Friendliest People You Could ever Meet
Had a wonderful stay at a VRBO, 6 weeks in a Villa with a private pool and situated on a cliff overlooking the ocean on the southeast side of the island. We were 15 minute drive east of the airport. One key word is expensive : food, golf, fuel. Despite these issues, climate was ideal, 30C during the day, 26 C at night. Despite the adjustment to driving on the left, Barbados has some of the worst roads I’ve ever driven on. Oistins fish fry on Friday evenings is a must see. We also had enjoyable trips to Brightons Farmer Market ( Saturday mornings…go early and enjoy breakfast and fresh produce shopping), Huntes Gardens, and you don’t want to miss Harrison’s Cave. The Four Square Rum factory tour and tasting is a must in Barbados. The hospitality and friendliness of the locals made us feel at home. You will especially notice this driving. Cost YouLess was our go to grocery place although they didn’t always have everything you might be looking for.

      Cultural history tour
Kezia was an incredibly knowledgeable and personable guide! We had a wonderful time touring the historic areas of the city, learned a lot about its history and local culture, and enjoyed sampling local street foods.

      Not the typical tourist experience
I'm not sure what I expected, but we enjoyed this unique, non-touristy sightseeing and food tasting walk through Bridgetown. Nicola is chatty and fun, and she can answer questions about anything! The "hole-in-the-wall" first stop was interesting, although I'm not sure I'm crazy about souse. The second stop was tasty, but in a generic air-conditioned restaurant. We all enjoyed the final stop with chicken necks, mavi and more that was new to us, at the oldest bar in the city. We enjoyed viewing the architecture, old synagogue and cemetery, Parliament buildings and more.

Fantastic tour and Nicola was the best!
Nicola was our guide and she was fantastic. Met us as scheduled and then we spent about four hours walking through Bridgetown, Barbados, stopping at four places to eat. Nicola discussed history, architecture and most importantly the food we were going to eat. There was a good variety of places we stopped as well as the types of foods we sampled. One of the best tours we have taken in the Caribbean. If you are in Barbados, definitely try them!

      Great tour
Nicola was our guide and gave us some some history of Bridgetown, Barbados and most importantly the food we were going to eat and then ate. Good variety of venues visited (4 in all) including everything from a rum shop (for food) to a nice restaurant on the water. Good variety of food also including some of the best Bajan dishes. Highly recommended.

You never know what your eating
Had a great tour with Nicola, the Hunters bar was amazing where we had all manner of traditional food. Got to say glad I did not know what it was before trying. However it was good fun, Nicola was very relaxed and easy to talk to and very knowledgable on the local history. We are going to have a try at making "Conkies". Would recommend this tour to anyone you will see places you would not find on your own.

Lick De Bowl was a great foodie experience
How many times have you said, 'I wish I could meet regular people away from the tourist mob'. Lick De Bowl is just that tour. We were escorted by taxi to our host's home where she introduced a trained, culinary chef. Chef Jerome is a natural teacher; soft spoken, patient, well organized and fun to speak with. We assisted with the preparation of lunch as we shared stories. A pleasant day with friends.

      Off the beaten path
On our food tour we had 4 stops. These stops were all local establishments. We even went to the oldest bar in Bridgetown. We walked down Swan Street were the locals shop. Our first stop was Hunters Bar where we sampled cutters. We had the choice of ham or fish. Cutters is a local dish. Our second stop was Square restaurant we sat at the table. We sampled black pudding and souse. Black pudding is made of sweet pudding, cloves, spice and scotch bonett pepper. Souse is pork with shredded cucumber, bell pepper, onion, parsley, lemon and salt to taste. The third stop was at the oldest bar. The choice at this bar was beer or homemade mauby.. Banks is the traditional beer. Mauby has a bitter after taste. To make mauby you boil bark, stick spice then add water and sugar. The last stop was Bridge house we had Mauby made from syrup, fish cakes, plantain, salad and bake(pancake) The service at the Bridge House was very slow we waited a long time for our food. Nicola was my tour guide she talked about history, cooking and rum. She was informative. We walked to the old library.

