    Train To Anchorage
The view was gorgeous. The tour director was knowledgeable and fun to listen to. We saw 3 bears, eagles, beluga whales in the distance, glaciers, lakes, rivers. Recommend to sit mid car or end. By the time they saw the wildlife if you sat in the front your viewing was minimal. We sat in the back and had long sight time. Train ride was 4 hours long

    Loved It!
Lovely train ride with exceptional staff! Even though we had rain off and on we still saw lots of beaver dams, swans, a few moose, salmon running and DENALI! But as exceptional as the views were the staff was amazing.

The Wilderness Express was an awesome experience. The design and operation of the dome cars provided for outstanding viewing of the landscape while traveling. The dining room food was quite tasty and the staff was friendly and very organized. I highly recommend Wilderness Express as it is a higher level of comfort and service than alternative train services available.

    Travel via train 👍👍
The trip to Alaska was a bucket list item for me. My husband’s only request was that a portion had to be via train. Round trip/same day anchorage to Seward. Train travel was quite nice; bear, moose, eagles….what else could we ask for. We upgraded to gold on the return; probably would have enjoyed it more if we haven’t slept the whole trip back to Anchorage! 😁

    Fantastic, best train ride ever.
The seats reclined and were fantastic with plenty of leg room. Wish airlines were as accommodating. Ride was smooth and bathrooms were almost spacious. This was a luxurious trip, on time and efficient.

Goldstar service was poor value and overall experience disappointed
Disappointing experience. View from the train was largely obscured by trees on both side of the track. The commentary on the train from Anchorage to Talkeetna was very poor - better on the return journey from Talkeetna to Anchorage. Breakfast from Anchorage to Talkeetna was very poor - cold by the time we were served and choice was poor. No healthy options offered which was very disappointing. Food was so poor we didn't risk the dinner on the return leg. Goldstar service was definitely not worth the extra money - poor value- given the premium price paid

    Wonderful ride with majestic views
First time to Alaska and it was recommended to take this trip from Seward to Anchorage, what an amazing trip full of views. We were even able to see a Bald Eagle nested in a tree AND a black bear climbing up the side of a mountain - what a bonus. The view of the glaciers and landscape were amazing. My mom uses a walker and there was an elevator to enable her to get to the 2nd floor to the GoldStar car. We had a nice meal in the dining car and the service overall was very good. Highly recommend this trip.

    Scenic Train Ride from Anchorage
This was a beautiful travel adventure on the train. So many scenic pictures & unbelievable close ups on glaciers. The staff on the train were friendly. courteous, professional & very approachable. There was a limited dining menu, but the cooks & wait staff were extremely accommodating trying to make your meal memorable with what they could offer. The tour guides were informative & the train was comfortable. It was an awesome trip all the way around, no complaints, only recommendations to go if you haven't already.

Plan for a very long day
Mary the guide was very knowledgeable and made the trip interesting. Unfortunately we didn’t see any wildlife but that is unpredictable and the staff certainly tried their best. The trip was much longer then anticipated, 6.5 hours which was just a bit too long. There are some basic snacks for purchase on board but packing food and drink is a must! I wished I had packed a full meal vs snacks. We had books as well which was helpful. There is no cell service much of the way which drains battery so make sure you are fully charged before leaving .

