      Carara National Park
Stop: 3 hours - Admission included
Carara National Park is definitely one of the best birding sites in Costa Rica. Located about 1 ½ hours north from Manuel Antonio and Quepos. The geographic position of the area make its forest to be transition zone regarding the weather, where the tropical rain-forest meets the dry forest. This makes Carara National Park to be a perfect spot for both rain-forest and some dry-forest species, gathering different habitats such as primary and secondary rain forest, gallery forest, thickets, grasslands, rivers and others, simply a must visit to any birder coming to Costa Rica. The main target species at this park would be Scarlet Macaws, Toucans, Antbirds, Tinamous, Trogons, Manakins, Motmots, Jacamars and many other unique or endemic Costa Rican species. Our birding adventure to Carara National Park starts with an early pickup at your hotel. To this tour you can add the visit to the Tarcoles River (2 hours birding along the river) upon your personal request.

      Guided tour with Maurice
We are so glad we decided on a guided tour. Maurice was so knowledgeable that he had every page of his bird guide book memorized. We would have missed most of the wildlife if it wasn’t for Maurice pointing it out to us. He was super fun and speaks 4 different languages and we learned a great deal about the Rain Forest.

We went to Carara National Park with the idea of doing a self guided tour. For us that would have been a mistake. We met Maurice as we entered the parking lot of the park. Very warm, very friendly and no hard sell on the asking if we wanted a guide. We took a chance and said yes to Maurice and we are glad we did. His knowledge of the woods and wildlife were instrumental in us seeing animals I am 100% certain we would not have seen without his guidance. We saw white faced macaques, howler monkeys, macaws, lizards and even army ants.

Disappointed by Manuel Antonio and its crowds? Try Carara NP. There is no guaranty that you will see animals but if you go early in the morning you have a good chance to do so.
I took the public bus from Jaco, arrived as the first visitor at opening time (8am) and did all trails. I saw many birds but couldn't identify all; a great tinamou crossed my path, a great curassow was flying along the trail, and last not least, it was my first spotting of scarlet macaws in Costa Rica. There are many sunny spots where colorful butterflies and giant glasswing dragonflies can be seen; on the "Laguna Méandrica" trail I encountered a group of boisterous Capuchin monkeys

It is worth every penny to hire a guide. We would not have seen much without our excellent guide Mauricio. He would spot something and then have us look through his telescope. After we looked, he would take our phones and photograph through the lens of his telescope. We wound up with amazing photos. Mauricio speaks Spanish, English, German and French. And those are just the languages we heard him speak. To book him as you guide call him directly at 506 8889 6061. You will not be disappointed.

Great tour with Maurice (MVP tours). It made the world of difference to do Carara Park with him as a guide as he pointed out many birds, rare frogs, white bat and the monkeys. He is fun, knowledgeable and great with engaging kids too. Thanks for the great tour!

Mauricio is an excellent bird guide. He found so many unusual birds that we would have missed. He speaks very good English. He knows so much about the carara forest, having worked there for over 25 years. He organised transport for us too as we're travelling without a car. We had an excellent morning. We contacted him directly on 8889 6061 and had a quick reply.

Maurice was an excellent guide that knew literally everything about the park. He was very enthusiastic and helpful to our group of 5. The Carara National Park was way less traffic than Manuel Antonio and had plenty to see in our 3 hr tour. We saw plenty of birds, including Maccaws & monkeys. Having Maurice as our guide really made the trip worthwhile as we surely would have walked right by many points of interest. He is highly recommended!!

Go with Mo! If you want a friendly guide that will find you what YOU want to see, look no further! We went with Maurice to Carara National Park, on a Tarcoles River boat tour, and an inland river night tour. He is available for Manuel Antonio also, but we had that booked before we discovered him. Our 5 year old wanted to see snakes, spiders and frogs. We also wanted to see toucans, blue morphos, macaws, etc and he delivered! I highly recommend him!

Toño Carara was a fantastic guide on our 3-hour walk through Carara National Park. Maurice recommended him, and he did not disappoint. He knew where to find the birds, bats, exotic frogs, and monkeys, and his telescope helped us get an up-close view. He was friendly and knowledgeable. My sisters and I really appreciated having him as our guide. We would have missed so many great sightings without him!

I will like to be fair and start by saying that we visit the park after the torrential rains produced by the hurricane Eta. For this reason snakes and many other animals were not too visible, but we enjoy seeing others (like the coatis) too visible due to the lack of food and the weather anomality.
Our guide, Andrey, did his best and we enjoy the day.