      Awesome Barbados Tour
My sister and I enjoyed the Bridgetown Food & Heritage Tour, and met up with our tour guide in Jubilee Gardens and found that the tour was in essence a private tour, as it was just us and our guide. Our time in Barbados was very much enjoyed, made that way by our tour guide's high energy that drew us into learning the history of Barbados, as well as sampling food and drink. If we ever find ourselves in Barbados again we'll be sure and sign up for another tour through Lick De Bowl Food Tours.

      Great Guide but Disappointing Food
We booked this tour based on others reviews but our experience was not so great. Our guide was very nice and knowledgeable, but the food was nothing like the pretty picture you see here. First, it was all fried, and it appeared to be pretty much flying fish in the places we visited. It's been several months now since our visit there and I can't recall the details of what we ate but it was disappointing. The last stop - the Marina Bar & Restaurant - was completely unprepared for us. We waited an hour for the food, but it never arrived. I think everyone left. Would not recommend this tour.

      Fun in out-of-the-tourist-crowds places
We had a ball. Our guide was great and we had bites and full servings in 6 or so places along with history and stories.

Georgetown Food Tour - good food, mostly
We enjoyed this tour until the end, when the last restaurant we stopped at did not have the ingredients for the dish we were to have. They sent out for the ingredients but when after an hour we were still waiting, we left, our time was more valuable than the food. Also, the tour guide left us at the beginning of that hour. If the tour guide was required to stay until all food had been served, maybe this would be less likely to happen. Otherwise our guide was pleasant and knowledgeable and we had a good time.

The class was ok. Chef very personable. Problem was the menu. We were not told in advance what it was so was surprised that it consisted of hot pigtail soup ( it was steaming in Barbados at the time) and cod fritters. It would have been nice to choose from a menu of options in advance. We learned to make authentic rum punch which was enjoyable. Another problem is it was held in a person’s home and air conditioner wasn’t on. Portable fans provided but it only helped a little. Lastly we were promised recipes as follow up but not received. It’s a good idea in principle but needs more work. Cost of $250 a couple not really worth it. Wouldn’t recommend until some of the kinks worked out

Good day Brenda Truly sorry that you did not thoroughly enjoy the class. The recipes were sent to your email address but are probably in your spam email. We will forward again. We have noted your recommendation that guests be given menu option beforehand and this has been done. Thanks for your feedback.

We had such a fun time cooking with Danica today. We started off making authentic rum punch, and put it in the freezer to chill. Then we prepared a pone with cassaba and coconut and popped it into the oven to bake. Next was flying fish and cou cou, using delicious herbs and other ingredients to make a marinade and sauce. Plus a pickle side dish! Danica was an excellent teacher and was also great in assigning tasks to each of us. We had lunch together, drank our chilled rum punch, then finished off the meal with our “fresh out of the oven” pone. It was a completely different dessert than any of us had ever tasted — it was so good!

Thank you Kareen and Danica for an excellent experience.

Excellent tour to Karen’s house for a cooking class with Danica. We prepared a rum punch, then made fish cakes followed by roiled flying fish cou cou (similar to polenta) with sauce

This was a REALLY great experience and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Barbados!

Kareen and Jerone were amazing hosts and thought us to cook the national dish but above all, they immediately made us feel welcomed and comfortable - you could tell they had a passion for giving us the best experience possible.

They possess a lot of knowledge about Barbados and food in general, so we learnt a lot to be honest and will definitely be back during our next visit!!

    Thanks,
    M & NdS

Thoroughly recommended if you want a authentic Bajan cooking class. Cooked a very special starter using Blowfish followed by a main course Salted Cod and Cou Cou. Lots of cooking tips and cultural context delivered in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Well worth the trip.
