Harrah's invited us on this little trip for a nominal rate (included RT airfare, shuttle, & hotel room) and placed us in the Veranda. Very pretty hotel with nice rooms, although no place to eat. There was a little "quick stop" bakery/deli only. We had no issues with the room or staff - clean, quiet, friendly. The shuttles ran to the casino (5 minute ride) 24 hrs/day every 5-10 minutes. We only had to wait once because the shuttle filled up. They also ran other shuttles to their sister casinos every 1/2 hr. The Veranda has a nice outdoor pool and whirlpool. The sister hotel next door, The Terrace, has an indoor pool, spa, and fitness room that we could have used but it was a hassle to go over there. If it were nicer weather, it's a beautiful area for walking, so summer time would be a better time to visit, but I'm sure we were "invited" due to it being off-season.

The hotels, casinos, and airport are out in the middle of NO WHERE! The airport is really just an airstrip surrounded by fields. Amazingly the strip is big enough for a jet to land and takeoff. The process was very organized. We received our room assignments and keys as soon as we got off the plane before we boarded the shuttle to the hotel and our luggage was delivered to our rooms within a couple hours.

We arranged for a tour to Memphis via Memphis Best Tours. It was a great tour (we took the combo all day tour). The morning was spent driving by many of Memphis' sights - Elvis & BB King Welcome Center, Peabody Hotel (watched the ducks), St. Judes's/Danny Thomas Memorial museum, the Pyramid, and lunch on Beale St with time to shop at A. Schwab's. The afternoon was spent driving by the Civil Right's Museum (sight of MLK's assassination) and then almost 3 hrs at Graceland. The only surprise was the extra $14/person fee for picking us up at the Veranda Hotel that wasn't mentioned in the on-line price or on the phone when I booked the tour. Michelle picked us up, handed us over to Sam at the Welcome Center, then Willie picked us up at Graceland and took us back to the Veranda. Michelle and Sam were awesome! Very knowledgable and eager to tell us about their city. Willie didn't have much to say unless we asked questions.

The only other inconvenience was having to have our luggage ready for pick-up at 0615, then having to catch the shuttle back to the airport at 0815 from the casino (NOT the hotel). Two hours to waste (which of course they want you to spend more money at the casino!)

As far as eating, there is the Paula Deen Buffett. If you plan on being there all day, be sure to ask for the $22.95 all day price. You can come and go as you please until 9PM. Breakfast price was $8.99, dinner price was $18.99, so even if you only eat 2 meals, you get your money's worth. The food was good and the store had some cute items. Also within the Harrah's casino, there is a Dunkin' Donuts, UNO's, and a couple other "fast food" areas. The Horseshoe and Sheraton Casinos also have a buffet and food areas, too. We didn't spend too much time over there. The Sheraton is undergoing a renovation and was VERY noisy. ALL the casinos seemed to be very tight - not much winning seen at all.

Overall, it was a good trip. Offered a free trip, I'd go again, but I don't spend enough for that to happen, so probably won't return. I do prefer Vegas, but I can see Tunica expanding with all the land around them. « less

We booked a stay here with free travel from Michigan and a free room for Friday through Monday. While we were disappointed that there was no casino attached to the hotel. Someone had mentioned the shuttle runs every few minutes. That is not true, at least not while we were here. The information provided in the room is the courtesy shuttle runs every 30 minutes at the main entrances of Horseshoe and Harrrah's. The schedule is Su-Thurs, 10am - 11pm, and Fri-Sat, 10am - 3am. The best gambling at a Harrah's property is at the Sheraton, if you like video poker. That is not serviced by the shuttle, which is why I recommend a rental car. Plus, then you can easily see area attractions (The River Walk, for instance), as well as visit Memphis.

As far as our room, it was a suite, and a very nice one. The "living room" had its own entrance, and half-bath, TV, coffee maker, microwave, refigerator, sink. Nice furniture, and lovely view of pond and golf course. The door to the living room between the bedrrom could be closed and locked. The bedroom door could also be closed and locked - similar to those connected bedrooms that you find in most hotels. This is particularly nice, as my mom also had a room down the hall (also a nice premium room like our bedroom, but no attached living room), and we were able to give her a key to our living room - while we still had the privacy of our locked bedroom. We left our computer in the livinig room, so she could have access whenever she wanted to our internet connection. And, with its own half-bath, it was a real convenience. It was also a nice place to have breakfast together (we always pack our own).

We would prefer to stay closer to gambling, if we were to stay here in the future. But we had absolutely no complaints about the room, or the service that we received at the hotel. We slept very well, the bed was comfortable, and pillows were especially nice.

Other than not being close to the casino, the other complaint is lack of dining. We didn't check out the deli - which is only place to eat here, but if you order room service, you are charged a delivery fee, we guess because it has to come from the neighboring casino.

We did eat at the Paula Deen buffet at the casino, and we thought the food was INCREDIBLE, and our waitress was very personable. We had a nice chat, and found her to be a wonderful person, as well as providing great service. We ate on seafood night (Friday), and my mom and husband said the seafood gumbo was absolutely wonderful. So good, my husband went back for seconds. I really enjoyed the corned beef, and black-eyed pea soup. It was also a lot of fun to have so many selections of really good food unique to the area, that is so different from what we are offered in Michigan.

The diamond lounges here do not off hot entrees, as they do at some. But, they had good snacky foods, chocoloate covered pretzels, cookies, fruit, cheeses, and the waitress said she could make the best chocolate martinis, including raspberry or peppermint. We definitely want to try one, when we're not so full, as we were after eating at the buffet! « less
