As a result, the payment options and owner contact methods may differ from property to property. For property-specific FAQs, view the info in the upper right corner of the inbox.

Finding a property

How can I tell if a property I like is available for my vacation dates?
Each property has a calendar which shows available and unavailable dates. If it's available, you can send a message to the owner/manager via the Tripadvisor inbox.
What does the "Payment Protection" badge on the listing mean?
The Payment Protection badge indicates that this property is covered by this protection if you choose to book it via the Tripadvisor inbox. In the unlikely event that you’re prevented or denied access to the property when you check-in, we’ll offer a refund for the stay. Only properties with badges are signed up to accept payments via the Tripadvisor inbox, and you will only be covered by this protection when you pay through Tripadvisor. Learn more about Payment Protection.
Why should I use the Tripadvisor inbox to pay the owner/manager?
When you pay via the Tripadvisor inbox, you will be protected by our Payment Protection. Learn more about Payment Protection.

Contacting owners/managers

How will the owner contact me?
This owner will contact you via this inbox.
I want to know more about this property. How do I contact the owner/manager?
Send an email through the contact form on the listing page, or you can also send messages to the owner/manager via the Tripadvisor inbox. You may want to ask about location, included amenities, pet policy and the like. You can also add information about your group and your plans to help the owner/manager understand your needs.
What if I don't hear back from the owner?
You can send another message via this inbox to ask if the property is still available.

If you still don't hear from the owner, Tripadvisor recommends that you send inquiries to other properties.

Making Reservations

How do I pay?
Tripadvisor offers secure online booking for this rental. After confirming the details of the rental with the owner/manager, you will receive an email from Tripadvisor on his/her behalf with payment instructions. The booking details, including the cost of the rental, will be visible in the email. Simply click the “pay now” button to submit your credit/debit card or PayPal details and book the vacation rental. You can also initiate the booking process by clicking Request to Book on the listing.
How can I tell if a property accepts online payments through Tripadvisor?
Look for an online payment badge in the right side of the inbox or on the property listing page. The Payment Protection badge indicates that protection is available for this property if you choose to book it via the Tripadvisor inbox. Only properties with badges are signed up to accept payments via the Tripadvisor inbox, and are the only ones to offer payment protection.
I've found a property I like. How do I book it?
Tripadvisor offers secure online booking for this rental. After confirming the details of the rental with the owner/manager, you will receive an email and be able to pay from the Tripadvisor inbox. You can also pay via the booking button on the listings page.
Can I call or email the owner/manager before I book the property?
Once you have made your initial payment, the owner/manager's phone number and email address will be shared with you, and your phone number will be shared with him/her. Unfortunately, we cannot share direct contact information until the first payment has been made.
My booking request was declined. When will I get my money back?

First of all, please rest assured that you haven't been charged a penny. When you make a booking request, your payment is simply held by your bank until the owner is ready to accept it. In this case, the owner declined the booking request so we've told the bank to release your payment.

To clarify:

The pre-authorized payment will usually appear in the pending section of your credit card or bank account.

If your booking is declined, we automatically release the payment and you won't be charged.

Depending on the processing time of your bank/credit card account, this could take up to seven business days.

When the pre-authorized payment is released, it may appear as a refund on your statement or the original held payment will disappear entirely. Either way, your money will be returned to you and you won't be charged anything.

Remember: it may take your bank up to a week to stop holding the pre-authorized payment. Please contact your bank directly for more information - you can use your confirmation email about the declined booking as proof.

Making Payments

How and when do I pay for my booking?
For this property, please use a credit/debit card or PayPal account to submit payment. You have the option to initiate this process by clicking Request to Book or by reaching out to the owner/manager directly by clicking Send Message. When you send a message to the owner/manager, you have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss options for a payment schedule. If you decide to book with the owner/manager, you will receive a quote from them and will be expected to pay within a designated amount of time.
What forms of payment does this owner/manager accept?
When you pay via the Tripadvisor inbox, you may use a PayPal account or a MasterCard, Visa, and Discover credit/debit card. Many owners/managers also accept American Express. Look for credit card images on the listing page to confirm which cards a given owner/manager accepts.
Which currency can I use to pay?
You will need to pay in the same currency as stated in the quote you received from the owner/manager.
Can I pay for my booking using more than one payment method?
Yes, you may use more than one credit card for split payments. Your credit card information is not stored on Tripadvisor, so you will need to re-enter your credit card for each payment you make. Please note that if you wish to use multiple payment methods to pay for a booking, the owner/manager must split payment into two installments. You will not be able to submit payment for a single payment request using multiple credit cards.
How can I view or print a receipt for my payment?
You may view and print the receipt page in this inbox, and you can also print the emails you receive.
What are the Tripadvisor service fees?
At Tripadvisor, we invest in trust and safety to give you some peace of mind. Our Payment Protection protects your payments and lets you focus on enjoying your vacation. We charge a small fee for each booking, calculated as a percentage of the total reservation cost, not including any refundable damage deposit or owner-specified taxes.
Will I need to pay taxes on my bookings?
Ask the owner/manager directly. Any necessary taxes are typically included in the quote, and you may see a breakdown of taxes in the quote.
How do I know if my payment was submitted?
You will receive payment confirmation via email after the payment has successfully been processed. The receipt will display the booking details, including check-in and check-out dates, amount paid, and the cancellation policy.
What do I do if I'm asked for more money after paying via the Tripadvisor inbox?
Unfortunately, Tripadvisor cannot protect payments that take place outside of the Tripadvisor inbox. We recommend that you ask the owner/manager for an additional quote and pay it online via the Tripadvisor inbox.

