- Karen M0 contributionsA day of PURA VIDA!What an amazing day. I really can’t say enough good things about Bahia Rica. Or tour guide, Juan, was an absolute wealth of information! Such a happy guy, and just made the day. We were lucky enough to have the boat to ourselves, a couple. We say rays, turtles, spider monkeys, pigs on Tortuga Island and just a ton of fish as we snorkelled in two locations. Had fresh scallops served boat side and then an amazing lunch cooked by the talented Carolina. The day was the definition of PURA VIDA!Written March 7, 2024
- yuriyk5840 contributionsThe Best Isla Tortuga trip!Fabulous experience! Being only 4 people - my wife and I plus another couple made it feel like a private boat tour. Our captain, Juan, spoke fluent English and gave us a great tour of the Gulf of Nicoya, making stops and pointing out picturesque beaches, rock formations and spider monkeys! He timed our snorkeling so that most of the other boats were gone, and we had it all to ourselves to enjoy the beautiful marine life in the clear turquoise water. Juan also showed us a few turtles swimming around. The lunch on the island in a private shaded area prepared by Carolina was delicious, healthy and filling, with yummy local dessert and coffee included. We ordered and enjoyed Coco Loco, which was refreshing and tasty. Excellent job of the whole team and the owners, 5 out of 5 stars! Highly recommend Bahia Rica!Written March 4, 2024
- Alexea C0 contributionsMust Try Experience!Such a fun day on the boat! Our tour guide was wonderful, and made sure to show us different islands and kept a look out for dolphins, sea turtles and whales. The lunch was amazing and Tortuga Island was beautiful. Would highly recommend definitely worth it!Written January 30, 2024
- Tour6947090 contributionsA day to remember! Why do we only get to give 5 stars? This was by far the best day of our vacation. We did the snorkel/lunch/kayak bioluminescent combo. The guides were full of energy and information. Juan made sure that we had the best possible experience. We got to see Spider Monkeys and many other hidden gems along the way. He started our snorkeling away from the crowd. We saw so much, including a green sea turtle. After lunch on the beach, which was amazing, we got to go snorkeling again. I don't think he had to offer that part. I am so glad he did! We then returned to a lovely area where the hosts offered drinks and snacks while we waited for sunset. Kayaks were ready for us to see the wonder of the bioluminescence. No words can describe this experience. Start to finish, a magic day. Don't miss it!!Written January 20, 2024

- V3558DYalicep0 contributionsMagical—especially recommend during meteor showers!Luis was our guide for the nighttime bioluminescence tour, which was 7:30-8:30pm. We helped ourselves to some water, lemonade, and snacks before he gave us our safety briefing and gave us our life jackets. I booked this excursion specifically on a night I knew we would have a meteor shower (Geminids, December 13 2023), which made this even more special—it was pitch dark other than a few lights across the way from some small buildings, plus a new moon. Ideal conditions for seeing the bioluminescent algae and the several shooting stars! Both the sky and the waters gave us a show. Luis would point out fish and would also take us to specific spots that weren’t as recently disturbed (and therefore were more likely to have brighter bioluminescence). My husband and I were in a double kayak, and he did most of the paddling while I took photos and videos. Photos and videos don’t really do it justice, and unless you have one of the newer phones with nighttime visibility cameras (I have an iPhone 14 Pro and I got a couple good videos), it’s harder to capture the bioluminescence in photos or videos, so I’d say keep the phones away and just be in the moment. It’s pretty magical. I didn’t get as wet as I thought I would on this excursion, but I still recommend having sandals or flip flops and clothes you don’t mind getting wet. I’m also prone to tons of mosquito bites, so I also recommend bug spray. I am fairly certain this was the best value bioluminescent tour I found and am glad we came to Bahía Rica!Written December 16, 2023
- sfarriss0 contributionsIf you book any excursion in Costa Rica, make it here!We can't say enough about Juan, Mira, and the outfitter (Thomas). Easily one of the best things you can do in Costa Rica. Save yourself the ferry ride and drive through the amazing area of Paquera. Juan knew the best sites & sights in the area. Ceviche, Mahi lunch, great views, great snorkel stops, and just an incredible day overall.Written December 1, 2023
- Anne03190 contributionsLouis was a great guide! We went bioluminescence kayaking with our guide Louis. He was so incredibly passionate and enthusiastic! One of the most enthusiastic people I have ever met. He spoke good English and he was genuinely such a nice guy, he didn’t stop smiling. You can certainly tell he loves his job and he loves living where he does. The bioluminescence was great, a phenomenon certainly worth seeing.Written September 21, 2023
- F7413CMmiked0 contributionsBest. Day. Ever! This was one of our favourite experiences in Costa Rica. Our captain, Juan, gave us a lot of interesting information about the area on our way to snorkelling. He spotted humpback whales in the distance and managed to get us close enough to watch two adults and a young calf play. Snorkelling was great, even for the nine year olds on board. Juan even got in the water with us and showed those who were interested some white tip sharks that were resting in caves. The lunch on the beach was delicious and they took extra precautions to care for my daughter who has a severe nut allergy.Written August 27, 2023
- kittik0 contributionsA very good tour!I wish I could remember the name of the guide that we had. He was incredibly enthusiastic--to the point of being a little funny. But he didn't let the tour get boring and kept the level of excitement up the entire time. I had never seen bioluminescence before and it was a great experience. We were lucky enough to have a beautiful evening for it. The couple that runs this place are very nice and we were given great directions to find the location.Written July 8, 2023
- Inspire6429320 contributionsGreat half-day tour - excellent service and guide! We had a great time on a half-day tour with this company! They were recommended by the property manager at our rental home in Tambor. The owners were in communication quickly when I got in touch and answered all of my questions plus gave helpful info. We have two young children 8 & 5 and they immediately provided life jackets for them before boarding and had snorkel equipment for them on the boat. The guide Juan was basically a local expert; he was friendly and fun. He even took the guys to a special spot to see sharks and guided them down personally! It was unforgettable for my husband and friend and generally a wonderful tour for all of us! Highly recommended for an area activity.Written April 11, 2023

