An in-depth look at the mid-year Industry Index: North America

The TripAdvisor Industry Index™ mid-year report included responses from more than 25,000 hoteliers worldwide, including those in North America. Here’s a breakdown of some of the key findings for that region:

Rates:

Forty-seven percent of hotels in the U.S. expect higher rates ahead of Fall travel season compared to last year. By comparison, 31 percent of hoteliers in Canada and 30 percent in Mexico plan to see an increase in rates.

Profitability:

Thirty percent of properties in the U.S. reported being extremely or very profitable in the past six months, compared to 24 percent in the Caribbean and 21 percent in Canada.

Jobs:

In North America, 21 percent of properties in Mexico plan to hire new staff in the next six months, compared to hiring plans for hoteliers in the Caribbean (20%), U.S. (15%) and Canada (15%).

In North America, hoteliers in the Caribbean are more likely to engage with current or potential guests:

Special Offers:

The most popular special offers for North American hoteliers fell in line with the world trend: room discounts and special amenities (such as free WiFi). Room Discounts: Caribbean: 63% U.S.: 58% Canada: 53% Special Amenities: Canada: 49% Caribbean: 45% U.S.: 44%

Eco-Friendly:

Canada (91%) ranks #1 in North America and #2 in the world for hoteliers that report using eco-friendly practices at their properties. Globally, the U.S. came in 7th (81%) and Caribbean 8th (80%), respectively.
