- ykk870 contributionsGood funWe did this on a rainy day in February, it was a bit cool but still very enjoyable. The guide was very easy going and friendly. We found it very peaceful to kayak with noone else around, awesome to see the hobbit filming locations. 100% chance of getting wet so remember to dress appropriately. We had zero experience kayaking and had a bit of difficulty but it was manageable. Would recommend, very unique experience!Written December 16, 2019
- FergusRC0 contributionsGreat trip, definitely a must doWe went on the hobbit tour, going down the river was great. Shane was a great guide and knew a lot about the area and wildlife. We both had a great time and would definitely recommend it to anyone.Written November 25, 2019
- ComradeInTravel0 contributionsBest activity on this tripThis is the best activity I’ve experienced 2 2 weeks in South Island. This river kayaking has the best balance of thrill and tranquility, there are thrilling rapids then calm water along the way to both enjoy the river up close and some great fun at the same time. The river is fantastically beautiful. Shane and Asha are great team in operating this activity seamlessly. Thank you much for the great time!Written November 11, 2019
- Cherie E0 contributionsEnjoyableHeaps of family fun! Shane was very knowledgeable and had lots of knowledge on the native flora and fauna as well as the Hobbit movie (which is why we chose to do this tour, the other interesting information was a bonus).Written October 6, 2019
- MarylytheDoc0 contributionsAwesome experience and journeyBen was extremely helpful and fun to experience this trip with. He led us down the river and took some great photos of us during our experience. The weather was terrific, the water perfect, clear and clean. I highly encourage anyone to take this adventure. Great for all ages.Written June 5, 2019
- Manaochen0 contributionsJust simply awesome! My boyfriend and I have no experience in kayaking in naturally flowing river before but our trip went very smoothly. The weather was nice though it was autumn. The scenery was breathtaking. Our tour guide explained everything we need to know other than how to kayak. We get to know a lot of plants, birds, the history of the river and of course the information about how the movie was filmed precisely. He took lots of photo and you could ask him for all of them later. Definitely Worth it!Written May 13, 2019
- Stiff88290 contributionsRiver RaftingI enjoyed it .... great experience. Don’t have to worry to take your own photos, as they are taken for you. 👍🏻Written March 18, 2019
- vanessalgladman0 contributionsFamily Fun.We had a family trip with teenagers and a 4 1/2 year old. Shane was great to deal with thru the booking and answered all our questions about taking our young son. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and appreciated Shanes local knowledge and obvious love and appreciation for the outdoors. The scenery was fantastic and the weather couldn't have been more perfect. We will be back!Written March 16, 2019
- Edge-of-the-world160 contributionsLike others we had low water levels problems and expensive for what it was.Like others we suffered from low water levels and the attack of the flies, due to the slow nature of the journey probably due to the low levels we suffered quite a bit with fly bites. The low levels also meant we, well I, had to keep getting out to drag the canoe over the rocks, the guide gave out a fair bit of information but due to the problems of getting stuck on the rocks we missed a lot of it and had problems catching up. Also compared to a kayak trip we did on Lake Taupo it was expensive $130 each as apposed to $99. However it was interesting to go pass the Orc rocks and Hobbit barrel run area from the film but have to be honest we came away feeling somewhat underwhelmed by it and felt that the guide wasn't really in the mood.. Also disappointed with the number of photos, he seemed to take quite a few but only four were posted on Facebook and we were really only in one of them, oh and the photos of the filming could do with renewing as they were a bit dog eared.Written March 10, 2019
- Joezuka0 contributionsFabulous tripBen our guide was fantastic. He was keen to encourage participants to have fun, with swimming and rock jumping without being pushy. Our 8 year son absolutely loved it. The trip it’s self despite the low water level in places was fun and very pretty. The water was very clear and warm. If you are into ‘the hobbit’ you’ll learn a little about the filming which is interesting. We would definitely do it again and Ben was a star.Written February 15, 2019
- 152amirm0 contributionsAwesome kayaking down the Pelorus RiverWe had a fantastic morning out on the Pelorus River with Ben, our awesome guide! Despite the low water level of the river (due to a very dry summer), the kayaking was extremely rewarding and the area is just incredibly beautiful, Ben was a great guide, he showed us all the spots featured in the Hobbit movie and also took us to some cliffs we could jump from into the water! It was great fun! Ben is a great guy and a passionate instructor/guide. We hope to see you again at some point - until then good luck with the future! Kind regards, AmirWritten February 12, 2019

