- martinologue00Excellent place to learn Mandarin Chinese in TaipeiI would recommend this place to anyone wishing to learn Chinese in Taipei. My language skills greatly improved during my 1 month experience at TMI and I am looking forward to go back. The teachers are highly qualified and the small groups make for a great learning experience. The cultural activities are also great to discover Taipei and to practice the language in everyday life situations.
- D0CHolliday00Learn Chinese in TaiwanGood school, good location. Stayed in an apartment provided by the school which was also very good and just a few minutes walk from the school. Lots of restaurants, a supermarket and a lively night market just around the corner. Lots than 50m to the entrance of a metro station and bus stop. So this is a perfect place to lean Mandarin. They teach both simplified and traditional characters whichever you prefer.
- mattisanonymous00Great experienceVery friendly and capable teaching staff. Class size was pretty small (3 student total in my class) which meant more individual attention. I spent 2 weeks at TMI and feel like I made great progress in my Mandarin. Totally recommend.
- Christopher C00Great place to learn Chinese!Great school and place to learn chinese! I attended the school for 4 weeks in a combo course (Group + Private Classes) and improved my Chinese quite a bit and was very happy with the results! There's a ton of flexibility and the school is very accommodating. This was the only school I found in Taipei that allowed me to start and finish on any week throughout the summer. The location is fairly convenient, very close to an MRT stop on the green line (Taipower Building). They can do both traditional and simplified characters in their classes as well! The staff was always very friendly and helpful whenever I asked for a change to a schedule or moving to a different class. The teachers were all enthusiastic and knowledgeable! Group classes follow textbooks in an organized and effective manner, learning sets of vocab/grammar then applying it to reading/dialogue and building up from there. Lessons were varied as well, playing games, practicing dialogue and listening, working with classmates, etc. My class group of 6 was very diverse with people of all ages and from across the world. Private classes were very flexible in what I wanted to learn and well done. Finally, the school hosts several cultural activities (not free) every week which was an awesome way to meet classmates and explore Taiwan! The activities were very varied from meals to hiking to museums to snorkeling and I definitely appreciated the extra opportunities to make friends and see something new and practice Chinese. If I had to complain i'd say the building logistics aren't great (they have 2 floors in the same building, one on the 2nd floor and one on the 12th, often have to wait for the elevator) and the cultural activities could be a little more detailed in advance so people would know what to prepare/what to expect for each activity before going but the experiences were still great. Overall, had a fantastic time and would love to go back if I could make it work!
- Storer D00Serious, fun and friendlyI took my very first Mandarin lessons this summer at the TMI. My wife and I were in Taipei for only two weeks and the TMI was able at short notice to arrange one-on-one lessons for us, two hours a day each. There were also classes being held for groups. Because of scheduling constraints, I had two separate teachers depending on the day of the week. Each had a different style, one a bit slower and more explicit (reassuring for a beginner) and the other a bit more dynamic but also at an appropriate level. It was helpful to have this variety. Both were great and I felt I got off to a very positive start. In addition to the courses themselves, the TMI itself is a very warm and welcoming place, clearly committed to providing a good customer experience and fo facilitating bonding among students. They also offer some extracurricular activities in the evenings, and we attended a free session introducing calligraphy--lots of fun! Practically speaking, they're centrally located, which is handy. And one aspect I really appreciated is that they are open to students to come in and out during the day, even when they don't have classes, in order to sit and study at a table or in a classroom that might be free, or to meet with others. One feels immediately comfortable and at home. I should note that my wife is not a beginner and has taken several courses in Taipei in the past, including at university. She was delighted with TMI and said it was as good or better than any of her past courses. Next time we visit Taiwan, we plan to return to TM
- dsanch91000Best mandarin classes anywhereMy husband, nephew, and I all enrolled in intensive mandarin classes at TMI, and have nothing but great things to say about this language institute. First and foremost, the administration was very quick to respond with detailed information enabling us to make a decision whether to choose this school or another. They were also very accommodating when we had to delay our start date. The program itself is structured such that one can take group, private, or a combo of both types of lessons, enabling a student to zero in on which method would best suit him or her. The teachers were all well trained in helping foreigners master the complexities of mandarin, and adaptable to the different levels that they have to teach. And refreshingly, the textbooks they use are well written and modern, with vocabulary that is very current and useful on a day to day basis. Anyone who has studied mandarin elsewhere will understand how surprising that is! Last but not least, TMI is located in a very lively part of Taipei with great food all around, and the family apartment provided by TMI was ideal. We would not hesitate to recommend this school for the study of mandarin.
- CarrieSchore00Great way to learn mandarinThis is a great program for learning mandarin for beginners and experienced speakers. Over a year, I spent 3 months in their language classes and took 1:1 and class lessons. Both are great. The administration is very responsive to questions and is flexible in how to schedule the classes. The administration provides a good selection of materials, which are often the supplemented by the teachers. The teachers are energetic, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about how to teach a foreign language. The teachers give a lot of insight into current Taiwan events and culture. Conversation is emphasized, which is a great way to get to know your fellow students. Students come from all over the world, have various reasons for wanting to study mandarin, have a range of mandarin ability and represent all adult age groups. Another big plus are the social and cultural activities that are arranged several nights a week. Excursions go all over Taipei, led by a knowledgeable and very friendly guide. The school has a convenient location in an interesting neighborhood, the Shida district, and is close to MRT stations.
