Cars are generally not allowed in the old town and even when they are it's not a lot of fun since the streets are very narrow and parking costs €24 per day. There is parking available outside the town center. The biggest lot is along the waterfront at Forna?e and costs about €8 per day. The city provides a free shuttle bus to and from the parking lot Forna?e and Tartinijev trg roughly every 15 minutes .

You can reach Slovenia from neighbouring Italy and Croatia by fast passenger catamaran or hydrofoil.Three fast catamarans operate in the summer season (April to the end of October) offering a once- to thrice-weekly service between Venice and Piran/Izola. The journey takes two and a half hours.

This appartment is fantasticly located right on the main square. It is clean and well equipped. The owner was helpful and very prompt in replying to any queries. We had simply the best holiday.

Right outside the apparment is the best ice cream we could find in Slovenia and there is a lot of good ice cream here. The town is a maze of alleys and little squares and a delight to explore. Be aware that there is no parking in the town and you have to leave your car in a large multi storey car park on the edge of town at a cost of 60 Euros a week. A free courtesy bus is supplied to take you in to the town and back again.

One day we had breakfast in Piran, Slovenia, lunch in Umag,Croatia and tea in Tireste, Italy. A round trip of 65 miles. We did it because we could, coming from England this is the sort of thing we don't get the opportunity to do very often.

We had to pick up the keys from a local tourist bureau. The guy who dealt with us seemed very indifferent...

Prian: A ROOM WITH A VIEW AND MORE

On a recent trip to Piran, Slovenia, we rented an apartment (the Marciana) for two weeks overlooking the town's central piazza, Tartini Square, the town's traffic-free main piazza If there is a better located apartment in Piran, I'd like someone to point it out to me. Once you open your window you are dazzled by the colorful buildings: shades of red, soft greens, yellows and pink, eclectic and yet harmonious all at the same time. Venetian-inspired houses share the same space with elegant baroque and colonnaded government buildings allowing you one of those "Wow" moments. In the morning we awoke to look out over the square from our living room window as the city awoke and the cafes set up for breakfast. In the afternoon, children played and al fresco diners enjoyed the lovely square and weather, and with the advent of the evening, music was being performed as couples danced under the stars. You walk out the apartment door right...
