Was hoping to stay at another NYC hotel, but it was booked out. My Travel Agent recommended this hotel for it's location and price. Waited 40 minutes to check in. It was like standing in a bank queue. When i made my way to my floor, the first thing i noticed was how dark and depressing the hallways looked. The doors to the room were the most ugliest design i ever seen- a fair indication of what was behind it! The room, although tiny, was ok for one person, but it was drab and dark. The television could only pick-up a few channels. No towels were left in my room and i called Housekeeping but after 2 hours and another three calls- nothing! I then rang a Manager. I ended up having to collect them MYSELF from RECEPTION! The bed was uncomfortable, and the linen provided stank. After reading other reviews, i was lucky with the bathroom though! « less

Hotel has a wonderful location, it's in the heart of Manhattan, but still not expensive, It is in front of Madison Square Garden, and two blocks from Empire State Building.

I went to NYC in July and was hoping to get a nice hotel near Times Square, but when I heard that most were $300-600, I freaked. The best I could get on such short notice was the hotel pennsylvania, which doesn't even deserve a proper capital letter. The service was absolutely horrible; it took atleast four hours to check in, and they were extremely rude. We had to take our own LUGGAGE to a luggage room, which was tremendously covered in mold and rat feces, and rats themselves, and waited about another thirty minutes for someone to open the door. Once we finally got a room (around 8pm, we got there at about 3 pm), we were shocked to see that the horribly busted doors looked like old dark green coffins, and even the rooms were moldy. I woke up to a bitten feeling on my hand, which was under my pillow, and I look under to see tiny black dots of unknown matter. I slept on the covers, on the floor, which I actually believed was cleaner than the bed, where mold was constantly chipping away ceiling paint onto the headrest of the bed. The prime molding was terrible, and the bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. Although the lobby may look "great", the rooms are completely of terrible quality, and the restaurant in the hotel was terrible. Although it was a few blocks down from Times Square and right across the street from Madison Square Garden, I am sure that a stay any longer than the time I was there for would have driven me insane, full of lice or bedbugs and whatnot. There are no channels on the TV, which was probably from the 50's. Get this--the "fancy" occasion room you may see photos of was right next to the luggage room, which was in the moldy underground basement of the nauseating hotel, was apparently remodeled, and the room looked nothing like it did in the picture. Also, you had to pay to use the exercise room, that was full of sweat and nobody in there. The machines barely worked, to top it off.
This is the worst place I have ever been to in my life.
DO NOT fall under their trap of a "pretty lobby", which actually looks too shiny and demeaning. Seriously, they need to spend their money on the rooms, and provide in-room entertainment, instead of the screens behind the counter that just advertise and advertise and advertise. « less

Room very big but dark even with lights on. Massive hole in sheets on first night. Bathroom door swollen and rotton on bottom 6 inches and would not close, toilet leaked all time and had to put towels down. Decor good untill you looked up and top of walls and ceiling very rough. Very clean other wise. Wall's very thin and neighbours VERY noisey till about 3am, did tell security who asked them to be quiet but soon as security went they carried on, doors banging up and down corridors all night. Entrance lobby very impressive. Three of us in room, all big people, and two had to share small double bed, not so good. If you are not bothered about the rooms this hotel is in an excellent possition. « less
