About the operator

- foxglovesbear0 contributionsFree roaming monkey experienceBrilliant opportunity to walk through a forested area with a guide with free roaming monkeys within a few feet of you. Guided tour lasts around an hour and is very informative but the monkeys are the stars of the show! We took loads of photos and everyone was thrilled with the number and close proximity of the monkeys There is a rope bridge to cross as part of the tour and ground is uneven, plus there are quite a few mozzies so lather yourself with the insect repellent they provide! We loved it all! The Birds of Eden attraction is literally next door so maybe plan to visit both on a combo ticket as provides a saving.Written February 16, 2025
- 264leannek0 contributionsfun, informative, monkeys are everywherewe had an amazing experience, our guide Andy was very knowledgeable and it was fun to wander around with all the monkeys.Written February 12, 2025
- UD9110 contributionsJust beautiful to see all the monkeys - a must on your travel list on the garden routeThat’s is the most beautiful and entertaining way to spend hours in the nature The guide was great and to see all the monkeys was impressive and so nice You definitely must put this on your list, when travelling the garden route or being next to Plettenberg BayWritten February 7, 2025
- Daisy-ha0 contributionsGreat tour guides! This was well worth a visit. The staff are knowledgeable, the tour guides are thorough and very accommodating. The monkeys seemed happy and cared for and my 3 year old loved the entire experience!Written February 3, 2025

- UKSilentH0 contributionsFind somewhere else, where your visit will be appreciated.Organisations like this depend on the people who come along and pay to visit the attraction: something the receptionists at Monkeyland appear to have either forgotten or never realised. It’s a real shame when the behaviour of staff challenges your wish to give your money to a charity. This was supposed to have been a nice experience but the ignorance and rudeness of the front desk staff soured it. I’d have marked this “excellent” but the reception staff left a bad taste and made it, at best, “average”. Maybe, as a tourist, you’ll find somewhere else, where your visit will be appreciated.Written November 17, 2024
- yogayogi0 contributionsExcellent, recommended, spacious natural setting.Hundreds of monkeys roaming free in a very spacious forested reserve. Knowledgeable explanations from the guide during the 1 hour walk around the reserve. Interesting, informative and fun! Regarding the occasional negative review here: We saw no mosquitoes But yes, it's a forest so come prepared. And yes a monkey may try to very quickly snatch for example your glasses. So either don't wear them or keep one hand on them at ALL times. And yes if there are kids on your tour, inevitably they are noisy and will disturb the monkeys. Blame their over-indulgent parents.Written November 16, 2024
- ParkerPies0 contributionsAn unexpectedly amazing visitWe had not planned to visit Monkeyland but when our whale and dolphin watching safari was cancelled due to poor weather at sea, we found Monkeyland as an alternative and we are so glad we did! We have never been to any animal sanctuary anywhere in the word where you interact so freely with the animals. There are 600 monkeys, lemurs and apes (2 Gibbons) and they are all around you as your guide (ours was Andy, thanks Andy!) takes you through the scantuary and tells you all about the different species. You really get up close and personal with these amazing animals. A truly unique experience and well worth a visit.Written November 4, 2024
- ElizabethK720 contributionsAn amazing experienceMy husband was reluctant to visit as he’s is not a big fan of zoos. However, what a revelation Monkeyland is. The monkeys and lemurs have all been rescued from private homes, zoos and labs and are able to roam free in a 12 hectare site. Our guide Ralph was informative and knowledgeable. Altogether an experience not to be missedWritten October 25, 2024
- GOLDTOUCH0 contributionsHanging around at MonkeylandWe really enjoyed the monkeyland experience which allows you to see more than 500 monkeys all free roaming and living their best life.Written October 6, 2024

- 591kimberleyk0 contributionsExcellent experience!Monkeyland was a great experience and they have great education and protection for the monkeys. We took a 9 and 11 year old on the tour and they loved it. The guide was knowledgeable and patient. So many monkey species from around the world. And lots of ring tailed lemurs a favourite!Written August 4, 2024
- Wanderer313250774550 contributionsFirst rate animal encounter - great family experience!Supporting wildlife sanctuaries can be a bit of a guessing game in South Africa. Some reserves claim to be sanctuaries but allow touching and petting and feeding or purchase animals who should remain in the wild. Monkeyland is a true sanctuary. It is part of SASSA - a local sanctuaries alliance and endorsed by WildChoices (WildChoices is a non-profit company dedicated to improving the state of the captive wildlife tourism industry). Monkeyland provides a home for primates which were rescued from zoos, labs, circuses or were unwanted pets. Monkeyland is a world leading refuge and the lemurs, monkeys and apes here roam freely. There are awesome opportunities to learn about primate behaviour from the guides, take photos or videos or just watch the animals grooming, feeding and swinging. Our kids are 5 and 8 and they loved every minute of this tour. Warning - please listen carefully to the guides, they advise visitors to put away sunshades and if you ignore them your property is likely to get pinched by some of the clever animals. We loved seeing the White Handed Gibbons and the lanky Black Spider Monkey. Please consider the purchase of a square metre of the Forest on behalf of the monkeys. The goal is that they will eventually own their own home!Written May 26, 2024

This is a great place to visit if you have two or three hours to spare, although you could go through in a short period of time. There are some amazing birds which are all easily visible and an incredible variety with some of the most beautiful colours imaginable. The environment is extremely natural, and although it is a very, very large enclosure – there is no sense that it is artificial or contrived. All birds have been rescued and the ethos has to be commended. A very well worthwhile excursion.

What a wonderful place, which totally exceeded our expectations.
Booked this to kill some time on a quiet day but as soon as we walked through the door from the entrance to the sanctuary we were mesmerized. Amazing birds that are in touching distance, the sound is amazing and what I thought was a quick walk round turned in to about 2hrs of wandering, searching, staring in amazement.
We took binoculars which was a bonus so if you have some, take them.
A really lovely couple of hours that was more than we anticipated.

Beautifully presented and beautiful bird viewing however reception advises that there are no guided tours. You have to buy a book guide and search for each bird that you see. No information boards and no guides explaining anything at any point. Very disappointing for the price paid. Lots of staff not giving info unless asked for assistance

The forest is absolutely beautiful and so are the birds. You need to walk slowly and take your time look everywhere because some birds hide. There are birds that come right up to you and sing and make noises.

Visited here with the Mrs’ and was pleasantly surprised as I wasn’t a fan of Monkeyland next door.
Saw some really interesting birds and managed a few decent photos.
Highlight was right up the top seeing the flamingos being fed, lowlight was having some kind of duck peck at my feet and undo my shoelaces.
All in all, 8 on 10 👍🏻

We really enjoyed the sanctuary. We wandered through at our leisure and had many pleasant viewings of birds. The one bird we did not expect to see and which we see too many of at home was a small flock of Canad Geese. I did a double take on that one. There were no guides, but then I generally find them uninformative unless they are specialists in their area. We did just fine with our guide book and had fun working through it.

Beautiful and very large bird enclosure. You can walk through the large enclosure via a boardwalk and see the most beautiful birds. Highly recommended!

Is Birds of Eden a true 'non profit'?
It is called a "Sanctuary". Wondering if donations and Ticket fees are responsible for supporting costs to maintain it? Is there government funding as well?