Security Deposits

How do I pay a damage deposit?
For this property, we’ll collect, hold and return your refundable damage deposit. You pay the damage deposit when settling the full balance for your booking. Ten days after you check out from your stay, unless the owner reports any issues, we’ll initiate transfer of the refund back to your account.
What does Tripadvisor do with my damage deposit?
Your damage deposit will be released to you 10 days after checkout, as long as the owner/manager does not report any issues.
What if the owner/manager makes a claim on my damage deposit?
If a claim is made, you will receive an email and see a record of the claim in your traveler rental inbox. You will have the opportunity to accept or contest it. If you are found at fault, some or all of your damage deposit may be given to the owner/manager.

Arriving at the Rental

How does the check-in and key exchange process work?
Confirm with the manager/owner how you will get the key before check-in. Each manager/owner has a system for key exchange. For instance, property managers typically have key pick-up/drop-off at a central office location near your vacation rental. Other managers/owners may use lock boxes or keyless entry codes, or may simply mail you a key prior to your arrival. Some managers/owners like to meet their guests at the rental property to go over check-in/check-out details. In this case, you probably would not receive a key prior to arriving. Your rental agreement should include details about key exchange; if it doesn't, be sure to ask the owner/manager in advance.
Now that I've booked, how should I plan for my trip before I arrive?
You may want to ask the owner/manager for directions to the property, a list of included amenities, recommendations for local restaurants and things to do, and so on.
What if I can't reach the owner/manager before I arrive?
First, try calling the owner/manager using the phone number shown in the upper right corner of the inbox owner details section. You may also contact Tripadvisor Customer Service at the phone number listed on your booking form.
What if I am locked out of the vacation rental and can't check in?
First, try calling the owner/manager using the phone number shown in the upper right corner of the inbox owner details section. You may also contact Tripadvisor Customer Service at the phone number listed on your booking form.
What if I find a problem with the vacation rental when I arrive?
First, try calling the owner/manager using the phone number shown in the upper right corner of the inbox owner details section. You may also contact Tripadvisor Customer Service at the phone number listed on your booking form.

Changing and Cancelling Reservations

How do I change my vacation rental booking?
Ask the owner/manager if he/she can make the change for you. Tripadvisor is not able to change a booking on the owner's behalf.
How do I cancel my vacation rental booking?
You can cancel a booking that is partially or fully booked by going to the receipt page and clicking on the Cancel booking link in the bottom of the right-hand corner of the page.
What if the owner/manager cancels my booking?
If the owner/manager cancels your booking, you will receive a full refund of all payments you have made to date, including the Tripadvisor service fee. Your refund should arrive within 7 days.
What is the cancellation policy for this vacation rental?
Each owner/manager has his/her own method for handling refunds and cancellations. The cancellation policy that the owner/manager has set will be available in the Tripadvisor rental inbox when you view the details of the quote. Keep in mind that, unlike hotels, vacation homes can only be rented by one guest/party at a time, so the owner/manager might need several weeks' or months' notice in order to provide a refund for a canceled stay and try to find new guests. Click View cancellation policy to see the specific details. Guests who cancel their vacations at the last minute are not likely to be able to receive a refund.

Does Tripadvisor protect my rental experience?
When you book using this Tripadvisor inbox, Tripadvisor’s Payment Protection helps protect you from rental payment losses as a result of internet fraud, inability to access your rental, material misrepresentations of the home, or wrongful withholding of damage deposits.

Yes. Payments made via the Tripadvisor inbox are covered by Tripadvisor’s Payment Protection. Learn more about the Payment Protection.
