The General Stores is furnished by Fashion and Textiles Designer and Upholsterer Liz Lewitt, in a bohemian, arts and crafts style - with items begged, borrowed, stolen and customised over the years from various sources.

50% of our bookings are for hen parties, from which we get repeat bookings and recommendations.

25% are three generations of families who recognise that we can cater both for the more senior guests (privacy in George Cottage) and the more junior (lots of toys, books, games, DVDs etc) and who struggle to get all three generations together under one roof.

And 25% are big birthdays with family and friends - 40th and 50th's - people who want a bit of a party in style but want to bring their children with them too.

    Additional amenities & feature info
The General Stores successfully merges the old with the new through the use of beautiful and sensitive decoration by fashion and textile designer Liz Lewitt. There are many fascinating original features still in evidence throughout, which help to tell the story of the buildings long and varied history, including the remains of a rifle range in the barn which was used for gunfire practice during the Second World War, and the series of bee skeps inset into the outside walls of the building into which small hives would be placed to protect them from the elements. Other points of interest are an internal Edwardian sliding casement window in the sitting room, doors and butterfly hinges which date back to the 1650's and an old bread oven from one of the General Stores previous incarnations... more

    How to get there
If travelling from Bristol by far the quickest route is via Chepstow and along the A48 towards Gloucester on the Welsh side of the river. This avoids all the small villages in The Forest itself, and also avoids any potential rush hour traffic or road works in Gloucester.

Proceed along the A48, and through Newnham on Severn. Out the other side of Newnham, you will pass Glevum Conservatories on your right, and a Texaco Garage on your left. Continue up the hill after the Texaco Garage. You will see signs, on the right hand side of the road, to Flaxley and Mitcheldean. The turning itself is fairly concealed on the left hand side, on the brow of the hill, before a cottage. Mitcheldean is 4 miles from this point, along beautiful country lanes. Follow signs for Flaxley, past the abbey and chape...

I booked the General Stores for a hen party this June. There were 17 of us in the party and trying to find anywhere in the South West that would suit us for a reasonable price was proving to be a huge challange until I came across this gem in the Forest of Dean. The house itself was like a... more

I can't recommend this place enough. It's a fabulous old building that's been restored in a very tasteful and unique way. Full of original charm but with all mod cons. I booked the place for my partners 40th birthday party. I wanted somewhere that all her friends could come along with their children and dogs. The owners were very flexible,... more

5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2014 for a stay in April 2014

All the family agreed this is one of the best large properties we have stayed in, from the gorgeous hot tub and play areas outside to all the books, games, videos, child related toys of every description and pool table, everything seems to have been thought of and provided. The kitchen and dining facilities are just fantastic too, with every... more
