The Museum of Funeral Customs is a small, niche museum located near Springfield's historic Oak Ridge Cemetery and near Abraham Lincoln's Tomb. The museum displays the history of funerals in the US and traces the development of the American funeral profession. The exhibits are highly educational and are presented in a tasteful manner. The exhibits are self-guided, and the staff is very knowledgable and willing to answer questions that some might think are too gruesome to ask. The museum charges a nominal admission fee (they're not supported by tax dollars). Artifacts on exhibit include caskets, embalming equipment, hearses, tombstones, mourning clothing, and mourning jewelry. If you're looking to learn more about Abraham Lincoln's funeral, this is the place to visit. The new Lincoln Presidential Museum has an impressive Lincoln funeral scene from the former Illinois capitol building, but the Museum of Funeral Customs discusses the entire funeral from Washington, D.C., to Springfield. Unlike other museums, photos are allowed here. The museum also operates a shop in which visitors can purchase books, postcards, t-shirts, notepads, key tags, videos, and really cool chocolate coffins custom made by a local candy manufacturer. This is a must-see if you plan to visit Springfield. If you can't visit the museum or if you want to preview what you'll see, visit the museum's web site at

. The museum also offers guided tours for groups.
