    South Kaibab Trail
    Stop: 7 hours
The South Kaibab Trail is a must-hike trail in Grand Canyon National Park. It was blasted out of the Canyon's sheer walls by the National Park Service in the 1920s, and today offers a dramatic journey to amazing features like Ooh Aah Point, Cedar Ridge and Skeleton Point. On this tour our goal, which is not guaranteed as each group is unique, is Skeleton Point, where we will enjoy a picnic lunch looking down onto the Colorado River and Phantom Ranch far below us. The hike back is arduous, so be ready for a quick descent and a longer return!

Our guided hike on the South Kaibob Trail was worth every penny. Jeff, our guide, reached out a week before our hike to introduce himself and ask about our interests. The day previous to our hike he reached out again to advise us of changing weather and provide a short list of places where we could pick up extra gear if needed. He arrived prepared for our hike with footgear for icy patches, which we greatly appreciated. During our walk he answered many questions and was knowledgeable about the geology, flora, and wildlife of the Canyon. He was also sensitive to our walking pace and skill level. This was a superb experience. I would recommend Wildland Trekking to anyone.

My family of 5, of varying ages and abilities, hiked into the Grand Canyon on the South Kaibab Trail with Josh on March 2. We’ve been talking about Josh ever since! He made all of us comfortable on the trail, provided an education about the geology, history, and animal and plant life in the canyon, answered all of our (many) questions, and gave us a great lunch back up in the sun on the South Rim. I would highly recommend Josh for anything from a day hike to a multi-day backpacking excursion. We’ll be talking about our day with Josh for years to come.

Unless you are an experienced hiker or have experience in the Grand Canyon, I would recommend hiring an experienced guide. I can't recommend Wildlandtrekking and our guide Steve Klefstad enough. Steve's expertise and knowledge made our trip a wonderful experience. As a family of 5 that has done some hiking, but never at the Grand Canyon, we felt a guide would be the right way to go and make us more comfortable. The entire pre-trip process was fantastic. Steve shared great planning advice on how to prepare for the trip. Proper gear, water and layers of clothes as the temperature varies as you descend and climb. The day of our hike, Steve was early and prepared. We had a quick review of gear, safety and best practices. Then we got underway. All along the way, Steve shared tons of knowledge of the canyon, geology, wildlife and history. He went at our pace and provided lots of time to stop and admire the views and sites! If you are visiting the Grand Canyon and want an expert to guide you through the trails and fill you with knowledge of the magical canyon, then Wildland and Steve is your choice!!!

We did a group hike with Jason Bull on the South Kaibab trail. He was an excellent tour guide - he brought us all of the equipment we needed as well as lunch and snacks. He encouraged us to challenge ourselves while also being realistic. He made sure everyone was 100% sure they wanted to go to the furthest point before moving forward, and paid close attention to how we were doing on the hike. I would strongly recommend that anyone visiting the Grand Canyon take a hike with Jason/Wildland Trekking!

My brother and I had a terrific guide, Josh, for our hike. He was extremely knowledgable about the Canyon and very encouraging and patient with me especially, this being my first experience with this type of hiking. He was also completely prepared with everything we needed including all equipment, coffee, snacks and a healthy lunch following the hike. Everything I eat in my normal diet! His comment stating that "not many youngsters could do what I did" on that day really spoke volumes and I repeat that to everyone that I talk to about our great experience. Thanks, Josh!

I was unsure if we really needed a guide for a day hike in the Canyon. I am so grateful that we chose this company! They exceeded our expectations from start to finish. The people I spoke with on the phone while making my reservation were extremely helpful and answered all of my questions to help me pick the best experience for my daughter and myself. I can't say enough about our guide Michael. He did a great job of watching out for our safety during an extremely hot hike. The temperature was over 115 degrees. He made sure we were safe but that we got to experience all that we wanted to. He was knowledgeable and passionate about the Grand Canyon. He pointed out so many things that we would have missed if we weren't with him. He made a wonderful picnic lunch for us, carried all the safety equipment we could have needed and was just a pleasure to be with. He knew all of the rangers we passed and we could tell that he and Wildland Trekking were very respected.

We found this tour on Trip Advisor and decided to book after reading so many great reviews. Most people who come to the Gand Canyon just park their car and look over the edge into the canyon. Our party of six wanted more! We settled on a moderately intense hiking tour (as described by the site). A few days prior to our adventure we were emailed by our amazing guide, Shayne, who told us what to expect and how to reach him, etc. On the day of our tour it was about 30 degrees with 30 mph winds at the top of the canyon. We dressed in layers, which I highly recommend if visiting in the winter months.
Shayne met us at the meeting spot and issued us poles, backpacks and “crampons” (spikes) for our shoes. We then boarded the Canyon shuttle bus and within minutes were in South Kaibab Trail. The top was icy and the trails are only about 4 feet wide. Do not attempt as a beginner (as we were)without crampons.
The views were spectacular and Shayne went at a pace that was comfortable for our group. We had some fit people in our group and some not so fit. He made it fun for all. (The park limits each tour to no more than 7 people so you are guaranteed personal attention.) We hiked for 2 miles and stopped for a great lunch of hearty chicken soup and cookies prepared by Shayne. He also took our photos whenever asked. At times the trail is intense with a 18-30 degree incline so if you are not up for a physical challenge, this may not be the trail for you.
He would have taken us as far as we wanted but we were mindful that we had to walk back uphill at the end so we settled for 2 miles each way. The top of Canyon is much colder in winter than the bottom of the canyon. As you go down you will begin shedding layers of clothes. On the way up, you’ll be putting them back on. Be sure to bring a winter hat and mittens also, as well as water! You will be very happy if you book this tour with Shayne. This is something we will remember forever!

Jason C. from wildland trekking was a great guide. He provided everything we needed and made us feel extremely comfortable hiking. The snacks were great and the meal after was great too. We learned so much from the guide that we proceeded to do another hike afterwards on our own. This guide is well worth!

If you have good shoes and some experience with hiking, you can easily do the South Kaibab to Skeleton point on your own. But doing it with the Wildland Trekking Company makes it even more special! Everything was perfectly organised, with very good communication ahead of time. They provided poles, backpacks, traction devices and all the lunch. Our guide Louie was very attentive to our pace and security, and gave a lot of information on the history, geology and wildlife of the Grand Canyon. We learned a lot and it was great entertainment while walking. The trail itself is not difficult but it is a 5 to 6 hour hike. Take your time, breathe and admire the scenery. It is definitely worth the effort and doing it with Wildland make it even more enjoyable. Highly recommended.

What a SPECTACULAR first experience at the Grand Canyon! Our guide, Moshe, patiently led us to the Ooh Aah view point describing the changing geology of the canyon walls along the way. There we had magnificent views of the canyon as the winter storm came in. Moshe then coached this out of shape Texan back up to the rim as the snow accumulated. It could not have been a better adventure!
