Beautiful Dolceacqua is the perfect spot at the foot of the Maritime/Ligurian Alps and only 8 kms from the coast. Ideal for simply relaxing on the sunnny house terrace/village cafe by the river, or as a base for exploring its own castle, nearby hilltop towns and the famous centres of San Remo, Nice, Monte Carlo etc.

Vicolo Basso is set in the old centre with its narrow arches and tunnels over cobbled streets. The house with its stunning arched ceilings and doors has 3 levels :- 1) The well equipped kitchen and dining area. 2) A comfortable sitting room often used as a private second bedroom. 3) Main bedroom and separate bathroom. Highly popular with our guests and situated at the top of the house is the large sunny terrace with flowers and trees and BBQ area, suitable for sunbathin...

The arched ceilings are stuffed with pine cones and other local material which helps to keep the house cool in summer and warm in winter. The arches make the ceiling a little low in a couple of places. The ceiling style can be seen throughout the village.

The cosy but not small living room has a sofa, sofa-bed and armchair, a selection of books, games and DVDs. UK Freesat TV is installed. Set off the stairs with its own door it makes for a private and peaceful 2nd bedroom.

A stair guard is available for small children and is recommended to be used on the stone stairs.

We wanted a trip to a real Italian setting and we were not disappointed. The house is quirky with four sets of stairs that wind on up to each floor. The charm is its original features and the fact you are in the heart of the community as well as the excellent facilities in the house. Dolceaqua was delightful, welcoming and just what we were looking for. It had everything you wanted, close to the coast for trips to the beautiful coastline and the lovely towns, close to the mountains for the scenery, but easily a place where you could just relax and wind down.
The local shops provided excellent fresh produce, and were only too pleased to help. Eating out was not expensive and provided an excellent choice with Bar California providing an excellent bar to drink and chat too. This will not be the last time we visit and thank you for such a fantastic time.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013 for a stay in May 2013

We booked online having stayed on French campsites for three weeks. Being recently retired we decided to extend our stay and searched for accomodation just over the French border. Three destinations were selected and we chose Dolceacqua but with little research really. What a brilliant surprise, nothing can prepare you for the magic of this medieval town!
Our accomodation added to the magic. The owner's desription was spot on but couldn't possibly capture the history/romance that it offered. The rooms were beautifully restored to a very high standard. After four weeks from home the TV with British channels was welcome.
The one difficulty was the stairs - five levels to the gorgeous sun terrace, but the local wine helped our old limbs.
Dolceacqua is a must visit but other local towns are breathtaking, my wife cried on a number of occasions as we turned the corner to view yet another remarkable vista.
We will return.
