I made this reservation via Expedia in Feb 09. I called a number of times to confirm the club-level rooms, and request that they connect. We got the connecting rooms, but found out only on checking in that the executive level had ceased to exist some months before--no notice from either Expedia or the hotel ahead of time. That was a letdown, but they allowed us a $50 per room food/beverage rebate, for all property outlets, including the minibar. That's not a bad offset, but didn't quite make up for the lack of the executive level.
Rooms seemed a bit small, but passable. One of the thermostats was not very responsive, leading to Mom and Dad having a cold room. Mom/Dad's room had a subtle yet funky toilet smell to it. Both rooms were clean throughout, and the service each day was quick and thorough. The bathroom decor was interesting, with the vanity brushed steel. This might be trendy, but it reminded me of the toilets in the Amtrak train we'd just left.
The property has no regular restaurant/coffee house, only a trendy bar (packed on Th and Fri nights), in-room dining, and Shula's steak house. We ate at Shula's on a Sat night, and had no trouble with a short-notice reservation. The food was very good, the room quiet and warm, and the service pretty good.
The hotel dealt well with the massive snow storm, and kept the sidewalks clear and the taxi area humming--good on the bellmen and doormen. « less

Room cleaners never left toilet paper. Always had to order it from the desk. No reading lights above beds. Room was very poorly lit. Dismal and depressing. Ordered theater tickets at the theater desk one day early. Tickets never came. Theater was one block away. Had to stand in line at the theater to pick up tickets. « less

We chose the Westin to use up some hard earned loyalty points. The Westin is part of a large hotel chain and in general, the service at the front desk was good. The staff was polite but one senses coroporate training at work. We didn't have occasion to speak to any other staff except for a friendly room service waiter and a very nice doorman. The main entrance of the hotel is on the corner of 42nd St. and 8th Ave. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of room in front of the hotel for vehicles to stop. Hailing a cab was often problematic because the street was often gridlocked with traffic -- a common problem in New York. The lobby of the hotel is on the second floor and it is not that impressive. It is small, dark and the seating area was not inviting. It looks nicer on the website than it actually is.
On arrival we were immediately upgraded to the southwest corner club room on the 43rd floor, thanks once again to the the loyalty program. The view was absolutely breathtaking. We could see both the Hudson River and the Empire State Building since, having a corner room, we had two views. It was interesting to see the Empire State Building at night, I could see camera flashes coming from the observation deck.
Our room was clean, large by Manhatten standards and nicely decorated in soft tones. The Westin's marketing plan draws on the language of spas. We are told that our stay will be restful and since the room was reasonable and clean, it was. We are told that our shower was "heavenly", and indeed it was heavenly, thanks to double shower heads and very nice toiltries. I will add that, while the stainless steel bathroom sink is very chic, I found it institutional looking, and the shallow bathtub had obviously been refitted at one point. The spa theme was not particularly carried out in the rest of the room and some little touches, that I have seen in simular chain hotels were missing. Since this was a club room, I expected more. There were no bathrobes and the bed had too few pillows. We were promised newspapers on our doorstep but had to run down the hall and pick up our complimentary copy of USA Today which left on a table by the elevator. A couple of drawers showed damage from wear and tear. There was an extra fee for the fitness room. There was two telephones and internet connectivity (we didn't use it) and a nice big desk. My guess is that this room was designed for business travellers. it was an adequate room but not very luxurious.
I have read a great deal about the bed bug epidemic in New York . I also read that the Westin had been hit with this but, happily, I found no evidence of the bothersome creatures and I really looked.
As is our habit, my husand and I ordered room service for breakfast. The food was quite good, with generous portions and it was delivered quickly by a cheerful room service waiter. It was also extremely expenive. Our bill came to about $70.00 for two people. If you do decide to order breakfast I recommend the challah french toast.
What makes the Westin truly recommendable is the location. It is only one block away from Times Square and as such is centrally located and is handy for Broadway and sightseeing. Everything my husband and I wanted to see was only a cheap cab fare away. « less
