When we got in our room we were shocked at how small it was. The tv was that close to the bed i had to squeeze past it. So then we thought lets go for a walk and try and find times square and couldnt believe it when we took a left and we were there in 30 seconds, we was not expecting to get there that quick. AMAZING IS ALL I CAN SAY. Then throughout the week i realised i dont give a damn how small the room is cos we left it at 8.30 am and came back at 11pm cos New York is such a brilliant city and has so much to offer. So basically if you like to explore and dont care where you sleep as long as you have a roof over your head this is the place for you. Also the deli next to the church does nice food as does the cafe across the road. Oh and just say no, smile and keep walking when in Time Square, you'll know what i mean. « less

As I said in my title ideal location. Me & my Fiancee wanted a trip to New York on a budget so decided on the Portland Square Hotel for price & its true when they say you do get what you pay for, there was a reason it was way cheaper than anywhere else! The room was tiny, there was a bed, a sink & a tv in it. We used the shared bathroom which was always free when we needed to use it & it was always clean. Once we got over the shock as to how tiny the room was, you realise that the hotel is ideal if all your after is a bed to sleep in, it is about a minutes walk from Times Square, there is a American Diner opposite called Daves BBQ where the food was fab. They do a happy hour, well worth it for the $3 margaritas! All in all, a no frills hotel but all you really need. « less

As other reviewers have noted, this is an older hotel, with some small dark rooms and no-frills decor. However, its location in mid-town Manhattan cannot be beaten. My room was quiet, and the bed was comfortable. The shower room was tiny, but functional. The room was well cleaned. Staff I met were pleasant. You will need to eat elsewhere - but most people would choose to when staying in NY anyway. In short, if you want a less pricey hotel within walking distance of most tourist hotspots in NY, this is a good choice. « less

I was only to stay one night but my boyfriend and I liked the hotel so much we decided to stay one more night. It was great that the staff was very friendly and verified the room was still available for another night. I even called ahead before arriving to let them know I had a package arriving for me. They assured me they would accept delivery and hold it until I arrived that evening; which they did and I was very happy! The hotel itself is situated right between 7th but closer to 6th Avenue on 47th street right smack dab in the middle of Times Square, so awesome area. The lobby is not much to say and neither is the weird middle eastern music they played throughout the lobby. The lift needs a renovation itself to a bigger one. Amazingly my boyfriend, his duffle and garment bag, my self and all three of my suitcases fit in that tiny elevator. Once you get off it looks like an old apartment building they renovated into a hotel. We got a room on the sixth floor, of course it was a renovated studio I requested the king size bed. Boy was it comfy! Nice big down comforter and lots of pillows! The room was exactly what it said, a studio but what can I say, it's New York everything is pretty compact especially in MidTown. The headboard attached to the king bed was huge with mirrors on the backboard and the bath room gorgeous and intimate. Hardwood floors was great, and tiling in bathroom was awesome but very cold in the morning. They have a curtain as partition between the bedroom and bathroom which is nice but we never used it. Neither did we use the little chaise lounge they had in the room except to put our luggage on. I wish the tub had a spa or something that would have been really nice. The room had a flat screen T.V mounted on the wall but not much to watch since there was no cable T.V. just pay per view and basic channels. There was no real closet only a little area to hang your clothes. Good thing we were only staying a couple nights. Can't say much about the internet connection. I had to take my laptop to the front desk and have the IT guy change my settings so I could surf the net in my room. Wireless connection is available through out the hotel as long as you get the correct log in ID and password to connect to their server. But I found I could only connect once. After that every time I tried I couldn't get on. I really liked the fact that staff was nice and actually looked like they liked their job. I would definitely recommend to a friend, but only if able to get in one of these rooms that were renovated. TOTALLY AWESOME and I so would rent one out if it would be this price again. « less
