- laurenlizbet0 contributionsA fantastic intro to the Shinjuku food scene! My husband and I booked the Shinjuku Izakaya Food Tour on January 16. We had just arrived in Tokyo that day so wanted a good introduction to the neighbourhood food scene. We were not disappointed! Our guide, Hawaii Joe, was friendly and energetic and not only did we get a food tour, but also a cultural tour of the area too! It was a fabulous introduction to Tokyo and an absolute blast! Joe was able to share all the best spots in Shinjuku. We had no idea what to expect and feasted on so many generous portions of food including squid ink pasta, gyoza chicken wings (weird and wonderful) sashimi, and a drink called Shochu, which I’d never heard of that was delicious. The Sake was literally flowing (you’ll have to take the tour to understand what I mean). We were asked by Joe to rate our “full” scale and by the 2nd stop I was at a serious 10 but pushed through! We were not disappointed with the sheer variety of food - it was a feast for the senses! At the end I was happily at a 12 on the food scale, but stuffed in the best way possible. At the end of the tour, Joe gave us a comprehensive list of his go to spots in Tokyo, PLUS favourites in Kyoto and Osaka. This attention to detail really makes or breaks a tour, and we were grateful to have this information since we were at the beginning of our visit to Japan If you’re looking for an experience that is a not your run of the mill bar hop, don’t miss this tour. Thanks, Hawaii Joe, for a day we won’t forget!Written January 17, 2025

- LoriB18790 contributionsGot my money's worth! I am stuffed! The food tour on 1/15/2025 with Hawaii Joe was amazing. I have done many tours and that was the most food I have ever gotten. I felt like I got my money's worth. I am a travel agent and I send my clients on this tour all the time so I had to do it myself and I will exclusively use this tour moving forward. Great experience and Joe has a wealth of knowledge. The variety of food was amazing and although I have been to Japan many times there were foods I hadn't tried before.Written January 15, 2025
- I4597QJjoshuam0 contributionsAwesome experienceThroughout the entire tour Hawaii Joe was extremely accomodating and the volume of food was incredible. I have never been on a food tour which has offered this much food for such a good price and the quality of Hawaii Joe’s service was outstanding. Additionally, the list of good places to eat in other cities is extremely helpful and a very nice gesture. Very good experience overall!!!Written January 15, 2025

We had the pleasure of doing the Asakusa food tour with a lovely tour guide, Giulia. She was delightful, showing us around the area, teaching us how to eat the foods, and just chatting with us. The food was also delicious! Afterwards, she gave us a list of the places we'd been and a much longer list of her food recommendations in the city, separated by types of food. She gave thoughtful descriptions of each place so we know what to expect. This was the perfect way to start off our trip to Japan and we are so excited to check out some of the other spots!

We had an amazing tour with Shino! We went to 5 different places, including a sushi restaurant, and the food always tasted delicious! Portions were pretty big, so when we left our bellies were happily full! Best part of the tour was our guide, Shino: she's been very informative, sharing facts about the food and Japanese culture that will be very helpful during our holiday. Definitely the experience you should have when in Tokyo!

Love this food tour! We had already been in Japan for about a week when we went on this tour, but the locations we went to had food that we hadn't tried yet and might not have thought to stop at otherwise. Felt very authentic and we got a nice history of all the food we ate. Our guide was lovely and answered any questions we had (about food or just general Japan travel questions!). The size of the group was nice, making it easy to go from restaurant to restaurant and trade travel stories/tips!

We took the food crawl tour with Shino as our guide. The nice side advantage of a food crawl tour, other than understanding and being exposed to the foods in a particular culture, is the gain in local knowledge, about restaurants, the neighborhoods, history, cultural norms, language. One always feels much more knowledgeable and therefore comfortable in understanding and thus experiencing the society.
Shino was accommodating - our family has 3 pescatarians in it, so she adjusted the menu accordingly. She switched us to another sushi shop when the wait was too long at the original spot (imagine that, waiting in line for standup sushi in Tokyo!). She helped us with directions, language, history etc.
Thank you Shino

Max, our tour guide, was great. Very knowledgeable and a sense of humour ...
But we were disappointed with the food aspect of the tour, which was the primary reason for going.
We took the tour to experience several new and different foods.
Instead, we started the tour spending 30 minutes in a sushi restaurant (which was nothing memorable) followed by more than an hour in another restaurant that served two types monjayaki.
It didn't leave much time for much else, and we were too full to enjoy much else.
Spending three quarters of the tour in two restaurants felt a missed opportunity where I would have preferred to walk around the district sampling more smaller foods.

Hi David,
Thank you for your honest feedback. We are glad to hear Max made a good impression with his knowledge and humor—he really enjoys what he does!
We are sorry to hear the food side of the tour didn’t meet your expectations. We understand how frustrating it must have been to spend so much time in just two restaurants when you were hoping for more variety and smaller bites throughout the tour. While our intention was to offer deeper insights into local dishes like monjayaki, it’s clear the balance wasn’t right this time.
We really appreciate you sharing this with us—it helps us learn and improve. We’ll definitely look into how we can make the tour more varied and better-paced in the future.
If you decide to join us again, we’d love the chance to give you a more well-rounded experience!
Safe travels,
Yuma

This was a fantastic experience!! The guide was incredibly knowledgeable, kind, on time, and fun! The entire team was responsive to emails beforehand. There was no question where to meet or who to meet. The guide took us to two places for meals (sushi and Japanese pancakes) and three dessert places. I would have preferred more meals than desserts, but overall would do it again.

I did this tour the morning after I arrived in Japan, and it was a great start to my trip! Shino was an excellent guide: she made sure to get to know us, took into account our food preferences (while encouraging us to try new things), and was super informative about the food we were eating, how to eat it, and life in Japan. The tour had four people, which was just the right amount where we could meet new people but not have the group be too big and impersonal. We started at a stand up sushi place where we had absolutely delicious sushi (and I'm someone who has historically avoided sushi since I'm wary of raw fish!) and then went to a teppanyaki restaurant where I had monjayaki for the first time as well as yakisoba and a red bean crepe, all grilled on the table in front of us. We also had taiyaki, melon pan, and mochi ice cream at three other places for desert! I was SO full afterwards, but it was all so tasty, and I wouldn't have tried all of it on my own or known how to eat it. I HIGHLY recommend this tour!

Fantastic, we were on a 'daddy & daughter' trip & are foodies from New Zealand. Chi was terrific, having lived overseas her English was excellent, she had a great depth of food knowledge and adapted the tour as we progressed to suit us best. Got to places we would never have found.

I had read about how Asakusa is full of food vendors and wanted to make sure we hit some great highlights so I booked a guide.
We arrived very early and explored Senso-Ji temple before our tour. Our guide, Kaz was early as well and we had a great spot in line for our first stop at a sushi restaurant. It was my 7 year old daughter's favorite stop! Kaz let us specify some favorite fish for our order and really customized the food options for us.
The azuki taiyaki was also excellent and I appreciated the extra background on the area's history.
Kaz was really kind to my daughter who was full of energy and silliness during our tour. He even brought us to the right section in Don Quixote to look for the Kit Kats my sister in law requested as a souvenir. According to my daughter, the best foods were sushi, mochi and ice cream.