- Lin0a0 contributionsMagnificent river, but expensiveSome pros & cons. The great side of this experience was the magnificent scenery we had paddling down the pelorus river. It's an easy one, and you're the only lucky group to enjoy this as Shane's kayaks are the only to go on the river. You can hear the river flow, the birds singing and the noise of the wind in the trees. On the downside, we didn't find this is worth the price, well unless you're a huge fan of "The Hobbit" movies! After hand we thought we had better bring our kids swim in the river next to Pelorus bridge, especially knowing that is the exact place we stopped (amongst other tourists).Written January 16, 2019

Enjoyed every minute of the trip and would recommend it to all ages. Awesome scenery and a great guide made for wonderful time on the river. Of all the eco / adventure trips I have done this rates at the very top. Would recommend purchasing the photos taken by the guide - they weren't expensive and it's a great way of sharing your adventures with friends and family (and avoiding dropping your camera or smart phone in the river). Highly recommended.

Amazing way to see the beautiful Pelorus river. Our guide Callum explained to us about the history of the place, the native plants around and how the shoot was done for the Hobbit movie which made the ride even more interesting. It's a must do adventure for anyone visiting Havelock. Callum takes really good photos and it's very cheap, so would suggest not to take your phone or cameras with you as you may get a few water splashes while going around the rapids😉 Would definitely be doing it again sometime soon.

We had a fantastic time kayaking down the Pelorus River with Pelorus Eco Tours. Shane was a great guide, able to share knowledge on the local history and the native plants easily. We felt very safe in the inflatable kayaks which are stable and comfortable. The Pelorus River itself is stunning, its water so clear that at times it just looks like you are floating in mid air a few feet off the bottom of the river.

Would recommend for all ages and abilities, the current is very generous and not much paddling required if you’re not experienced. Some small rapids that added a bit of adventure to an otherwise relaxing cruise. Our guide Shane was friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. We felt completely at ease and had plenty of opportunities to take photos and take in the scenery. Well worth a go if you’re in the area and want to see the Pelorus Bridge Reserve from this unique POV.

Shane took us on the most amazing guided tour down the beautiful Pelorus river. He told us about some history & where parts of the Hobbit movie were filmed, gave us tips to get down the rapids safely and we went cliff jumping. I couldn’t recommend this trip enough. It was perfectly planned and we felt we spent the perfect amount of time on the river.

Fun morning out on the river, especially if you're a fan of the Hobbit movies. We are not highly experienced paddlers but had no trouble navigating the kayaks. The trip is very safe and rapids are low grade, so the trip is well suited for families. You do need to be prepared to get wet and get out of the boat on some areas in order to get the kayak over the more shallow areas. Wearing water shoes is a good idea for the times when you need to maneuver the kayak over the shallows. You'll also get wet with water splashing over and/or flipping the boat (depending on your choice of crewmate). The operator has a changing room available at the main office, so bring a change of clothes and look forward to a nice lunch in Havelock afterwards. Our guide (Jade) looked after us well and explained the areas where the Hobbit filming took place. She also gave us great suggestions about the local area. Overall, a very enjoyable day & well worth the money.

Had a great time on this kayaking trip. The scenery is stunning and Shane was an awesome guide. If you're a Hobbit fan, you'll love the inside knowledge he has about the scenes filmed on the river. If you're not a Hobbit fan, you'll love the setting and the knowledge Shane has about the wildlife and surrounding area, so in general, it's a great trip for everyone! Would highly recommend this tour

Wonderful trip down the Pelorus River. We were lucky enough to begin our trip further up the river than the normal starting point as a result of overnight rain. We had a beautiful day, Shane was very knowledgeable about the environment flora and fauna and we enjoyed his relaxed manner and good sense of humour. Enough rapids to give us a thrill and plenty of time to sit back and enjoy nature in a beautiful part of the country.
Highly recommend this trip

This trip was booked from 2-6pm. I was picked up from the pelorus campground at 2.15 and dropped back by 4.20. Far shorter than the tile paid for.
The guide did little to tie in the Hobbit experience. I’m addition there was no safety briefing and only one guide who did not wear a safety helmet.
I do not believe this is value for money or that it met the advertised excelsior.
