First things first: the hotel staff was great for upgrading us with no extra charges to a room with a soaking tub after I've asked, since it was my birthday. We went to NYC for a nine days stay, including thanksgiving weekend, after spending two days in d.c..
We love NYC and we have no trouble with going around town, but the location of the Royalton was the most practical we´ve ever had. It´s kind of in the middle of everything without being in the chaotic areas.
The hotel is very cool, with a busy lobby bar that was apparently a nice spot for new yorkers happy hour in midtown manhattan. It´s one of the best Phillip Stark´s ambience I´ve seen, although other reviewers have found it too dark.
By the way, about the darkness issue, I think that what went very well in the lobby, did not in the room. Here I felt a little bit left ,literally, in the dark. The lights are not enough for comfortable reading or for performing some tasks like packing, etc. If there was a single alternative source of bright light it would be far more democratic and would spare the hotel of some bad reviews I´ve read around here.
The heating was always boiling hot and the only way to cool down(that was explained to us by the hotel AC guy!) was to turn on the AC and freeze or to open the window a little!!!We faced the wall, so that wasn´t much fun! The room size is small, not as tiny as in The Hudson, also from the Morgans Group, but in a way that heavy shoppers may get in trouble, like we did! The bathroom and the soaking tub were great and those bubble bath saved my days.
Although the room was booked through priceline, it wasn't cheap at all (it seems to me that in nyc in the fall there are no great deals anymore!), what makes me think value was not ok. « less
