The main attraction that sticks out in people's minds when they think of shopping in Providence is the Providence Place Mall. Located right off of Interstate-95, the mall finds itself in a great area for visitors and locals alike. It is also situated next to the Dunkin Donuts Center, an arena which hosts both sports events and concerts.
Providence Place Mall is known for its upscale, pricey shops, but this shouldn't discourage the average shopper on a budget. There are a number of stores affordable for everyone, such as Champs Sports and Express. In addition, Dave and Busters, a well known restaurant and bar, is located inside the mall. This restaurant has a little something for everyone. From a huge arcade for kids, to a fully-stocked bar for a night on the town, this restaurant and bar pleases everyone that walks through the doors. For a full list of stores and other information on the mall, click the link above and visit the mall's website.
If going to a large mall is not your thing, don't worry. There are plenty of other places to shop in Providence. The downtown, or Downcity as it is called in Rhode Island, has a diverse selection of stores and boutiques. They range from funky gift shops, upscale clothing boutiques, to stylish home furnishing stores. There's an intersting variety downtown and it is much more unique than any of the chain stores at the mall. In addition to the permanent stores, there is the Providence Open Market on Saturdays during the summer and fall. There you can walk Westminster Street (closed off to cars) and browse the many tables with arts, crafts, jewelry, local produce, and more.
Many shoppers head to Thayer Street, located in East Providence near Brown University. Here you can shop or just hang out without the hustle and flow of a large mall.
Also located on the eastside of Providence is Wickenden Street; along with it's many restaurants there is a lot of interesting shopping - mainly antique and curio shops.
A must shopping stop is at RISD Works , the gallery & retail store featuring the works of RISD Alumni and faculty. It's a wonderful shop for unique gifts.