- RafaelFitz0 contributionsSUP RentalWe went here to kill some time while waiting for the ferry. We weren’t sure what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised. The location is beautiful and there is a super chill vibe. The staff were super friendly and the price was great! We rented the stand up paddle boards and they gave us a quick run through of how to use them and advised us on the best direction to head considering the wind, current, and where we might see some animals. We saw mostly rays and brightly colored puffer fish. Pura VidaWritten April 6, 2022

Absolutely mind blowing. Mother nature is incredible. When we heard about bioluminescence 365 days a year in Costa Rica, we had to do it and we certainly don't regret it.
Bahia Rica was great and our guide Jose was knowledgeable and ensured that we were all safe even though when we went out it was rainy and overcast(this is actually better than clear skies because it is darker). Unfortunately it was difficult to photograph so don't even bother, just enjoy one of the most incredible wonders of nature. If you arrive early they have a great outdoor lounge area and some snacks and drinks.
Since this is fairly unknown to travelers there aren't a lot of places to stay that are close and the dirt road in is quite rocky and steep. If you want a great place to stay so that you don't have to drive in the dark, Manito's(Donde Familia Manito) gives you a great authentic Costa Rican stay and it is about 200m from the place and requires no driving. It's even closer than Bahia Rica's Lodge. Just don't go in expecting a 4 of 5 star resort. When you open the door to your room, the lizards will scatter but that's part of the fun and living like the locals isn't it?

Warm greeting on arrival. Explanation of bioluminescence and what we would experience. Luiz, our kayak guide, and staff helped us board our kayaks. We didn’t have to paddle far at all to encounter the water “fireworks”. It was totally amazing seeing waves of sparkles at every dip of the paddle or swish of a hand in the water. A wonderful experience.

Our tour guide Jose was excellent!! Very friendly and really took us to places that the bioluminescence became more vibrant. I would recommend that if you do book it’s best if it’s not a full moon and it helps if it’s cloudy and it’s more vibrant after it rains. I also want to give a special thanks to the kind lady that drove us back to the fairy in time! She went above and beyond and we appreciate it so much! Thank you for this amazing experience!

My first experience with bioluminescence and it did not disappoint! The guide was skilled in locating where it’s the most prevalent. The tour began with a safety discussion and info about bioluminescence. If you have even basic level kayak skills you’ll be fine as the bay is very calm. The optimal time to go is around a new moon. The night we went was so clear and we were also able to see so many stars and constellations. We even got to get out of the kayaks at one point and splash around. Very magical!!

A truly magical experience. The hosts are super accomodating. We wanted to stay for the night but they only had a larger cottage available but they didn't hesitate to recommend their neighbor's place La Casa de Manito where we booked for the night.
I purchased the sunset SUP tour and Kayaking package. I was the only one doing the SUP so there wasn't a tour organized but they showed me the basics of paddle boarding and I set sail! I had a lovely paddle around the bay.
We returned after dark for our kayak tour. We were accompanied by about 3 other kayakers who were awesome companions so full of zest and appreciation for nature. Our guide was great and told us what we should be on the lookout for in the way of wildlife and not to be alarmed if we collided with a fishing bat!
It's best to do these tours on a dark evening, which this night was. The luminescence was truly magical. It was like playing with fairy dust! We were able to get out in a low water area and play in it for a while. The saddest thing is that it is so hard to capture on film. You'll just have to see it for yourself!

Hi,
Thank you so much for your description of your experience! It is such a great and special thing to witness but not so easy to capture on film. We want everyone here to appreciate the beauty of not only the bioluminescence but also just being out in the kayaks at night which is something special in itself as well.

It was fun. Professional set up. And the location quite romantic. And if you have not seen bio-luminescence it is an eye opener that we strongly recommend Not quite as much variety of experience as I had anticipated so I would rate this very good than outstanding.

This was an awesome experience and would highly recommend to anyone. Our guides were safety conscious and very knowledgeable about the science behind the bioluminescence. Jose was our guide and he was fantastic. A little canoeing or kayaking experience is helpful. A solo participant had no kayaking experience so they were put in a double kayak with our guide.

Juan was an amazing guide - we were thrilled with our private snorkeling tour on Christmas Day. Juan took us to some great quiet spots full of gorgeous fish and ensured we learned a whole lot about the area he grew up in. We saw monkeys, manta rays, sea turtles and so many colourful fish. He is a really knowledgeable guide - professional and kind. He took us to the floating restaurant at the end of our tour which was a great addition!
Gracias Juan por este tour que siempre recordaremos!

We spent a week in Costa Rica and our favorite tour of the entire trip was the Isla Tortuga tour and Bioluminescence tour at Bahia Rica. Thomas and Vigdis are so warm and accommodating. The night time bioluminescence tour is such an incredible phenomenon to experience and the kayaking was a breeze in a very calm area. The Isla Tortuga tour was timed perfectly with a visit to the spider monkeys island, snorkeling, a delicious lunch, and swimming/lounging at the beach. The people you meet on these tours come from all over the world and we will have fond memories of this trip. This is a definite MUST DO activity while in Costa Rica.
