We booked Cragg Cottage at the last minute and couldn't believe our good fortune. Its location in lower Eskdale is well-nigh perfect. There is a sense of relative isolation about Cragg Cottage, with surprising views, nevertheless, of both low and high fells - Great Gable and the south end of Scafell for instance. More importantly the atmosphere of Cragg Cottage is imbued by the rugged love of nature of its former owner, the writer Hugh Falkus. His continued 'presence' in books, room design and memorabilia give Cragg Cottage a unique sense of character which can sometimes be missing from more standard holiday cottages. It is hugely relaxing and comfortable, without being needlessly luxurious. A slightly 'acquired taste' perhaps; but we acquired it during our week there and will certainly be returning. more