- cynthiap6200Great place to studyIn addition to an excellent teaching staff, the administrative staff is super accommodating. They'll help you with out much fuss, and keep everything moving smoothly. This school is especially good for medium to long term courses of study, since they will allow you to suspend your classes in order to travel. The ShiDa curriculum is one of the best in the world (in my opinion, the very best) and the teachers really know it well can teach it comprehensively. I admire the teachers' ability to put up with so many students and our terrible language skills. They remain cheerful and helpful.
- anthonybH1956IH00Convenience and Quality neatly fusedA great overall experience (coming from someone who done multiple 'study abroad' courses in China.) Teachers young and energetic without being inexperienced. Housing clean and near centre. Managers helpful and attentive to detail. Would recommend to both students and professionals. TMI is a lovely, small personable business that plugs you in straight away, while masking you feel at home. James Bugden is your man!
- catharine G00excellent learning experienceliving accommadations are close. My suite was lovely. CLOSE to MRT. Restaurants- everything is close. classes small. My teachers good. Books well organzised to use in the future. DVD's useful to study on ones own. STAFF AMAZING supportive.
- BGtaiwan00Learn MandarinGreat school to learn the Mandarin language. Teachers are very helpful and considerate. The school management knows what your needs are, as they understand how foreigners tick. The overall packages provided by the school goes far beyond of just teaching a language. This school is a must for young and old wanting to learn language and culture of the Chinese people.
- Julien G00A really good experienceI spent one month there in May 2016 for the intensive program without any knowing of mandarin. I was scared at the beginning because for me it was a totally new language but my teachers were good and I felt almost easy to learn Mandarin with them. They have a method of teaching interactive and interesting that is different of other language school I have been and for me it was much better and easy to learn. They are flexible because when I decided to extend for one more week at the last moment, they find me another room and took care very well of me. The management team is really reactive and can also help if you need anything like plan a week end in another city, give you some advice about what to do, where to go,… The teachers are not just following the program, if you have any questions about Taiwanese culture and tradition they will explain you and teach you what you need to know. You can also ask about specific subject in private class or if you have the chance to be alone in class with the teacher. One of the great things also provided by the school are the cultural events every Monday, Wednesday and Tuesday organized by a professional guide. With her you will discover a lot of things about Taipei and the history of Taiwan, she is kind and funny and with her you are sure to eat in the best place for the Taiwanese specialty after every tour. And you can ask her where to buy traditional souvenirs for the best price. I actually just finished my second time at Taiwan Mandarin Institute and I already started to plan my next so I obviously recommend this school.
- Grant A00GrantIt was fantastic, I had a really great time. The staff and teachers are friendly, and the school is really well equipped. I'm looking forward to going back again in the future.
- laurence888201600Thank You - Great ClassesI just spent a wonderful week taking some advanced lessons in Chinese. I had studied the Chinese language a while ago and decided to take a week’s vacation to do 1:1 sessions with TMI – it was excellent and really what I needed. The classes were great (with Irene) and far exceeded my expectations, as well as giving me a fresh boost to keep on studying. And it was great to be back in Taipei; the Taiwanese are a wonderfully friendly people, but being a major Asian city, you have to reach out. I had really great week: the language, the food (night markets, Chinese food in Taiwan is the best I believe, and even found a place that does excellent Chicago style pizza), and the people (but not the weather - rainy season, oh well). I have a lot of friends/ colleagues who have studied Chinese over the years and I would highly recommend doing a course there. TMI are flexible with timing and have good teachers. It would be very suitable for a combined vacation - language study and seeing Taiwan.
- Ivo B00Excellent language schoolI studied at the Taiwan Mandarin Institute for four weeks. I'll have to say. It was much better than I expected. I never expected to learn as much in just four weeks as I have now. The school is quite small and has rather small classes, usually never more than six students. The school is also rather easy going and is happy to help you reschedule classes if you want to leave town for a few days or help you with anything else you might want to do in Tapei. Most teachers are pretty young, in their late 20's or 30's; but all have at least a bachelor's degree in chinese language and culture, and teaching. They also all can teach in a more informal way, which I personally enjoyed very much and an older teacher would probably never do, and will all also teach you other things which you might request to learn besides the material of the books. The teachers also go with a pace that fits the students. In the private classes you can also focus on a chapter for as long as you please. The three cultural activities hosted by the school every week are all well organized and led by a very kind professional tour guide who can teach you a lot about Taipei and the culture of Taiwan. I also stayed in the student accomodation. Which was good. All rooms have flat-screen tv's and are properly furnished. The airport pickup service is a blessing after a long flight and I thought it was well worth the price. But it is also quite easy to take a taxi or bus from the airport. Overall, I would highly recommend the Taiwan Mandarin Institute if you wish to learn Chinese in a short time.
