The Garden was designed by Jens Jensen to honor Abraham Lincoln.  It was established when the city built Lake Springfield.

Although some, may come and say, " Where is the garden?;" all of the trees, woodland plants and prairies were planted here in what was once farm land. The original garden was 62 acres, but with additions it is now 100 acres.  There are more than 6 miles of trails, but they are easy to follow as the land is mostly stretched out between the lake and the road.

It is fifteen minutes from the city so there is a good chance of seeing wildlife.  Deer, fox, coyotes and lots of birds visit the garden frequently.  Its a great place to stretch your legs, visit nature, meditate.  There a benches placed close enough to each other that you can rest when you are weary or just sit and enjoy.

It is beautiful in every season, but especially so when the redbuds, dogwoods and flowering crabs are blooming, or in late summer when the prairie is in its full glory or in October when the leaves on the trees defy the blueness of the sky.

The nature center has displays to teach about  native plants and animals and their habitats.  The gift shop has lovely gifts in all price ranges, as well as a children's souvenir area (anyone need a rubber snake?)  There are restrooms, drinking fountain, soda machine, snacks and candy.  Picnicking is discouraged, but there are Lake parks nearby with picnic tables, shelters and play equipment.
