If you're looking to experience the feel of life in a French village, this is where you want to be. Our house is located in the Dordogne department of southwestern France, in a lovely medieval village called Issigeac. The town of Bergerac, with its airport and train station, is just 15-20 minutes away.

The village has a full range of shops and artists; it bustles every Sunday with a lively regional market. There are three cafes, three restaurants, three bakeries, two grocery stores, an organic food shop, two butchers and a wine shop.

Our house is renovated but still simple. There is an eat-in kitchen on the ground floor, along with the bathroom. Three bedrooms are on the first floor up (two with double beds, and one with bunk beds), and the whole top floor is a sitting area with a...

I've stayed at the house more than once, and it is as described: a family home, comfortable rather than luxurious, well set-up and easy to enjoy. The thick stone walls provide a welcome coolness in the summer, and the modern heating works perfectly well in the winter. I almost got caught out once by a neighbour knocking.)

Even better than the house itself, in my view, is the village, which is a quintessence of France. It never ceases to amaze me how many services, commercial and state-provided, are represented in Issigeac, from a municipal library to two (!) hairdressers and pharmacies. It is a tiny village in size! Three patisseries, and cafe-bars, a "salon de the" (didn't sample that one), and several restaurants.

On one visit we had no car and it wasn't a problem, as we took the bus to...
