Worst hotel I've been to by far. I gave it a 1 because I couldn't give it a 0. It's that bad!! Seemed like it should charge by the hour. I needed a late check in at around 10pm. I call at 8 to confirm that I'm on my way. I get there at10 and find that despite booking a King bed, the room was a double. I told him that wasn't what I requested, but he said it was all he had. I asked for a mgr and he only works from 9-5. I said fine, but I will be back in the morning to speak with him. I get to the room and there were tiny bugs everywhere. My boyfriend thought they were "silverfish". Obviously not wanting to stay in that room, I go down to the front desk again and kindly request a room change. The guy looks at me like I'm nuts, but gives me a different room. I go to the second room - same thing, even more bugs. We go down to the front desk again. I meet 3 drunks kids who reeked of alcohol. Great. Again, the front desk man looks at us with this face like he's never heard anyone complain about bugs before and claims there's a handicap KING room that he can give us as if he's doing us a favor. I'm fuming, but desperate for a good night's sleep so I try the third room. This one was yet worse than the other two. I used my blackberry to find another hotel on the island and found the garden inn. I called and spoke with someone there who was extremely kind and helpful. My boyfriend took a bug with us to show the clerk at the front desk that we were not insane because every time we went back to him he had an annoyed and confused look. He actually asked me once "are you sure you see bugs?" We went back downstairs, told the guy we were not staying in their infested hotel and left. « less

I’m currently staying at the Staten Island Hotel, (checking out on 17 Aug 09) and my stay here thus far has been anything but pleasant. Upon checking in, the receptionist acted as if she was too busy to wait on me, everything seems so rushed. (But she was just one person, and I’m not going to judge the staff on one individual, she probably was busy catching up on paperwork as she was clicking away at the computer as I walked in) but I did expect a degree of attentive customer service. In any event, I went to my room, was about to lie down, so I peeled back the comforter, and noticed hair on the sheets and discoloration on the underside of the comforter. I decided to go out for a drink and forget the whole experience. Upon my return, I complain to the front desk about my bedding and a young man (very professional and seems concerned) decided to switch my room to the one next door. Upon further investigation (now I was being careful and thorough) the bedding was clean but the bathroom was dirty. I decided not to inconvenience the front desk any further, so I purchased my own cleaning supplies and clean the bathroom myself (I have two children, and care very much about their health). I think the location of the hotel was very convenient to the interstate, they offer the shuttle service to the ferry which was good, and it seems they were doing some renovation to enhance the look of the exterior of the hotel, but cleanliness of the rooms I believe should be the first priority. I literally had to wear shower shoes in the shower (which I do anyways, but here I had to) and wear crocks around the room due to the dirty carpets, walls and a sense of just inadequate maid service throughout the room. Painting and making sure stain spots are out of the carpets, bathroom is clean and attentive customer service at all times in my opinion is necessary for a successful hotel business. I would never stay here or recommend this hotel to a friend until the above discrepancies were fixed. The hotel has some good potential, but cleanliness is next to godliness. Hope this review help someone... Thank you I can be contacted at nigel.allen@us.army.mil I believe in honesty, and a fair assessment, and I do have pictures to back up my claim, but choose not want to share them because it would be unfair to the hotel. We had two events to go to over the course of a weekend-- both in Staten Island-- so this seemed the logical choice.
When I booked the room, the price was $139 / night. A week before we arrived the rooms were at $114 / night, so I called to ask for this lower rate. I spoke with Tony, and he quickly and efficiently changed my rate.
Check in was very quick. We arrived after 10 pm, so we were the only ones waiting to check in. We grabbed a bell cart, loaded up and went to our room. Parking was plentiful-- when there weren't any spaces in the front parking lot there was plenty of space in the back.
Our room was decent. King bed, desk and chair, TV, end table... exactly what you would expect . While everything appeared older and dated, it was all very clean.
I called the Housekeeping office and told the Front Desk that we did NOT require Housekeeping services while we were there. I was pretty worried that they would still enter the room, but they didn't.
We chose this hotel specifically because it was pet friendly. We don't go anywhere without our dog. We saw many other dogs entering and exiting the hotel, which was great. The only problem we encountered is that our country dog will only go to the bathroom on grass... which is hard to find in Staten Island!
We were scheduled to leave on Sunday morning, but decided instead to leave late Saturday night. When I went to the desk to check out (sometime around 9:00 pm), the Front Desk agent didn't even bother to ask why I was leaving early, and simply told me I'd still be responsible for that night's charge. No kidding.
The restaurant in the Lobby had a sign saying it was closed by the Health Department. Not sure of the story there, but... yikes!
Would I stay here again? Yes. Enough said :) « less

This was one of the worst hotel stays of my life. We chose this hotel because it was near Wagner College and my whole family needed to stay there for graduation. We booked 3 rooms through Hotels.com, then realized that we only needed 2. When we tried to cancel 3 days in advance, they said that we needed to contact Hotels.com. Hotels.com took a day to get back to us, saying that we needed to cancel through the hotel. When we called the hotel back the next day, they said that we were now past the 24 hour cancelation period and couldnt cancel. Annoying. So my mother wrote an email to the general management, basically telling them that she was unhappy that we were told wrong information the first time she called. WELL, when we got to the hotel the front dest attendant Bridget had an attitude from the first second she heard our last name. She treated my mother terribly, getting into an argument with her and basically saying that my mother was a lier. We decided to just get our keys and go to the rooms. We were placed on the Second floor, and all three of our rooms had a spot light shining directly in the window all night long. It was like daylight in there. The air conditioning had 2 settings: loud/frigid, and extra loud / arctic. The beds were extremely cheap and the linens clearly had been around for years. We went to get a soda from the machine on our floor, and it was empty. same with the first floor. same on the third floor. I asked Bridget the oh-so-friendly front desk lady where to get soda or if they would be refilled. Her response: you'd be better off at the bar down the street. Seriously?! so we went to the bar, and afterward we picked up a bottle of champagne to celebrate my sister's college graduation. I went to get ice, and where there should be an ice machine there was a hose hanging from a hole in the wall. So i called the front desk. I had to call 4 times before Bridget finally picked up. I told her there was no ice machine, and she said "did you try the 3rd floor". um NO BRIDGET you should know where there is an ice machine, i'm not going to wander around your crappy hotel trying to find one. She told me that the only place she knew that had ice was the bar. I could go one forever...basically dont ever stay at this hotel, the service is terrible, the room condition is sub-par (it is under construction, but we knew that ahead of time so i left all of THOSE headaches out of my review), and the area is it in is not great (though it is convenient to Wagner College). Just stay away. « less
