La Casa Padronale del Poggiolo is an 800 year old farm-house & vineyard built against the old perimeter walls of the Medieval Castle of Codiponte in the Lunigiana, the northwestern corner of Tuscany.

The farm-house is a village onto itself. The heart is the Aia... or, Courtyard. Its centerpiece is the twenty-five foot high arched walls of the old castle graced on one side by the chain of stone buildings which make up La Casa Padronale and on the other a stone building used once-upon-a-time for roasting chestnuts plus a working oven.

The original living quarters of Il Poggiolo were on the top most floor, today, called L'Appartamento Azzurro. The name comes from the soft-blue wall color. This apartment is the sleeping quarters for La Casa Padronale and is reached by taking a grass...

Gorgeous gardens and fascinating architecture--La Casa Padronale del Poggiolo is a truly unique Italian experience.

The owners have been careful to preserve the beautiful, original features of this building, nestled in a medieval village surrounded by spectacular scenery. Staying here gave me a true taste of history, in a peaceful, relaxing, dreamlike setting. Personally, I could have spent my entire vacation in the garden eating figs and listening to the church bells.

Lots of lovely walks in the area. The Amercian host is charming and easy to communicate with if you need him

Highly recommended.

This was the perfect place to relax after 2 weeks of sightseeing with crowds of people. We wanted to visit Italy off the tourist path...a place to experience a serene more private Italy that few tourists ever get to see. Still, it was close to the Cinque Terra, Parma, Lucca and Florence which we reached by short drives or train rides. In Codiponte we strolled to Aqua Paradiso, visited the church, hiked to the old monastery and the castle ruins on the hill above the village. But mainly we relaxed in the loggia with books, took naps in the garden, and enjoyed the company of the lovely owner...who is a wealth of information about Italian ways and the surrounding area. When we wanted something to do he gave us ideas and directions on how to get there. The day trip to Cinque Terra is wonderful...be sure to hike the Via Del Amore. Lucca is an amazing walled city, about 1 hour away, where you can rent bikes and ride the top of the ancient wall (about 3 miles around) and have lunch in one of...
