I had the best weekend planned in Niagara Falls until I checked into the Oakes hotel. I arrived early on Saturday, Nov. 7th. I was pleased to receive a room prior to the 3pm check-in. I had requested a Falls View Room and upon entering the room notice a very worn out room that smelt like stale smoke. There was a maintenance person working on the air conditioner and I had to confirm that I was in a nonsmoking room. The carpet was soiled, the wall paper was peeling, the table was chipped, and the wall had holes. The towel holder had been fixed and moved up and the holes in the bathroom left open. I immediately checked the bed and noticed stains on both sides of the queen bed under the pillows. There was great deal of dust in the room and it appeared to not have been used for a while. The pillows were yellow and discoloured.
We were given another room. The 2nd room had white putty filled holes which were either peeping holes or previously held art work.(There was no art in the room). The white putty stuck out like a sore thumb against the coloured walls. This time a more thorough examination of the bed was made. An examination of the bedding revealed another stain on the bed sheet under the left pillow . I immediately suspected bedbug blood meal fecal matter, though noticed no stain on the mattress cover. I was starting to get anxious about a potential infestation. I noticed that the left pillow was particularly stained and went out the room and had the pillow replaced by housekeeping. Upon my return to the room, I looked at the other pillows and noticed they were all yellowed and stained. I have been to many of the Fallsview hotels in the last 10 years and have never encountered a hotel with such poor bedding, housekeeping, and room maintenance. Reception was called and someone came up to swap out another pillow. I pointed out the stains on the bed and indicated I saw similar stains in first room. They asked if I would like to speak to the manager. I was embarassed to complain and couldn't believe the state of the 2nd room. The housekeeping employee was embarrassed at seeing the stains on the sheets and didn't know what to say. The housekeeping employee called the front desk and I heard through the front door that the they didn't want to deal with us. We ultimately decided to leave the hotel. The front desk offered to reduce the price of the room. Even after our experience, the front staff stated that if we decided to leave we would have to come down to the front desk immediately. I concurred one hundred percent.
I have always relied on other people's reviews to enlighten me on my travel plans. The Oakes was the first hotel ever that I didn't research prior to booking. I only reviewed the reviews on this site after my experience. I would definitely recommend that everyone do a thorough examination of bedding in this hotel before commencing a good night's sleep.
I left this hotel and had the best weekend in a competitor's hotel. « less