Amazing Railroad and Scenery - Poor Customer Service
I've been on the Alaska Railroad several times, but this review is specific to June of 2023. I rode the train from Anchorage to Seward to catch a cruise ship after flying into Anchorage. I've ridden before in both Adventure Class and Gold Class and for the shorter trip down to Seward, Adventure Class is fine for me. Here's the Good - The train ride from Anchorage to Seward is one of the most scenic standard gauge train rides in the world. You will see all sorts of breathtaking scenery including coastal scenery, mountains, waterfalls, rivers, canyons, rainforest, glacier, and even icebergs! This is such a fantastic trip. There is a good chance you'll spot some wildlife as well, we saw bald eagles and moose but you have to be quick to spot them! The train equipment is in great shape - the train seats are very comfortable. In Adventure Class there is a vista dome car where you can ride (more on that below in the BAD) and if you are in Gold Class you can walk to the back of your car and stand in an open air viewing platform. Here's the Bad - Food options. Alaska Railroad used to provide a dining car where Adventure Class passengers could purchase sit down meals. On this trip the dining car was on the train, but you could only purchase basic snacks - most of the items on the limited snack menu were not available. They also wouldn't let you sit down at the tables and eat in the dining car... you could only purchase snacks and carry them back to your seat. Dome Car. The Dome Car in Adventure Class is policed by an Alaska Railroad "Tour Guide" who is high-school age. It's totally inappropriate for an 18 year old to tell a senior citizen they have been in the dome for too long and they need to go back to their seat (for the record I'm not a senior, I saw this happen to a very nice man though). The dome car was almost always 1/2 full, there is no need to police it - just let people come and go the way they do on other railroads. (and if the dome is full... sorry.. first come first serve!) Announcements - Very unprofessional announcements are made throughout the journey. The safety speech at the beginning of the trip threatens passengers with fines and jail time for a long list of no-nos. What a great way to welcome passengers onboard. Many times the tour guide will get on the mic to say something "silly or funny" that just comes across as unprofessional. I would still recommend this journey to anyone and I will absolutely ride again but there are some serious customer service issues that need to be addressed to make this the world-class experience it should be.

    Great Views
Took rail from Fairbanks to Denali in Adventure class, then on to Talkeetna later, the on to Anchorage in Goldstar class for final leg. Overall great experience and views. Downsides were cars were very cold with AC blasting. Also Adventure car was quite noisy with young kids running the aisles and crying. Would be better to hsve family cars versus quiet cars. Dinner in Goldstar was delicious with perfect service.

Enjoyed the train ride and gold star car.
The train interior could be upgraded to match the class advertised and paid for.
Spent a lot of time at the back of the train in the open air area taking photos.
Was uncomfortable being seated across from strangers for dining due to COVID and hearing multiple people hacking away during the trip.
Food was better than expected. Service was a bit slow but they seemed to be short handed and we’re doing their best.
Drink servers were friendly and efficient.
Narration was embarrassing. Main highlights on the route weren’t announced early and therefore passengers were disappointed to not get photos. A passenger with a $5 pamphlet kept people more informed than the formal announcements.
(We were once told to look towards the 12:00 side of the train. What?)
Still enjoyed the ride overall. Great scenery, and we saw a couple moose and a bear. Nice to not have someone driving and missing a lot of the views.

Over all a very nice trip from Anchorage to Denali and back. Everyone was very nice and helpful.
Train cars are older but well maintained.
Nice to have a food car and observation area as well. When arriving back in Anchorage, the passengers were told “For some crazy reason, they can’t get the doors open to the terminal…” how crazy is that! So all will have to wait outside for their bags. Even after seeing the dude come out the door of the terminal.. The train was approximately 30 minutes late in. They just didn’t want the passengers in the terminal to take a few minutes longer.
Very Bad Customer Service!!!
Getting the luggage off the train was very haphazard…like the first time they’ve ever taken luggage off a train.
Anyone going on the train should keep your luggage with you so you want have to deal with the “terminal not available” thing.

We booked the Goldstar class for our return to Anchorage from Denali. We took the Wilderness train to Denali.

If you can choose, choose the WILDERNESS! Not only did I expect the pricier Goldstar to outdo the Wilderness, it paled in comparison!

Goldstar offers a 2 meal allowance included with your price as well as two alcoholic beverages and tea, coffee and sodas. For a price. They do not offer dessert. Here is a comparison:

Wilderness - excellent commentary and service. The bartender comes to you (for non alcoholic drinks too) and brings you beautiful and creative drinks. The hot chocolate was spectacular! Delicious hot chocolate. Service was amazing. Meals were good and served in a timely manner and you could choose dessert. Keep in mind that you do pay for your drinks and meals at the end but it comes out about even or less price wise. When a group gets off they jump to their feet sanitizing every chair that was occupied before the next guests board. They offer phone chargers at your seat.

