Thistle Excursions' owner/operator was extremely responsive and helpful in providing the details that we needed when we booked this excursion to coincide with our cruise ship's arrival and departure schedule.
Unfortunately we have had to cancel our entire summer 2020 itinerary due to coronavirus, and the unlikelihood of being able to proceed with our plans for international travel.
The owner/operator handled our cancellation and refund request promptly and with kindness. Her commitment to providing customers with excellent experiences from start to finish is impressive.
We will definitely try to include an excursion with Thistle Excursions when our travels take us to their region again. We recommend that you do so too!

We ended up on a private tour of just us girls with June, who soon became our fifth buddy!! June took us to the Black Gorge and on to a whisky tasting and the beautiful home of the Duke of Sutherland. Photo ops abounded, as the heather was in full bloom, and June was happy to accommodate! Along with wonderful information, the conversations were varied and lively...it was an absolutely perfect day! A great way to get a feel for the Scottish countryside!

A dreich Saturday in January was brightened up tremendously by a Thistle Excursion to Clava Cairns, the Culloden Viaduct, Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness and Beauly Priory. Our engaging local guide provided a heady mix of history, culture, tales and legends while taking us up close and personal with a number of Outlander locations.
Although we didn’t catch a glimpse of Nessie the loch side drive gave us a great sense of the size of the loch and and we saw for ourselves how easy it is for her to escape detenction by all but the keenest, most patient eye!
Leaving the quaint little village of Drumnadrochit behind we had the excitement of climbing up and over Culnakirk, a testing 15% gradient climb. Glad not to be cycling over that one! Once over the top we were treated to rugged open moorland and rolling hills almost all the way to our next stop in Beauly thought to have been named by Mary, Queen of Scots, meaning ‘beautiful place’. Despite the weather Beauly was teeming with life and after a spin around to find some parking we tucked into some great food at the Priory Hotel.
Great road trip which showed us that the Highlands have much to offer whatever the weather!

DO NOT USE. TERRIBLE This is one of the worse tours I have ever taken (FYI I have traveled to 43 countries). We wasted 40 minutes waiting for another bus to tandem to Beauly.. The only reason to tandem with the other bus was so the van drivers could drink coffee together. Along the way, the driver offered little if any explanation of what we were seeing. She did point out the street filled with car dealerships. Because we started late, we had little time at the Culloden Battlefield. Even it we wanted to take a tour - which there was a cost - we had no time.
I am asking for a partial refund because the only thing important to the van drive was meeting up at the next stop to talk with other tour guides.

Ms Karpinski,
I’m shocked to read your review as others on the same tour as you were very happy. For £59 you went into Urquhart castle, saw Loch Ness, went into Culloden Battlefield even though what you booked was a drive by it, you also went to Clava Cairns and Beauly Priory.
The tour guides work and are speaking and driving 6-7 hours straight through and as their boss I think they deserve a coffee break, in fact I insist upon it.
The reason you waited was that a few passengers were late, nothing to do with my guides wanting to take coffee together. When we go in convoy it’s because we are booked into locations together. Urquhart castle is especially difficult in the summer season.
With regard to taking a taxi - a taxi would have cost you around £300 for the 6 hour journey that you took. You’d then have to pay your entrance to Urquhart castle on top of that. So if you take off the £6 that PayPal retain, the £12.50 to enter the castle it leaves you with £40.50. So for that price you got to journey in a luxury 8 seater minibus with 6 other people instead of being crammed into a big coach.
If you’ve been to 43 countries I wonder what price you paid for your tours. It seems to me you wanted to pay very little but receive ambassador treatment. We do our best but we don’t claim to be perfect.
You were also provided with a booklet in your own language about the venues you visited, free water and rainmacs if needed.
I wonder what you think you should have the partial refund for when an actual taxi that you accuse us of being would have cost you more than 7 times the price you paid with us.
I guess I’m learning that no matter what we provide for you, there’ll always be a few people who won’t be happy. That’s a shame that they come on here to vent their negativity.
When you consider that this cruise season alone we’ve provided lovely tours of the Scottish Highlands for over 2,000 people I guess we are doing OK. Sorry we weren’t able to please you. I hope you gave 5 stars to the other 43 countries you visited instead of this disappointing 1 star which is so undeserved.

While in port in Invergordon I had the opportunity to spend the day in the Scottish Highlands with Thistle Tours. It was so nice to be part of a small tour of eight. We were picked up and dropped off from the port which made it convenient and easily accessible.
Our first adventure . . . Dunrobin Castle and Gardens. All I can say is WOW! The castle is breathtaking, enchanting and romantic. All the viewable rooms are completely furished and you are magically taken back in time. Although there were many visitors that day you never felt rushed or pushed along. We had plenty to explore on our own and even take time to grab a coffee or tea in the castle cafe. Then as a group we walked down below the castle to the gardens and a large open area where we enjoyed a falconry display, It was interesting and informative talk about how the castle acquired the birds, where they originated from and we were shown how they are trained. Then we were free to explore the gardens on our own. Along with the cafe there is a gift shop and restrooms. Total time spent at the castle was 2 1/2 hours. It was perfect.
Next stop about 20 mins away was the quaint town of Dornoch. The town is beautiful and when I visited it was full of eye-catching flowers and lots of trees. I even had the opportunity to see a wedding party coming out of the church. The men dressed in traditional Scottish kilts and the bride was beautiful. The kind of place you want to linger. For those who wanted, there was whiskey sampling available. There are several shops and cafes, a cathedral, museum and Carnegie Whiskey Cellars. I had lunch in an upstairs cafe that was just so lovely, from the wood floors to the light fixtures it was aesthetically pleasing. The food was great and a large portion. (I brought half of it back to the ship). We spent a couple of hours in Dornoch which was ample time to see everything and have a nice lunch.
Our trip to and from the port was very scenic and interesting. Here's a fun fact: we traveled past the church where Madonna and Guy Ritchie were married.
Our guide Elizabeth was kind, knowledgeable and had great sense of humor. She told us stories that made us all laugh. It was nice to hear things from her perspective with her engaging Scottish accent. This is a great tour for the entire family. It was wonderful to be in a small group and break away from the herd of cruise ship tours. It is offered at a great price and they are very mindful about getting you back to the cruise ship on time.

