From the location -- a perfect spot on Smith Mountain Lake across from a nature preserve -- to the like-new quality of the house; the separate, quiet, bed & breakfast quarters; the beautifully kept grounds... the setting is ideal. But best of all are Anne and Bill who run a B&B that is highly professional but casual at the same time. They offer very useful advice about the area, keep an immaculate and comfortable guest space, and were always available for our questions or (admittedly few) requests. They are as happy engaging in some morning conversation as letting you alone to do your own thing while they go about their day.
All that said, breakfast soon became an event not to be missed. Outstanding restaurant-quality dishes -- a welcome surprise each morning -- enjoyed privately on a deck overlooking the water and the trees.
