My husband, daughter and I recently "celebrated" my 80th birthday by first dining in Santa Fe for a couple of nights and then staying at Estrella del Norte Vineyard for another two nights. The owners, the Reinders, are a lovely, warm, receptive couple who made us feel much at home right off. The casita we occupied was spotlessly clean, well appointed and
cozy, the beds divine. There not being a stove in the casita, we grilled steaks in the outdoor
grill (bring your own charcoal) accompanied by a Caesar salad, crusty bread and one of the vineyard's own red. Sorry, I can't remember the type but it was delicious: full-bodied, smooth on the tongue with a wonderfully lasting finish. We strolled around the grounds, enjoying the magnificent old trees, old buildings and my daughter laid down a quilt on the soft grass in front of the casita, read, rested and then slept. The second night for supper we drove up to the Rancho de Chimayo for their incomparable margaritas...
