San Juan de la Cruz Hermitage
The San Juan de la Cruz Hermitage is located at Parque San Juan de la Cruz. The site of this chapel was originally occupied by a chapel founded by the Friars of the Convento de la Peñuela. Doña Juana de Nava y Vozmediano donated her land in Peñuela and Torrecillas to the King Carlos III so that he could found the Nuevas Colonias (New Colonies), on condition that he build a hermitage in honor of San Juan de la Cruz. So the old chapel was enlarged with a new central nave. The first cemetery was constructed beside it. The church also has a crypt and ossuary beneath the hermitage. The legend is that the friars saw San Juan de la Cruz saying a mass in the hermitage the day of his death in Ubeda on Dec.14, 1591. The main altar has a painting by Sanchez Sola that depicts this miracle.