We had the unfortunate experience of having Maxine (the owner) as our driver / guide & in her own words "she seldom did tours" --- & boy can't you tell!
We were late starting off due to Thistle yet again putting a couple on the wrong tour and we having to wait for them to return to Invergordon to join ours. Maxine then crammed 8 people into a mini bus, ignoring all Scottish governmennt guidelines on Covid, with 2 passengers sitting next to her on the front seat. She then promptly wittered on about her work as a local parish councillor for some considerable time.
With the cruise ship arriving later than planned & the then late departure due to Thistle miss-organisation she did not reschedule the order of the tour resulting in us arriving late at Dunrobin Castle and missing more than half of the falconry display. We were given no information or history about the castle at all - save just handed the entrance tickets to conduct a 'self guided' tour. If she had not used a 'blue badge' we would probably have missed the display altogether.
Thistle Excursions also go to great lengths to state that water is provided on their tours --- it wasn't on this tour until she finally went & bought one small bottle for each passenger.
She had to refer to notes a number of times (whilst driving), regarding the local nature and on the way to millionaires view actually drove off the road on one ocassion.
Upon return she attempted to take us to a new shopping venture that was recently opened by a fellow councillor of hers, but all declined. Needless to say we were happy to get back to Invergordon and although Dunrobin Castle was a great place to visit the lack of an accomplished tour guide was greatly missed.
Needless to say I will not be wasting my money next time with Thistle Excursions & will be looking for a far more professional company that takes care of both my health & leisure needs much better.

How disappointing to read your relentless attack on Maxine. Here is our reply:
a) you were advised upon booking it would be up to 8 passengers in a minibus.
b) as you were all double vaccinated and COVID tested daily as was Maxine it was considered within the guidelines to take you in one vehicle
cc) your ship arrived 1 hour later than it was supposed to which is why the tour left later
dd) indeed two passengers went with the wrong guide and upon checking your destination Maxine realised what had occurred and called the tour back - this caused an extra delay of 10 minutes with your ship being late also
e) you arrived 5 minutes after the falconry display began - it lasts 30 minutes so you did not miss half - gross exaggeration
f) you were given information about the castle in advance but unfortunately you were extremely rude and insisted on talking at full volume to the gentleman sitting beside you which only drowned out the tour guide’s voice for everyone but also prevented you from hearing the information being provided
g) Maxine only mentioned her other occupation in the passing as she’d been asked about the demographics of the area by another passenger but perhaps you were talking at that point
h) you were only invited to see the brand new shop which another colleague owned because it’s now a very popular local destination and Maxine was being polite offering you the option
i) indeed the water bottles had not been loaded up. This was due to several incidents that had happened that morning including another guide hitting a pothole on her way to work, having to change tyre at a garage and arriving late. Maxine had to also deal with her passengers. Once asked about water the guide purchased it immediately for you all.
j) regarding the ‘going off the road’ - I understand Maxine merely swerved to avoid a huge pothole which earlier that day had caused a puncture with her colleague.
k) she referred to the notes which were in her sunvisor only to advise you of the long list of animals in the Cromarty Firth which did not in any way distract from driving. She also told you she was doing this only once to give you full information
l) all guides were rusty that day as it was the one day in 2 years that any tour has been offered as there has been no available ships due to Covid. Although the guide advised you of this she did not miss out any of the tour information and she indicated that she would happily answer any further questions
k) due to your constant disrespect throughout the tour - talking over her the guide found the whole experience very disconcerting. You have also perpetuated this rudeness by giving this negative review which we found very sad at Thistle as we do our best to offer a quality service.

Both our guides, Becky and Maxine, were fantastic. They went out of their way for us to see Urquhart Castle and Loch Ness. We also visited Clava Cairns, Cawdor Castle, Culloden Battlefield, Culloden Viaduct, and Inverness. We really enjoyed walking through the beautiful town of Invergorden and talking with the friendly towns people. Finding the tour hosts was very easy. I highly recommend this tour. Both guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. We learning about the history and culture. I would love to go back and visit there again. The weather was sunny.

We were coming in off a cruise ship, so I e-mailed Thistle Excursions to see if they might have something that would accommodate our port times. We had visited Loch Ness in the past and were looking for something a bit different. The owner, Maxine, created a great day for us. In fact, she was our driver/guide. We had a perfect day. The afternoon she planned wasn't too busy and showed us several sites we hadn't seen before. She mixed her suggestions with a visit to the Black Rock Gorge, which was a place we wanted to visit. Her commentary was very interesting as she was able to add informed conversation on local and national events, something that always adds to the quality of the tour. We would highly recommend Thistle Tours, and if you can schedule a private day with Maxine, all the better!

I can highly recommend Tour 1 this was a fabulous day of magnificent castles including a birds of prey display, whisky tasting and a knowledgeable commentary by a delightful guide

The MSC Preziosa docks on May 28, 2019, at 7am in Invergordon. Did I read your calendar properly that you are not offering this tour on that day?

I am so sorry, I am just seeing these messages on TA, please email us direct onto our website Thistle Excursions for an immediate answer. The distance to the booking office is 5 minute walk, or about 250 metres. The distance to the bus from the port gates is about 200 metres also.
