I have stayed at this hotel about 50 times in the last 5-6 years for over 150 nights. I usually stay here for business, but make 2-3 trips a year for pleasure with my wife (heh). I rarely stay at another hotel in NYC.

OTA does most things either very well or pretty well. It is well maintained, the rooms are clean and the staff is generally pleasant and efficient. Their rates are generally good. The door staff are particularly friendly and most of them know me and my wife by name. It took us quite a few visits to get to that point, but now we feel very welcome and generally well cared for there. The desk is generally helpful, but they can sometimes be a little cold and distant. Unlike many hotels, there are HUGE variations in room sizes, views, layouts, features. Through much trial and error, I have sussed out many of which are which, and know the floor plans pretty well, but the hotel has an unfortunate policy of not guaranteeing a particular room. Given the unique nature of many of the rooms, this has been a problem for me in the past, but not recently. The decor is modern and simple, but not cold or uncomfortable. The beds are nice and soft and most rooms have large LCD TV's. The wireless internet can get a little weak in some places and it's kind of pricey. Bath and other amenities have lately become a little less extensive and lavish, but they are adequate. No more slippers :-(

I highly recommend the higher floor (14-16) rooms with terraces when the weather is nice. Many have tables and chairs and the terrace is large enough for a nice alfresco snack. It will add greatly to your stay and the views from most are very good. There is a very nice terrace on the 16th floor open to all guests. It is nicely set up with plants, adirondack chairs and great views of the UWS. Just beware that at any given time a very pleasant and relaxing moment can be overrun and ruined with partyers, heavily smoking Euros and other fun-seeking n'er do wells. Depending on your mood, this can be fun or drive you away pretty quickly.

The neighborhood is arguably one of the best in the city. That is one of the main reasons I go back again and again. If you are working in the chaos and noise of downtown or midtown, staying on the UWS is like being in the country, but it's only a few minutes away. I frequently walk to midtown through Central Park. The neighborhood restaurants are certainly great, but with the powerhouse triumvirate of Fairway, Citarella and Zabar's within blocks, some prepared food for that alfresco snack on your terrace could potentially rival anything the local eateries can muster. The addition of The West Branch and Fatty Crab has been very welcome. Some other great local eating spots: Cafe above Fairway, Nicematin, 'Cesca, Dovetail, Chirping Chicken, Shake Shack, DON'T MISS FUSCHA on 75th and Amsterdam! They have some fo the most delicious and inventive sushi anywhere! Manhattan Diner across the street is very solid as well.
