of our questions. We seem to remember our first visit a few years ago included the house tour and train for one fee but this time, the tour was a separate fee from the train. As such, we chose not to ride the train again. With that said, we learned they aim to extend the tracks by the end of this year which will treat guests to a 40 minutes ride. We look forward to this on our next visit. Last but not least, don't forget to say hello to Baby and bow to Max. 🤗Written June 18, 2024

The steam railway takes you through field and woods and stops at Cherry Tree Hill to have some great views over the coastline. Here there is also the turntable which you may help turn the engine for the return journey.
The Great 17th century house has been well restored and one of the oldest on Barbados. A knowledgeable guide will take you around the mansion and then to see the rum making process before being able to taste some samples and purchase some souvenirs.
A lovely way to spend a few hours and learn some interesting facts.

If you're looking for a break from the beautiful Barbados beaches then we can definitely recommend a visit to St Nicholas Abbey. Easy to find, (use Google maps), from the moment you arrive & are greeted at the gate, you know you are in for a quality experience. The facilities, cafe, gift shops and parking were all well organised. The staff welcome you to 'board the train' and it's such a beautifully restored and narrated experience from the team on-board. We won't provide many spoilers, but it's topped off with a fabulous view from the top of Cherry Tree Hill, which was somewhere on our visit list too! Then you get to visit the wonderful plantation house, with again a fabulous guided tour at no extra cost if you wish. Then the real highlight of the day for me, we got to sample some of the amazing Rums they make in the distillery. We were lucky enough to meet Simon and spend some time in his delightful company before having a bottle of Rum engraved to remind us of the best visit we had whilst visiting the island. Definitely should be top of your visit list when you next head to Barbados!

The ride itself (though short) was okay and the guys were friendly and knowledgeable.
HOWEVER,
I went to the shop after and decided to buy marmalade for my brother ($18). Though it is not legal to force someone to spend a minimum amount to use a debit/credit card, I was not allowed to swipe my card to make this purchase. I was told I had to spend $20 to meet their minimum requirement. I told the cashier that it is not legal to force me to pay any particular amount but she insisted saying the managers/owners have that rule. Had I not made a promise to purchase it, I'd have left it.
I then contacted St Nicholas Abbey directly about it via Facebook and though the message was read, I got no response and that was over 6 weeks ago.

We arrived at 11:05, unfortunately missing the 11:00 AM train. Not a big deal, we went to the wildlife reserve just down the road. We came back for the 1:00 pm train to be told that they weren’t running it despite having a posted time of 1:00pm. They would run it at 2:30pm. Which wasn’t any of the posted times. I’d give it a better review as our children were super excited about going on the train but didn’t get to. If you run something devoted to the tourism industry and your schedule is on a sign and online and plans are made to attend... it really isn’t cool to cancel.

Thank you for posting this comment. Unfortunately this last few weeks with the virus scare on island and diminishing visitors to our attraction, we have tried to at least offer a reduced schedule depending on demand. Normally the train goes out exactly on time for each scheduled ride. As a family we have been adamant at punctuality on the railway, because one thing we Barbadians are not great at is punctuality!! But these are different times, and whilst we would normally have our rides full with visitors at this time of year, it has now been diminished to the odd walk-in, with the railway now forced to be closed from Monday, 23rd March unfortunately. We do apologize for the disappointment to the children and hope you keep safe and healthy against the virus.

We took the combined Railway / Great House tour and we thought the railway trip was very interesting. The engine driver gave a history of the railway on the island which was very entertaining. The Great House guided tour was quite interesting although restricted to downstairs only. We enjoyed the black and white film taken by a previous owner in 1937 which had footage around the island and from the sea voyage to Barbados from England. However we were a bit disappointed with the rum tasting - only one glass of 5 year rum and about 1mm of rum in the glass, just enough to wet your lips with. We would definately recommend the Railway tour as we thought this good value.

We arrived at the gate, paid on the card but was told it hadn’t gone through, so did it again (found out later it had gone through so paid twice). Went on the train which was lovely (didn’t like being ambushed at the end by local sellers when we just wanted to see the view). There was also a poor monkey with rope tied round its middle being passed around for pictures (very sad). Returned by train via the house but was only shown 2 rooms (couldn’t go upstairs either), then walked over to the tasting room where you were given a glass of fumes (no liquid in it), the guide then pointed us to the shop and left. The entire thing lasted just over an hour (we stayed longer looking at the garden). Very expensive for very little and the rum being sold (which you don’t taste) is very expensive!!

Great new attraction in Barbados. Everything has been designed and built with a lot of attention to detail. The staff are some of the friendliest you will find in Barbados. This was my fourth ride since it opened less than a year ago and the vegetation along the track and the informative talks by the staff are getting better every time. This is a must-do attraction for locals and visitors alike.

Gosh Ralf thanks for riding the Heritage Railway for the fourth time!! You will then also be happy to hear we have a second Heritage steam locomotive enroute from the UK and plans in the future for an expansion of the track with a heritage wooden bridge over the road and to run along the cliff edge south to enjoy those fantastic views of the wild Atlantic Coast.

A lovely place to go away from the beaches. There is a small steam railway - but do not expect anything grand, and it does not go very far but it is different. The main building is mainly a shop and restaurant both of which we visited, and it is an easy stroll round the grounds. The owner was there and explained about the history of the place, and tempted us with some rum - which was delicious. The lunch was good - although the service was slow but a lot of people arrived at the same time and nothing is done in a hurry in th heat. I would recommend this as a visit for anyone visiting the island.

We made our third visit to St Nicholas Abbey in November and were delighted with the new steam train attraction now in operation, the experience is thrilling and the installation very well done. After the train experience lunch at the Abby itself is always a treat however I would note that as we have already done the Abbey experience before and only really want to enjoy lunch on their magnificent patio we find it troubling that we still have to pay the full entrance fee to the Abbey for the privilege of buying lunch from them.
Perhaps you could work on that detail please.
Additionally it would add to the experience if you could run the steam cane mill once a week during the off season.
Always a great day out, hope the feedback is helpful.

Please be aware that if you are taking the train trip ONLY the policy is against using the restaurant. We were very disappointed that no immediate access was available to even a drink of water and we were not allowed to step in the direction of the restaurant. We thought this was VERY POOR so please don't be caught out like we were. We enjoyed the train trip.

Is it possible to book it on a cruise? How close to the cruise ship terminal? We have 7 adults, 5 children and 2 infant age. Also, how do we go about booking the combo of the Great House Tour and Distillery? I didn’t see it as an option.
Written August 11, 2019
It is probably a good hours drive from the cruise terminal in Bridgetown. We booked the combo through Viator, only place I was able to find that offered all 3, hope this helps.
