I stayed at Castello di Maiano in September 2013 with our 3 kids and my parents. I wanted to stay in a genuine medieval Italian castle, and this place certainly delivered. It has all the charm and romance of being 500 years old with gigantic fireplaces, but also has large comfortable bedrooms each with a medium sized en suite bathroom. There are various configurations depending on size of your party - we had 3 floors of one wing with 5 bed/bath rooms, which was plenty. There also 3 more apartments, and yet another separate building with more rooms.
The main building we were in had a kitchen with clean, modern fittings. It wasn't huge, but you have to remember you're in an old castle and there is no flexibility on room sizes within existing stone walls! We self catered for a week, and it was fine. If you want 5 star resort style luxe rooms, then you shouldn't be looking at medieval castles in the first place.
