The Arashiyama House and Hanare were registered as a ''Important Cultural Properties of Kyoto''. The Arashiyama Hanare was built on before 1935, and was completely restored in November 2008-2011. The restoration was a labor of love, requiring the participation of artisans specializing in traditional carpentry techniques, and using natural materials in all areas both inside and out. Great efforts were made to recreate an atmosphere which will allow guests to experience the traditional way of living. An added modern touch for comfort is the luxurious bathing area and bathroom...where you can soak in the oversized tub while gazing at the Zen garden, after a full day of sightseeing.

We had a amazing 5 nights stay in this house. The facilities are excellent and authentic Japanese. Loved the kitchen, tatami room and futons were very comfortable. I wholeheartedly endorse the Hanare House as an option for a Kyoto visit. It was a highlight of our trip to experience a traditional machiya type place, in a local Japanese neighborhood in the Arashiyama area off the tourist path a bit. This a charming and lovely place to stay. It is located in the Arashiyama district of Kyoto, which is beautiful itself. The host Tanaka San was very helpful.
