Queen's Gate Gardens

  • Property description
    Rental Home –

    High society
No one does quirky quite like the British. From the inseparability of Gilbert and George to the verve of Vivienne Westwood, there’s a certain kind of idiosyncrasy that the UK does best. And so it is at Queens Gate Gardens. A large two bedroom flat filled with antiques, in a grand Kensington mansion, at first glance it’s as traditional as can be.
Look again, however, and you’ll notice that Queens Gate Gardens ripples with wry humour. The exaggeratedly gilded picture frames, the delicious nudes, the statues guarding the entrance to the grand dining room; here’s an Englishman’s home that’s not so much a castle as a historian’s playground.
    Good manners

We stayed at Queens Gate Gardens 26 recently and unfortunately had some concerns that were never addressed. While the flat feels homey and the photos are accurate there are some serious maintenance issues that have gone unnoticed. We experienced a very cold and rainy week which their heaters could not keep up with. There were ants in multiple rooms and notified management within first 48 hrs of this problem and they stated they would take care of it and never did. Paint is peeling from many walls and the flat is in need of serious TLC. The kitchen refrigerator and freezer were not defrosted upon arrival we brought it to their attention and nothing was done. The only shower has a real problem with regulating the temperature it was either hot or cold and though there were instructions with its use this is very unsafe and potentially a liability. We were there for a family visit and despite the less than favorable conditions with this flat we were not going to let it ruin our stay... more

After only three nights, it seemed so unfair to have to hand back the keys to the Queens Gate Gardens apartment. Oh, sure, some Big City lawyer might argue that I only paid for three nights’ accommodation – but that’s legal hair-splitting. It was my apartment in a pristine residential square in South Kensington and, frankly, I want it back.

The basement apartment is decorated in Last Night of the Proms style with enough Union Jack and regal motifs on the soft furnishings to ensure it would be treasonable to do anything else but toast the Queen at every opportunity – and speaking of toast, dear current owner, I do apologise for inadvertently nicking some of your excellent marmalade from the fridge. It was inexcusable given the supermarket-that-other-supermarkets-hope-to-be (Waitrose) is a five minute saunter away, smack above Gloucester Road tube station.

A man of almost saintly patience (me, that is, not the chap who has permanent keys to the apartment), I stayed...
