The Washington State ferries are like express trains that can take travelers to unforseen destinations. Lopez Island and Orcas Island are a couple of these destinations that are particularly attractive.
Lopez Island
Lopez Island is less commercially developed for tourism than Friday Harbor and San Juan Island. Friday Harbor used to be the primary port between the United States and Alaska. Much of the produce actually was grown on Lopez Island and exported elsewhere in the United States.
Although the woodsy landscape is similar to Friday Harbor, the farming techniques made it more pastoral. This flat topography is excellent for bicycling. Take a tour or rent a bike to explore the village. The village is a row of electic shops, bakeries, and galleries.
Also go wine-tasting in the vineyards and learn more about the natural history at the Historical Museum. As is the case on all the islands, waving to a passerby is a common practice. Don't forget to return the favor on the way to the store or among fellow kayakers.
Orcas Island
Orcas Island is not only a perfect watchtower for wildlife. Travelers can truly create a 2-3 day holiday or excursion in Orcas Island from Friday Harbor.
The history museum is worth the trip to island alone. The facility is reconstructed from the remnants of pioneer family cabins. It contains an extensive collection of 6000 objects, letters, photographs and artifacts.
Although the greater bulk of information is on Orcas Island, there is a significant number of exhibits that explain the history of all the San Juan Islands.
Travelers who desire a little rejuvenation and maybe some luxury will appreciate the Orcas Spa and the yacht charters. Treat yourself to tranquil aromatherapy or an invigorating shiatsu after a day of kayaking or bicycling around the island. Then, take a private vessel complete with a crew and meals to British Columbia.