Alaska Goldstar - don’t clean between persons. Not even note worthy commentary. Hot chocolate from a powdered pack. No service (you visit the bar yourself). Mediocre meals with no dessert option unless you want to pay for a sweet treat from the bar car which is very limited. The only benefit to Goldstar was a little more room for your legs. No phone chargers.

If you are coming to Alaska to spend your hard earned money do the Wilderness train!

The trip is beautiful but SO LONG. If you’re going definitely get the Gold Star ticket. If I could do it again I’d either fly or drive back - It’s not worth spending 8.5 hours on a train plus about 30 minutes waiting for luggage afterwards. I would’ve rather enjoyed Denali or Anchorage longer.

We rode Adventure Class from Fairbanks to Denali and Gold Star class from Denali to Anchorage. The Adventure Class service was OK. In Adventure class, The seats weren’t very comfortable, the train car was older, and the food that was available in the bistro was just OK. Also note that while the scenery from Fairbanks to Denali is nice, it is nothing compared to the scenery from Denali to Anchorage. If you are taking the train ride for scenery, definitely take the Denali to Anchorage segment. However when we left Denali for Anchorage, we upgraded to the Gold Star service. It was definitely worth the upgrade. In addition to a newer car with better seats (with a full glass ceiling) there was a bar within the car as well as a dedicated dining room on the first level with lunch and dinner included. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. We were however delayed 3 hours on the ride from Denali to Anchorage so it was a long day and got us into Anchorage quite late. Luckily we did not have flights that night (like some passengers on the train) as we would have missed our flight. Lesson learned from this trip was that the upgrade to Gold Star makes for a much better experience on the trip and is worth the additional charges.

We did the gold star ride. The views and the outside platform was an amazing experience. The seats and car itself was awesome with plenty of leg room. Drinks are ok if you stick to the non mixed ones. They were a bit too sweet for me but that could be a positive if you like sweet drinks. I am gluten free and had the hamburger with no bun for both lunch and dinner. The service was ok but they didn't seem to know what their gluten free options were or what gluten even was which is odd for a kitchen not to know their menu all that well. That part of the trip isn't worth the extra money but the outside platform is what really sets the adventure experience from the gold star cars. Other than that I feel the dinner/ other extras aren't worth the extra price. Expect to also tip for the dinner and drinks.

We booked the train trip through Holland America. The Denali to Anchorage was great. We saw Denali with no clouds so often on the trip that some people were starting to say "boring" when someone shouted "Denali".We are the 10% that got to see Denali with no clouds. The views from the dome cars were great.
Our carriage guide was a retired teacher and knew her material and presented it well.
Food was available and was quite good. We didn't mind being seated with "strangers" and now we can no longer call them strangers.
We had to stop twice for trains going northbound and I wonder if the routes could be scheduled a little better.

We loved looking out the windows. There was sporadic commentary in the adventure class cabins. We did go up to the bubble where there was continuous commentary but it was very crowded. The bistro has great frozen pizza but it takes a long time to order and it’s always as if it was the person’s first day. This was true on our Seward to Anchorage adventure class leg.

We also went Anchorage to girdwood and girdwood to Seaward on Gold Star class. I highly recommend the additional expenses. The drinks and dining are included. We had breakfast service on both.

The BEST WAY TO SEE beautiful Alaska for the tourist! The staff was helpful and friendly, both, and on the train. The food was good for a train. The drinks were awesome and the narration and watching out those special interest places along work great you are sure to see some wildlife and the poor guys are keeping an eye out the entire time and so are the passengers, so any wildlife they will slow down and point it out.

Gold star for this part of the trip...the views were great and the seats comfortable.
The outside "patio" is a popular spot, and a nice place to get fresh air and take photos. Apparently there had been some kind of mishap with the kitchen in the train, so the food wasn't up to the Gold star standard, but the railroad notified me of the problem a few days in advance and gave of a slight refund for the lesser quality meal service.
