- harukamatsukura0 contributionsExperiencing Japanese Nature in the Shoes of a Ninja! This was an exciting and challenging experience! I recommend this tour for individuals who are adventurous and eager to experience the rawness of Japan. This was a rare and unique experience to have as a foreigner in the Japanese countryside. We started our tour at the Mura no Eki. I highly recommend buying local produce after the tour (omelettes and tomatoes are famous in town)! We took a relaxing bike ride through the village to get to the cave. Before going in the cave, we changed into ninja suits and tried our hands at throwing ninja stars. Our guide told us the story of the caves which was interesting to learn before entering. The day we went, the cave had been very dry so this meant it was easier to grip the rocks. The guide informed us that on wet days the cave can become quite slippery. In the middle of the cave, we took 5 minutes to meditate in darkness and silence. It was a special moment of tranquillity. There are several points inside the cave that require climbing ladders, crawling on the ground, and passing through narrow openings. We saw many bats and insects inside as well. The bats were quite alarming to see at first! However the entire time, the bats were sleeping and peaceful. The guide said that in the summer the bats are more likely to fly around. After the tour, we enjoyed a coffee and some local sweets while chatting with our guide and other members of the community. It was interesting to hear about their stories of the town.Written February 17, 2021
- Cassie O0 contributionsBecome a Ninja in the heart of Kochi!A unique and thrilling experience! Myself and two friends spent an exciting afternoon cycling through the countryside to a cave tucked away in the mountains. Upon arrival, we were dressed in full ninja gear and guided through a winding cave. We learned the history of the area before during and after the tour. Although not for the faint of heart, this tour is completely unique and I would highly recommend! You can stop at the local market afterwards to purchase some local Kochi food. Delicious!Written February 16, 2021
- Curiosity216374867830 contributionsA unique experience that is so much fun.An interesting experience were you can learn not just about Ninja's but also the local history and culture. The cave is very fun and easy to navigate. The guides are friendly and speak English well. Overall a very unique and interesting tour and well worth giving a go.Written February 16, 2021

I would highly recommend spending a day with Taichi Tani learning about Shugendo, local history and talking about life in general. Taichi's origin story is really interesting and it was fascinating to hear about his journey to taking over his family temple and becoming a Shugendo monk. This might be described as "Shugendo light" and there are more hardcore Shugendo experiences in Japan where you actually go through the aesthetic practice as an actual monk would. While Taichi is kitted out in full Shugendo gear, complete with a big conch shell trumpet, participants walk in their own clothes and chatting is encouraged.
The course was really pretty and the view from the top of the mountain was awesome and following Taichi up and down the trail felt quite adventurous. The vegan bento was delicious and even meat-eaters in the group were very happy with it :)
The final (before the walk back to the start) caving section was much more thrilling than I expected and I really enjoyed it. I was very grateful for Taichi’s guidance in the dark, squeezing through some tight spots. I would advise people who get nervous in tight spaces to skip this part of the tour.
